Father David Darnall, Senior, d. 30 Jun 1702, Richmond, Virginia, United States of America
Mother Margritt Morgan, b. 1648, Virginia, United States of America ??**?? Morgan? - not Mott?
Notes
?Research notes on the Darnall family were originally credited to Sally Darnall Webb Federer who was cited in the Darnall Family History book written in 1979 as having discovered the roots of the Darnall family.

The first Historical reference for David Darnall was 4 May 1686 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He was asked to leave the state which was Catholic at the time, due to his marriage to Margritt. The legal request calls Margritt and her children 'pretended', suggesting they were not recognized by the Catholic Church. Margritt was a Quaker, and both David Darnall and his fellow militant non-conformist Parson John Waugh seemed in constant conflict with the State over religion and the rights of Quakers retaining property they had been granted and purchased. David proceeded with his suit until it brought about his financial ruin, and despite moving to Richmond County, Virginia, was still persecuted until his death.

Margritt's surname is also noted as Mott and Stone in some family histories. Margritt's will was written after David's death in which she noted her sons which she could not have written without having been legally married to David. ********

from the book 'The Collie family of Pittsylvania Co, VA' by Betty Cox Collie

James Collie left the Garmouth area prior to 2/21/1751 when he first appears in the records of Stafford Co, VA

By early 1766 he and his family were living in Pittsylvania Co, VA

The last known record for James Collie in Pittsylvania Co, Va was his listing in a 1782 tax record as the head of household containing 9 white people and no slaves. He was listed as "James Colley, senr" , with the "Senior" either added to distinguish him from his 18-19 yr old son, James Jr or to acknowledge his status as an older person. This point becomes important in establishing his approximate death year, in that the next known tax record of Pittsylvania Co, VA, for the year 1785, records only "James Colley" (not as a "Senior"), with only 5 white household members. Because James Collie (II) by then was over 21 years old (though as yet unmarried), the 1785 record would be viewed as evidence that James Collie, "Senr", the Scottish immigrant, was deceased, and his son was now head of the remaining, but smaller, household. If so, then James Collie, the immigrant, would have died between 1782 and 1785.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
from the book 'The Collie family of Pittsylvania Co, VA' by Betty Cox Collie

Following the 1775 survey, the only known deed for James Collie—one which also mentions
his wife Ann—is dated April 11, 1781. By this time, James was 62 years old and Ann
was in her mid-50s. The deed was one whereby Hankerson Ashby, the son and heir of Thomas
Ashby, deceased, gave James Collie and his wife a life interest to 330 acres of land on the
branches of Sandy Creek of Dan River in the southern part of Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

The deed (DB 6, pp. 141-142) recites that the land was part of a larger tract being sold to John
Waller, with Hankerson Ashby reserving out:
...about the half of the above said track at the low end for James Collie
and Ann Collie his Wife, there [their] lives to use the Land and what belongs
to the above said part of the Land as shall sum [seem] good to Father
[either] of the said James & Ann Collie and at their Deaths to return to
John Waller as his property and the above said John Waller doth here unto
agree the above is signed and delivered before these witnesses [William
Booker, Daniel Everett, Humphrey Hendrick, & John Stamps] ...signed:
Hankerson Ashby & John Waller [with Waller signing by a mark]
It is unclear what brought about this arrangement. It might have been to resolve a legal
issue of conflicting claims by the Ashby family to some of James Collie's land including wJiere
he lived. Or, it may have been a different but nearby tract involving some type of gift arrangement
for reasons now unknown. In any case, the Collies presumably did live on this
tract, and it likely was the location of James Collie's death in the 1780s. How that was estimated
is discussed later.

James Collie(I) was born in the highlands of Scotland and took passage to the American Colonies sometime prior to 1750. He and his spouse, lived in the colony of Virginia. One known son, William Silas Collie (I), was born there in 1753. There were likely other children. James lived at a time of great unrest and discontent over the harsh treatment and taxation of the mother country, England. From Family Findings, Vol. IX, No. 3, July 1977, p. 32
John R. Graves
(Obituary printed in the June 9 1859 Memphis, Arkansas and Ouachita Christian Advocate. Submitted by Mrs. J. V. Butler, 702 N. Central Ave., Humboldt, Tn. 34383)
John R. Graves was born in Abbeville District, South Carolina September 3, 1791; died in Madison County, Tennessee, May 22, 1859. Brother Graves came with his parents to Middle Tennessee in 1804, where he, in September 1811, was united in marriage to Miss Agness Noe; moved to Madison County, Tennessee some twenty or thirty years since. Brother Graves was baptized by Rev. Learner Blackman, July 22, 1811, and joined the Church as a seeker, August 1st of the same year, and was converted to God at a prayer meeting on the same night. He was no meager, dwarfish Christian, but was a warm-hearted earnest Christian. He loved God and loved the Church. He had a noble soul and endeavored to promote the interest of the Church in every way possible. He had served the Church as exhorter, leader, and steward for a number of years with fidelity and usefulness.--
He was an ardent, earnest man: what he did, he did with all his might. It was my privelege to see him repeatedly during the last winter and spring. I always found him in a happy frame of mind. His disease was Dropsy. He had suffered much for the last eighteen months or two years, but was resigned and patiently bore his afflictions. He often spoke of his approaching dissolution, with that confidence in the truth and power of our holy religion, that only characterizes the true Christian. He was ready. He was a noble man, and the Church has lost a useful member. His family are bereaved indeed and the community has lost a valuable citizen. He leaves wife, some eight children to mourn, and they mourn as those bereaved. May the blessings of the Most High rest upon them.

J. A. VINCENT

John R. Graves and his wife Agness Noe are buried in the old Cobb Cemetery near Medon; Tenn. below Jackson, Tenn. Their tombstones are standing today. He came as a young man of fourteen with an oxe drawn wagon train from S. C. made up of pioneers from N. C. and S. C. The Neo's , Cobb's, Kelley's, Watson's, Harrison's and Freeman's were some of the families that traveled with the Graves. A living descendant of James Kelley married to Samantha Graves keeps the family graveyard. She and her husband aren't in the best of health and we wish others, who have loved ones buried there would endeavor to get in touch for the annual spring clean up.

He had served the Church as exhorter, leader, and steward for a number of years with fidelity and usefulness.--He was an ardent, earnest man: what he did, he did with all his might.

John R. Graves (6) was born 3 Sept. 1791 in Abbeville Dist., SC, and died 22 May 1859 in Madison Co., TN. He came as a young man of fourteen with an ox-drawn wagon train from SC, made up of pioneers from NC and SC. The Noes, Cobbs, Kelleys, Watsons, Harrisons, and Freemans were some of the families that traveled with the Graves family. He married Agness Noe on 17 (or 11) Sept. 1811. She was born 14 Jan. 1797 in TN (possibly either Franklin Co. or Lincoln Co.), and died 18 July 1865. John received a land grant in Franklin Co., TN, in 1825, and two in Lincoln Co., TN, in 1832. It would be reasonable to assume they lived in each of these counties. They then moved to Madison Co., TN, about 1828. Some of the family later migrated to Lauderdale Co., TN. Both John and Agness were buried in the old Cobb/Love Cem. near Medon, TN, below Jackson, TN. Their tombstones are standing today. A descendant of James Kelley married to Samantha Graves used to tend the family graveyard, but it gets no regular care now.

The following obituary of John R. Graves appeared in the Memphis, Arkansas and Ouachita Christian Advocate for June 9, 1859, and was written by J. A. Vincent. "John R. Graves was born in Abbeville District, S.C., Sept. 3, 1791, and died in Madison Co., TN, May 22, 1859. Brother Graves came with his parents to Middle Tennessee in 1804, where he, in Sept. 1811, was united in marriage to Miss Agness Noe, moved to Madison Co., TN, some twenty or thirty years since. BIOGRAPHY:
Little is known about John Butler. He is shown on the 1840 census to have been born between 1790 and 1800 and to have had several children. In 1823John received 40 acres "by overture of R. W. J. Warrant #4833...in the12th District."
This forty acres was probably a military grant from NC. In 1838, he relinquished his interest in Elias Butler's estate to the younger Elias for $2111.10. Joshua Butler attested to this document also. John livedto be 94 years old.

John, age 67, is enumerated with his brother, Joshua Butler in the 1850 Census for the 18th district of Carroll Co., Tennessee.

John, age 74, is enumerated with Jackson Jones, who married Elizabeth Bruton Butler in the 1860 Census for the 14th district of Carroll C.,Tennessee.

3. John F.2 Butler (Elias1) (middle name Franklin?) was born circa 1782 and died in 1876. He married Phoebe Adeline Windsor (her surname is sometimes seen as Solomons (Solomon would be more likely); no proof of this mar. has been found. It is not certain that "Phoebe Adeline Windsor" or "Phoebe Adeline Windsor Solomons" actually existed. Although a Phoebe Butler left a will dated 1835 in Carroll Co., it was proven in Apr 1840 prior to the census that year; since the 1840 census for John Butler shows a female of the age to be John's wife and since John is not known to have remarried (nor is the death date of any wife even known), it is not likely that Phoebe the legator was the wife of John. The sole heir in this Phoebe Butler's will was a James P. Butler, so far an unknown person; neither John Butler nor any children were mentioned, another fact making it less likely that this Phoebe Butler was connected to John Butler (although it may also reflect Phoebe's possible dissatisfaction with her immediate family). Robert Allen reports that a month after this Phoebe died, "the court gave permission to have her body exhumed, the implication being that she had died under suspicious circumstances. Nothing further is said of the matter in the court records").
Some sources include children Joshua M., John (or John Calvin), and Thomas E., but there is no specific evidence for any of these 3, particularly for the supposed son John Calvin Butler. The details associated with the non-existent person John Calvin Butler actually apply loosely to a real person named Calvin J. Butler; however, no proof of the identity of the parents of Calvin J. Butler has ever come to light. Around 1980, researcher Allen Pendergraft incorrectly concluded that Calvin J. Butler was actually named John Calvin Butler; Mr. Pendergraft also moved Calvin's birthdate several years back in time to account for non-existent marriages erroneously attributed to Calvin. Mr. Pendergraft was fond of using rather strict naming rules, which he had devised, to make tentative guesses concerning the names of unknown parents and grandparents (using the given names of children); occasionally he also "corrected" the names of persons who, so he believed, went by their middle names rather than their first names. For example, he occasionally theorized that someone known in adulthood as "Henry John Smith" might have actually been named "John Henry Smith", but chose to go by his middle name Henry in order to avoid being confused with other persons named John Smith. Or, if the oldest son in a family were named Henry John Smith, Mr. Pendergraft would tentatively note on the working copies of his family group sheets that the mother's surname was John until he found other information to the contrary. Unfortunately, copies of his working family group sheets, which he freely made available to other researchers and which often contained such unproven suppositions, are in several libraries around the country and have been incorporated into the records of numerous genealogists and also into several published works, with the result that his suppositions are now considered "facts". In the specific case of Calvin J. Butler, there is no record that Calvin ever went by anything other than Calvin, Calvin J., or C. J. Butler; nowhere is he called John, and in fact it is more likely that his middle name is Jones and his namesake the famous NC general and land owner Calvin Jones (sons in many families located in NC, TN, and elsewhere were named after Calvin Jones and his brother Atlas Jones; instances of this in the American South are nearly as numerous as those where sons are named after beloved divines such as Lorenzo Dow, James O'Kelly, John Calvin, or Martin Luther). At best, Mr. Pendergraft's ad-hoc naming rules could perhaps be used to suggest avenues for further research, but their results cannot be accepted as proof of anything. Anyone using such data should independently verify all information before sharing their own research with others, especially through formal publication.
Evidence that Wm. L., Martha W., and Judith J. were ch. of John is not available. The 1830 census of Montgomery Co. NC (not Carroll Co. TN) lists a John Butler 11100001-0112101; assuming that son William L. is already living separately, this listing can account for Martha W. and Judith but leaves the other 3 males and 4 females unidentified. Note that the only 1830 census listing for a John Butler in Carroll Co. TN is 00001-100100001, which doesn't match the age of John, son of Elias. The listing for John Butler in the 1840 census of Carroll Co. is 00110001-00010001, agreeing with approx. birthyear of 1782 and indicates a wife still living and possibly 3 ch. b. after 1820, also currently unidentified, bringing the total of unidentified children associated with John Butler to 6; some of those enumerated may be grandchildren or other persons, however. Also, it is possible that John Butler was estranged from his children later in life, as he is living with other Butler families in 1850 and 1860, so those later censuses provide no additional information concerning his family. He apparently left no will.
More census discussion: John Butler may have appeared on the census of 1810 in Montgomery, NC (p. 575: J. Butler 30010-10010; although no John Butler is explicitly listed in this county in 1810, this J. Butler may be John Butler, as he is listed relatively close to (on the page before) E. Butler 11101-10201, supposed to be John's father Elias Butler). Also note a John Butler 1110001-0112101, no slaves, in 1830 census of Montgomery Co. NC, which agrees with the 1840 census in Carroll Co. TN in several respects and so could tentatively considered to be the same family. As noted above, a John Butler is enumerated in Carroll Co. TN in 1830 (John Butler 00001-100100001), but this data doesn't match the age of John, son of Elias, or his 'known' family and this John Butler is so far unidentified. Other evidence, such as the mar. location for his dau. Martha and birthplaces of Martha's children, suggests that John Butler did not leave the Montgomery Co. NC area until just prior to 1840, perhaps after his fathers's 1838 death or estate settlement in Carroll Co. TN; John's brother James may also have not left NC until about this time. Additional information such as land records should be analyzed to better determine when they moved and to minimize confusion between these families and others in Carroll Co. TN and Montgomery Co. NC. He appeared on the census of 1840 Carroll, TN (p. 74: John Butler 00110001-00010001). He was enumerated with Joshua Butler in 1850 Carroll, TN, where his age was recorded as 67. In 1860 he was age 74 (enum. with Jackson Jones, who married Elizabeth Bruton Butler).
Children of John F.2 Butler and Phoebe Adeline Windsor all b.NC, were as follows:
18. i. William L.3, m. Nancy (--?--); b. circa 1800.
19. ii. Martha W., m. James Sanders; b. 25 May 1814.
20. iii. Judith J., b. 23 Feb 1817; m. Claiborne J. Parish.

found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~b2222b/descent/Elias001.htm

3. ii. John F.; b. circa 1782, m. Phoebe Adeline Windsor.
iii. Elias F.; b. circa 1785 (or 1795); d. 1846 MO (Elias was alive May 1836 per his father's will, and apparently was involved in later transactions concerning settlement of his father's estate); m. Elizabeth Carroll. He lived in New Madrid, MO on 9 Oct 1838
(John Butler sells his interest in estate of Elias Butler to Elias Butler of New Madrid, MO, presumably his brother).4 Cari Hager ([email protected]) says Elias had 2 wives Elizabeth Brigham and Clarah Clark; Robert Allen's data also shows the same two wives, Clarrah Clark from the data of Herbert Russ and Elizabeth Brigham from the data of Allen Pendergraft. However, no proof has been forthcoming for any marriage of this Elias or, for that matter, any wife's first name. Allen Pendergraft's data as recorded by Kathy Whitmire says "Thomas Elias" (a hybrid of two dif. people, Elias and Thomas) mar. Clarrah Clark ca. 1804 and Eliz. Brigham ca. 1835, and then d. ca. 1835 in New Madrid Co. MO; however, as noted above, Elias was apparently still alive in New Madrid Co. MO in 1838; there is much to be desired concerning the records associated with this Elias Butler. Note that some researchers say Eliz. Carroll married Joshua Butler, son of Elias; more data concerning Eliz. Carroll is required.

Notes
Note N3757Found 8 houses away from William S Butler in 1850. With Joshua Butler, presumed son. Joshua has a daughter named Adeline. 1840 has a male 15-19 in household that could be William. This same child does not appear in 1830. This may be simply an error, or William may be another relative that was taken in by the Butlers. William named his first son John. John's wife apparently died before 1850. She may have been Elizabeth Hawkins.

FORM MALONE AND ALLIED FAMILIES
By Dr. Randolph A. Malone
Pg. 9

Randolph Malone states that Malone roots are deep in Irish history and extend beyond that, and that during the reign of King David in Israel, over a thousand years before Christ, the Melesians conquered Ireland.

The Malones descended from these early Irish kings of Melisian descent, and from the seventh century A. D. onward, were a principal family in the County of Westmeath. The O'Malones were descendants of Conner and were originally of Connacht. The property of the O'Malones, a branch of the O'Connors, King of Connaught, and their prooerty in the barony of Brawney, in the County of Westmeath, were large and fertile.

At the close of the 17th Century, the Malones were one of the principal families in Ireland. Three Malones were in the 1689 Irish Parliament and the Rev. William Malone (1585 - 1659) was superior of the Jesuit Mission to Ireland. Anthony Malone (1700 -
1776) was a brilliant orator and chancellor of the Exchequer. His brother Edmund (1704 - 18 16) was a noted judge and also a member of Parliament. His son, Edmond Malone (1740 - 1812), a close friend of Johnson, Boswell and Edmund Burke, was a famous Shakespearean critic.

From these Irish roots the Malones immigrated to Colonial Virginia in the mid 17th Century.

Tracing the growth and development of the early Malone family in the Colonial period has been difficult because records in Charles City County, Virginia were largely destroyed in 1862 when General McClelland's troupes passed through in 1862. Union troops also destroyed most of the early records of Prince George County, the main area where Malone forebears settled and a daughter county of Charles City County,

In 1865, Daniel Malone [1-1] first appears in records in Charles County, VA where an early deed suggests that Malones were settled close to the south side of the James River. From 1665 - 1725, or maybe earlier, the family along with others closely associated moved southward, and in next found in surviving records were living along the border of Prince George County and Surry County north of the Nottaway River in a few square miles known in areas known as Jones Hole Swamp, Turkey Egg Creek; Reedy Creek, Southwester Swamp and Stony Creek. These waterways identify the locations of not only these early Malones, but their immediate descendants. Some of these Malones, in the period beyond 1725, acquired property and may even have moved south of the Nottaway River into Brunswick County, formed in 1720 along the southern Virginia border.

Randolph Malone indicates that the 1946 book of Eva Earnshaw Malone titled Jeremiah Dumas Malone stated that "Daniel Malone came to Virginia from County Westmeath, Ireland in 1655, a royalist fleeing from Cromwell.'' He states that although primary or secondary documentation for this have not been found, in spite of the fact that Daniel Malone would have been 12 years old in 1655, historical facts would agree with it, Family member Clint Malone researched this very subject and states as follows:

The importance of the Irish-English struggle to the Malone family climaxed in the time from 1649-1655. Murder and pillaging of the Irish families and land reached horrific levels. Oliver Cromwell landed in Dublin in 1640, and the following months would prove most horrid in Irish history. P. T. Sherlock states that Cromwell's purpose was to inflict a "sterner and firmer policy" on Ireland. Many women and children were banished to the West Indies, where they would "starve and die and rot" ... On September 11, 1649 Cromwell massacred 2,600 members of the garrison and other townspeople in Drogheda ... The County of Westmeath (the Malone family home county) is not far west of Drogheda, and news of the massacre spread quickly... During this time Malone ideas of refuge and freedom in America were born.

Daniel Malone (1-1) is apparently this Malone family's earliest known Virginia
ancestor. Little is known about him or his immediate descendants because most Charles City County records were destroyed in 1862 by McClelland's Union Army in the Civil War. The following is revealed by what few records are available:

On February 1, 1665, Daniel Malone 1-1 is first recorded in Charles City County at a court in Westover giving a deposition to the court justice Robert Wynne, also a Malone ancestor. Daniel, in this deposition is noted to be about 22 years of age, indicating his birthdate is about 1643. At this time Court Justice Col. Robert Wynne was about 43 years old.

The next Malone in existing records occurs ten years later in 1675 when Mary Maloone and Christopher Harrison witnessed an affidavit made by Rebecca Harrison. No other Malones are mentioned besides these two in Charles City County until the early 1690's, and no other Mary Malone is noted in records until 40 years later in 1717, so it might be assumed Daniel and Mary Malone were husband and wife, though no proof of their relationship is known to exist. The next record of Daniel Malone is again found in 1679 in Charles City Co., VA when Dan'l. Malone, noted in Court Orders three times in the winter and spring of 1679, is a defendant in a civil suit with Eusebias King, Daniel would have been about 36 years old at this time.

If Daniel Malone is indeed the progenitor of the Virginia Malones, he was probably dead by 8-3-1688 and his wife remarried. At a court on that date, "Robert Mallone, an orphan, and with consent of his father-in-law John Raine (?), chooses Samuel Tatem his guardian, who promises (to) allow the orphan at the end of his term, the usual things, and to use his utmost endeavor to cure his head." (We must remember that in Colonial records of that era "father-in-law" was also used to mean "stepfather.") Robert's head must have healed, because he received from the Charles City Co. Court 200 lbs of tobacco for killing wolves in 1694. Robert must have been a very young man in 1694. No further mention of Robert, Mary or Daniel Malone is found in existing Charles City Co. records. A Robert Malone married Mary Harrison in Somerset Co, MD. in 1728, but he is not likely to be the same Robert Malone, since the Somerset Co. Robert lived until 1779, which would make him about 100 years old at his death. What does stand out in these records is how intimately this Malone family was related to the Harrison family in the few records we have of them.

From the above records we can suggest the following summary: Daniel Malone, born about 1643 and living in Charles City, Co, VA appears to be the earliest Virginia Malone and probable progenitor of the southern Malone family. It would appear that his wife was Mary _____, noted in records there dated 1675. How many children he may have had is unknown, but it is likely that one child was Robert Malone who was not of age in 1688, and that his Malone mother had remarried John Raine It would seem, then, that Daniel Malone had died by 1688 and his widow had married John Raine. Robert Malone must have been a young man on his own by 1694. There is no proof of these relationships, but since Daniel, Mary and Robert are the only Malones mentioned in Charles City County, VA records, the circumstantial evidence is suggestive. The other Malone boys were probably too young to be apprenticed out at the time of that record.

According to Dr. Randolph A. Malone, John's name is "Melen" in records. He is noted almost as early as Daniel Malone a short distance away in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. On May, 1667, he is noted there witnessing the will of Hugh Kinsey.

Dr. Randolph mentions a John Malone in the same generation as Danial Malone, but does not comment on a possible relationship. He states that, "It is of interest that many early Virginians were attracted to land in Maryland when it began to be colonized in the period 1634 to 1700. John Malone left his will in Anne Arundel County, MD, probated April 13, 1676, in which he left legacies to Sarah Cole and to John Wilmoth, both familiar family names to southern Malones.

John Malone was born Sep 14, 1778, according to a family Bible published in 1846. This Bible was in the possession of Mrs. Lem Owens of Malone, AL, in 1953. The 1850 census gives his place of birth as Virginia. However, he appears to have grown up in Rutherford Co. NC, and married Gracie Eaves there in 1800. Gracie was probably the daughter of Burrell Eaves and Issa Malone. John and Gracie lived in SC for several years and at least two of their children were born there, Spencer,in 1812, and Robert Lewis. The county is unknown. By 1817 or so, the family had moved to Jasper Co. GA. In January 1818, John bought half of Lot 74 in the 17th District, with Benjamin Malone as witness (Jasper Co. DB 8-357). In December 1825 he bought additional land from Benjamin Cook (DB A-447). John was on the 1820 census in Jasper adjacent to Samuel W. Jackson, his son-in-law. In 1827, John won Lot 130 in District 4 of Coweta Co. in the Land Lottery. By 1830, he had moved to Butts Co. GA, and in March 1830 he was administrator of the estate of John Malone, Jr., thought to be his son (Butts Co. DB B-211). John Sr. was on the 1830 census in Butts Co. By 1833, John had moved to Meriwether Co. GA. In October 1833, he bought the west half of Lot 9 in the 8th District of Meriwether Co. from Samuel W. Jackson, with Jones Malone among the witnesses (Meriwether DB C-286). In 1835, he bought an additional 50 acres of an adjacent lot (DB D-76). Later that same year he sold this 50 acres (DB D-281). And in 1850 he sold the land he had purchased in 1833 to James Moreland (DB S-113). John and Gracie were on the 1840 and 1850 censuses in Meriwether Co. She apparently died in the 1850's. John is alone on the 1860 census there, aged 82. No estate records have been found for John. John and Gracie are thought to have had at least seven sons and a daughter. Of these, Lavinia, Spencer, Robert Lewis, and Ledford Bayles are known from family sources. Jones lived adjacent to John in both Jasper and Meriwether, witnessed deeds, etc., and so is thought to have been a son. John Jr.'s death was mentioned in the Ledford B. Malone family Bible, and John Malone Sr. was the administrator of his estate in Butts Co. Burwell's death was also mentioned in the L. B. Malone Bible, and he was living in Jasper in 1827 in the same militia district as John Sr., and was also living near Jones Malone in 1830 Pike Co. Also, Gracie's father's name was Burwell. William B. Malone's death is mentioned in the L. B. Malone Bible, and there is no further information on him. John and his sons ran a blacksmith's shop in Greenville.

6. George Malone (1677 Charles City, Charles, Virginia - 1762 Surry, Surry, Virginia)

From Carol Middleton:

Daniel MALONE and Susan FLORADAY

Husband: Daniel Malone

LifeNotes: Shown on the 1704 Quit Rent rolls for 100 acres in Prince George Co, VA. He was living on the south side of the James River in the area that became Prince George County 1700.

Had dealings with "Col. Bolling, Col. Hardyman, and Maj. Wynn", as is evidenced by the list of his debts (see below).

Born: in Charles City Co, VA
Married:
Died: after 1713.

Parents: maybe Daniel Malone and Mary (Harrison?)
Wife: Susan A. Floraday

LifeNotes: after her husband died, on 7/15/1713 Susan (A.) Floraday signed the list of Daniel' s debts:

To Col. Bolling, Col. Hardyman, Thomas Simmons, Maj. Wynn, John Ellerson, Mr. Epes, William Ramey, George Pasmore, James Lodge,

Richard Mones, Joshua Lessenby, Robert Bynetree, William Epes, Jr., John More, to total £15/15/4 [£15, 15 shillings, 4 pence].

Signed: Susan A. Floraday, Daniell Mallone.
Susan Floriday, relict of Daniell Malone, dec'd, returned above account and it was recorded (Prince George County, Virginia Wills & Deeds 1710-1713) So- who is Susan?? Could FLOWERDAY be a variation of FLOWERDIEU??

Much information Malone information is based on Randolph Malone's Malones and Allied Families, with thanks especially to Randolph Malone and also to James Crawford Woodyard.

Daniel MALONE and wife Mary (HARRISON?)

He is the most likely candidate for progenitor of the Malone family in America. Court records of Justice Robert Wynne show Daniel in Charles City Co, VA by 1665; he was shown to be about 22 years old.

In 1679 was shown as a defendant in a civil suit with Eusebias King, noted in Court Orders 3 times in winter and spring of 16790. Shown as a land owner in 1718.

Born: between 1642-3 in County Westmeath, Ireland
Died: by 8/3/1688

Mary (Harrison) - Along with Christopher Harrison, "Mary Malone" witnessed an 1675 affidavit made by Rebecca Harrison in Charles City County. What is that relationship? Does that indicate Mary was a Harrison? She most likely remarried after Daniel's death, to John Raine by 4/1688.

Their children probably were:

1. Robert Malone was probably a teenager when his mother remarried in 1688.

"Robert Mallone, an orphan, and with consent of his father-in-law John Raine, chooses Samuel Tatem his guardian and promises (to) allow the orphan at the end of his term, the usual things, and to use his utmost endeavor to cure his head." In 1694, received 200 pounds of tobacco bounty for killing wolves.

Robert's children might have been:
---- Isham Malone (b. ca 1718; m. Judith Cole and they lived in Lunenburg Co, VA, later went to NC; d. 1815 NC),

---- Robert Malone (m. Mary Harrison on 9/12/1728, Stepney Parish, Somerset Co.-now Wicomico Co, MD; was back in VA by 1738); deeded an Amelia Co, VA plantation to Isham Malone in 1745),

----maybe Daniel Malone,
---- William Malone (b. 1730 VA; d. 1826, Clarke Co, GA).

2. Daniel Malone II (born about 1675 in Charles City Co, VA and Died after 1713). He married Susan A. FLORADAY:

Shown on the 1704 Quit Rent rolls for 100 acres in Prince George Co, VA. He was living on the south side of the James River in the area that became Prince George County 1700. He had dealings with "Col. Bolling, Col. Hardyman, and Maj. Wynn", as is evidenced by the list of his debts (see below).

Daniel married Susan Floraday. Their known child: Mary Malone, and their probable children:

---- Nathaniel Malone (m. Mary Wynne, daughter of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith),
---- William Malone (m. Anne Tucker?),
---- George Malone,
---- Daniel Malone (m. Mary Busby),
---- Michael Malone.

After her husband died, on 7/15/1713 Susan (A.) Floraday signed the list of Daniel' s debts:
To Col. Bolling, Col. Hardyman, Thomas Simmons, Maj. Wynn, John Ellerson, Mr. Epes, William Ramey, George Pasmore, James Lodge, Richard Mones, Joshua Lessenby, Robert Bynetree, William Epes, Jr., John More, to total £15/15/4 [£15, 15 shillings, 4 pence].

Signed: Susan A. Floraday, Daniell Mallone.

Susan Floriday, relict of Daniell Malone, dec'd, returned above account and it was recorded (Prince George County, Virginia Wills & Deeds 1710-1713).

Daniel MALONE and Susan FLORADAY

Note: this is as near as I can figure but unproved. If Daniel is not my forepersons, then Robert and his wife were (see above)

Daniel and Susan's children probably were:

1. Mary Malone. She is the only known child. Could it be that she married George Booth??

2. Nathaniel Malone, born between 1675-81 in Charles City Co, VA. Married Mary Wynne, daughter of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith, about 1690. Their children: Phoebe Malone, Courtney Malone, Mary Malone, William Malone (b. ca 1703 VA; marred Ann Booth about 1717; d. 1775-87 Dinwiddie Co, VA), Thomas Malone (m. Millicent Chappelle?; d. after 1807), Nathaniel Malone (b. ca 1712; m. Christian Linnington; d.12/18/1758 Sussex Co, VA), Daniel Malone, Drury Malone, Frances Malone (m. Joseph Harper), Amey Malone (unmarried; left a mulatto in her father's will and the care of her younger sisters), Mary Malone (not of age in 1732), Courtney Malone. Nathaniel Malone died about 1731-2 in Surry Co, VA.

3. William Malone, born ca 1670-85 VA. Was a land owner in Surry Co, VA by 1718. Married Ann -?. They lived near Nathaniel Malone and adjacent to Christopher and Nathaniel Robertson. Their children: William Malone, Jr. (m. Mary Hill, daughter of Richard Hill and Hannah Briggs; owned land in Nottoway River Swamp in 1727; see the text of William's will), John Malone, Elizabeth Malone, Sarah Malone, Anne Malone, Amey Malone, Hannah Malone, Mildred "Milley" Malone, Agnes Malone. Died 1745, Surry Co, VA. His land was divided between his two sons in his will, which was witnessed by Robert Wynne (son of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith). See the text of his will.

4. George Malone. Married Mary-?.
5. John Malone, Sr.
6. Daniel Malone, born between 1695-98 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA

In surveys by Robert Bolling is stated "99 acres for Daniel Malone on both sides of Jones Hole Swamp and the Reedy Branch"; Daniel was shown living there in 1717 near George Malone. Married Mary Busby, daughter of Thomas and Mary Busby, sister of Simon Busby (the elder Busby family lived near George Malone and left his daughter Mary one shilling in his will and land on Pond's Swamp to Simon), about 1717 on VA. Their known child: Mary Malone (b. 3/20/1719-20, Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA). It is also speculated that Daniel and Mary were parents of Simon Malone. Daniel Malone died in Prince George Co, VA.

7. Michael Malone

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nathaniel MALONE and Mary WYNNE

Husband: Nathaniel Malone

LifeNotes: He was granted 99 acres in 1715. Owned property adjacent to Jones Hole Swamp, a gift from his father-in-law Thomas Wynne and he is metioned in the deed. Also owned property in Sussex Co, and Surry Co, VA (part of earlier Charles City Co, VA). In 1712 he was arrested and fined £25 for dealing with the Tuscorora Indians.

Seems to have recovered his good name by 1715, because on 3/23/1715, Nathaniel Malone was granted 215 acres on both sides of Sappony Creek, beginning on the west side, adjacent to Thomas Thrower's land.

In 1717 Nathaniel was engaged to make peace with the Seneca. Thomas Wynne, his father-in-law was also an interpreter for Indian affairs.

In 1718 Nathaniel was contracted by the Saponies to purchase back a Saponie woman who had been taken captive by "some forreign Indians"; he was to be paid 120 buck skins. A "down-payment" of 90 skins had been paid when the woman died. the "Great Men of the Saponie" wanted their skins back and Nathaniel had to appear in court to answer their complaints; he was ordered to return the skins.

Nathaniel Malone was business partners with his neighbor George Booth. On 9/19/1721 Nathaniel deeded 100 acres of his Sappony Creek land to George Booth. Mary Wynne signed her release to the land too. Booth was granted an additional 850 acres adjacent to Nathaniel on the southwest side of Stony Creek and on the north side of the Nottaway River, and on Sappony Creek adjacent to Thomas Thrower. On 3/29/1721 a survey shows Nathaniel and George owning 300 acres together on both sides of Turkey Creek.

Another neighboring family of the Malones and the Booths were the Jones. On 9/13/1723 John Jones Jr. was granted 95 acres on the north side of the Nottaway River extending along the south side of Sappony Creek, also bordering the land of Nathaniel Malone. William Jones was granted land on the other side of Nathaniel's property from George Booth, along both sides of Turkey Egg Creek north of the Nottaawy River and bordering land of Sloman Wynne and William Parham (William Parham had land granted on 7/9/1724).

Other neighbors were Robert Wynne, Mary Wynne's brother, living on Jones Hole Swamp. William Malone, Nathaniel's brother lived nearby too. William Moore, Nathaniel Robertson (whose son Drury Robertson married Winifred Malone, daughter of William Malone and Ann Booth. Roberston's son Nathaniel married Winifred Malone, daughter of William Malone, Nathaniel's brother), and Edward Winfield were living close by.

Born: between 1680-85 in Charles City Co, VA

William MALONE and Ann BOOTH

Husband: William Malone

LifeNotes: Was of age in 1724. Lived in Prince George Co, VA (Prince George became Dinwiddie Co, in 1752).

First found in a deed between "William Tucker and Elisa his Wife of Prince George County of the one part and William Mallone the Son of Nathaniel Mallone of Surry County the other part. Witnessth that the said William Tucker and Elisa his Wife for and in consideration of the Sum of five Shillings.,," deed to William Mallone 143 acres "on the North Side of Stony Creek in the said county of Prince George." The land was described "Beginning at a Holly on the Bank of the said Creek in County LInes, thence East thirty degrees North two hundred poles to a corner, thence north five degrees West one hundred and twenty poles to a corner, thence west thirty degrees soutth hundred and ten poles to Stony Creek, thence down the vanes as it meanders to the beginning." Signed Wm. (X) Tucker and Elisa (X) Tucker. Wit: Geo. Hamelton Jun. Michael Wallis, Litt. Hardyman.

Neighbors were the Tuckers, Nathaniel Malone and George Booth, Sr. Received a gift of land from his father by way of a land swap with William Tucker. A Prince George County record of 7/11/1723, says "... 300 acres ordered to William Tucker from Nathaniel Malone, for whom it was surveyed ..." Was left no land in his father's will because he had received the land 8 years before hs father died. Known as William Malone of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA (or Dinwiddie Co.)

In 5/1748, William began to amass his Brunswick Co, VA property for the apparent purpose of providing land for his children., On 5/5/1748, "William Malone of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, for the love I have for my son-in-law Drury Robertson of St. Andrews Parish in Brinswick Co, deed 180 acres in St. Andrews Parish on the south side of the Meherrin River ..." Later a deed gift of a slave girl named Phan was given for "love, good will and affection to my son-in-law Drury Robertson."

On 7/29/1762, "William Malone of Dinwiddie Co. deeds to George Malone of Brunswick for 5 shillings "one negroe Toney" and acreage on the north side of Taylor's Creek; "the land on whicxh he now lives, the same that was granted to the said William Malone in Williamsburg."

On 1/1/1764 in a deed, "William Malone of Bristol Parish, Dinwiddie Co. deeds for affection to son Reuben Malone of Brunswick Co. all the land belonging to William Malone on the south side of Taylor's Creek, and one negro boy, Signed: William Malone and Ann (X) Malone."

Note that William's eldest son William did not receive a deed gift because by law the eldest son would inherit his father's lands in Bristol Parish.

Additional land deeded to William Malone of Bristol Parish in Dinwiddie Co, for £100 in current money, by John and Martha Williamson of Prince George County on 6/19/1753 355 acres bounded by Stony Creek and bounded partly by Stoney Creek at Pigg Quarter Gut, Mr. George Booth, John Curtis, the Dinwiddie line, the Duckpond Branch and the said Malone."

Note that the land of the other Wm. Malone (whose will was proved 1745) was never described as on Stoney Creek. That Wm. Malone lived at Southwark Parish on the Nottaway River, very close to this Wm. Malone.

Born: 1703 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA
Married: ca 1724 n Brunswick Co, VA
Died: 1774 in Dinwiddie Co, VA. Left a will that was destroyed in the Civil War.

Parents: Nathaniel Malone and Mary Wynne. See his Malone page and also see her Wynne page.
Wife: Ann Booth

LifeNotes: After William died, Ann was left with control of only 204 acres of William's extensive holdings. She is shown paying taxes on 204 acres in 1787-99 (after William's death), then in 1799-1800 William Pettipool paid taxes on 100 acres conveyed to him by Ann Malone. From 1787-1790 Richard Graves paid taxes on "Carter's 300 acres and Loyd's 159 acres, conveyed by Ann Malone."

Born: about 1720 Surry Co, VA

He was a witness to a gift deed from his father to his brother Rueben; that land was also on Taylor's Creek. Was a Revotionary War soldier. Married-1st: Sarah (Sallie) Bass, probably the daughter of James and Elizabeth Bass, in 1756 in Brunswick Co, VA. See this Malone page. Theobald Butler

Birth: 1224 Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland
Death: 1248 (aged 23–24) France
Burial: Arklow Friary, Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland
Memorial #: 59809761
Bio:
3rd Chief Butler of Ireland. Son of Theobald le Botiller, 2nd Baron Butler, 2nd Chief Butler of Ireland and Joan de Marisco, daughter of Geoffrey de Marisco, Justiciar of Ireland.

Husband of Margery de Burgh, daughter of Richard Mor de Burgh, Lord Connacht. They had one son, Theobald, 4th Chief Butler of Ireland

He and his wife owned several lands including the manors of Ardmaile and Kilmorakill. Theobald was created Justiciar of Ireland in 1247 and supported King Henry III in the baron wars.

Theobald was buried by his father at Arklow. Despite the friary was not built properly until his son founded it, he is reportedly buried here, perhaps what existed before the friary was built.

The earliest records of the family found by Mrs. Parrish were in "Early Tennessee Tax Lists: 1796-97." Family traditions say that three Hamilton brothers, Thomas, Benjamin and Samuel, came to Eastern Kentucky in the early 1800s. Other records I have seen don't list these brothers.

Ann BOOTH and Willam MALONE
Wife: Ann Booth
After William died, Ann was left with control of only 204 acres of William's extensive holdings.

Born: about 1718 in Surry Co, VA
Married: 1737 in Brunswick Co, VA
Died: after 1799 in Dinwiddie Co, VA

Parents: George Booth and Mary (Malone?). See their page.
Husband: William Malone
Was of age in 1724. Lived in Prince George Co, VA (Prince George became Dinwiddie Co, in 1752).

First found in a deed between "William Tucker and Elisa his Wife of Prince George County of the one part and William Mallone the Son of Nathaniel Mallone of Surry County the other part. Witnessth that the said William Tucker and Elisa his Wife for and in consideration of the Sum of five Shillings...," deed to William Mallone 143 acres "on the North Side of Stony Creek in the said county of Prince George." The land was described "Beginning at a Holly on the Bank of the said Creek in County LInes, thence East thirty degrees North two hundred poles to a corner, thence north five degrees West one hundred and twenty poles to a corner, thence west thirty degrees soutth hundred and ten poles to Stony Creek, thence down the vanes as it meanders to the beginning." Signed Wm.

300 acres ordered to William Tucker from Nathaniel Malone, for whom itwas surveyed ..." Was left no land in his father's will because he had received the land 8 years before hs father died. Known as William Malone of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA (or Dinwiddie Co.)

In 5 /1748, William began to amass his Brunswick Co, VA property for the apparent purpose of providing land for his children., On 5/5/1748, "William Malone of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, for the love I have for my son-in-law Drury Robertson of St.

Additional land deeded to William Malone of Bristol Parish in Dinwiddie Co, for 100 in current money, by John and Martha Williamson of Prince George County on 6/19/1753 355 acres bounded by Stony Creekand bounded partly by Stoney Creek at Pigg Quarter Gut, Mr.

Malone.

John FitzThomas FitzGerald

Birth: 1250 Ireland
Death: 10 Sep 1316 (aged 65–66) Laragh, County Kildare, Ireland
Burial: Grey Abbey, Kildare, County Kildare, Ireland
Plot: Franciscan Friary
Memorial #: 102751822
Bio:
John FitzThomas FitzGerald, 1st Earl of Kildare was an Irish nobleman in the Peerage of Ireland, as 4th Lord of Offaly from 1287 and subsequently as 1st Earl of Kildare from 1316.
He was the eldest son of Thomas FitzMaurice FitzGerald and Rohesia de St. Michael.
In 1291, he has a serious dispute with William Vescy, Lord of Kildare, Lord Justice of Ireland, about whom there were many complaints of oppression and neglect of the country's defences. As champion of the complainants John Fitzgerald, by then 4th Lord of Offaly, their paths had crossed and instead of addressing the issues Vescy charged Fitzgerald with minor charges of slander and libel. Fitzgerald appealed to King Edward II, who, examined and judged the matter impartially, summoned them both to London to hear the cases, where it appeared FitzGerald had the advantage, challenging the Lord Justice to clear his name by combat, which was accepted. However, Vescy fled to France, whereupon the King pronounced Lord Offaly innocent, and settled upon him Vescy's lordships and manors of Kildare, Rathangan, &c., which were forfeited to the Crown.
In 1296 and 1299 he was summoned to fight for the Crown in the Scottish campaigns of Edward II. With John Wogan, Lord Justice, and others he went a third time to war in Scotland in 1301-2.
In 1307, with his son-in-law Sir Edmund Butler, he dispersed rebels in Offaly who had razed the castle of Geashill and burnt the town of Leix. In 1312 he was sent as General at the head of an army into Munster to suppress armed Irish rebels. On May 25, 1315, Edward Bruce, brother to King Robert the Bruce of Scotland, entered the north of Ireland with 6000 men, was crowned King of Ireland at Dundalk, and wasted the country. Lord Offaly, among others, commenced warfare to resist Bruce, leaving "great slaughter" of Scots and the Irish irregulars in his service. Edward Bruce was eventually defeated and killed in the battle of Dundalk.
As a reward for his services King Edward II created Fitzgerald Earl of Kildare by Letters Patent dated May 14, 1316, the year in which he founded the friary at Adare, county Limerick.
However he died that same year, on Sunday September 10, 1316, at Laraghbrine, and was interred in the Grey Abbey, Franciscan Friary of Kildare.
He had married Blanche de La Roche, daughter of John de La Roche, Lord Fermoy and Maud de Waleys, by whom he had two sons and two daughters:
Gerald (d.1303)
Thomas FitzGerald, 2nd Earl of Kildare, his successor.
Joan FitzGerald, married in 1302 to Edmund Butler, Earl of Carrick.
Elizabeth FitzGerald, married to Nicholas Netterville, ancestor of Viscount Netterville.

Umberto III (1135, Avigliana, Piedmont – 1189), surnamed the Blessed, was Count of Savoy from 1148 to 1189. His parents were Amadeus III of Savoy and Mahaut (or Mafalda, or Matilda) of Albon, the sister of Guy IV of Dauphinois. His memorial day is March 4.
According to Cope[1]
Umberto III, who reigned from 1149 to 1189...was a man of irresolute spirit who was disconsolate at being born a prince and preferred the seclusion of a monastery. He only renounced his chosen state of celibacy so as to give his land an heir.
His first wife died young; his second marriage ended in divorce. Umberto gave up and became a Carthusian monk. However, the nobles and common people of Savoy begged him to marry yet again, which he reluctantly did. This third wife gave him two more daughters, and Umberto attempted to return to the monastic life yet again. Finally he was prevailed upon to marry for a fourth time, and this wife, Beatrice, produced the son who would ultimately succeed him.
In 1188 he founded the Monastery of Sant'Antonio di Ranverso.

Clemetina von Zähringen

Birth: 1137
Death: 1175

Nobility, only daughter of Konrad von Zähringen and Clémence de Namur. She was married to duke Henry the Lion in 1148, to strengthen the alliance between the two families. She bore him three children of which two died young. The surviving daughter Gertrud later married Knud VI of Denmark. She acted as Henrys representative in Saxony during his visit to Rome. When her brothers allied with the french king against the emperor she became a political burden for her husband. The pope annulled the marriage in 1162, officially because of consanguinity, but the fact that after 14 years Henry was still without heir might have been a reason too. In 1164 she married Humbert III de Maurienne and bore him two daughters.
