Mary Lafoon Keith

Birth: 1749 North Carolina, USA **?? NC - not VA?
Death: 13 Feb 1846 (aged 96–97) Pumpkintown, Pickens County, South Carolina, USA
Burial: Oolenoy Baptist Church Cemetery, Pumpkintown, Pickens County, South Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 113259094
Bio:
Notes for MARY LAFOON:Mary Lafoon was the daughter of Matthew Laffoon, Sr. & Mary Laffoon
SOURCE: Lafoon Homepage, Contact: Charles Edwin Lafoon 2/10/2004**"During the Revolution, Mary Lafoon Keith was many times a heroine. One time, seeing the enemy approaching, and knowing that the Americans were encamped within several miles, rode to warn them. During the ride her cape slipped from her shoulders. It was recaptured in the ensuing battle and returned to her. Pieces of it are still preserved by her descendants. From her comes the assertion that Cornelius's brother was James, grandfather of Chief Justice Marshall. The inference is strong, as it is her claim and when Cornelius removed to South Carolina, his brother James, a minister, paid him a visit. She died 1846, at the age of ninety-seven.Cornelius served as Colonel in the South Carolina Artillery. His home was burned and all he owned destroyed, while his wife and children and a few slaves fled to a rock cavern where they lived on roots and berries for a week until aid reached them.
"SOURCE: Of Keith & Kin, by Marion Frerman Henderson, 1988, Pub. Marion Frerman Henderson, 5415 Wedgewood Dr., Charlotte, NC 28210, book located Easley Library, SC Room, Easley, SC 10/10/2003 Mary Lafoone Keith (1749-1846), was the wife of Colonel Cornelius Keith Senior, inscribed, "Sacred to her memory" and a Tabletop tomb marks her grave. Mary married Colonel Keith who was in the Revolutionary War. She was many times a heroine during the war. If she heard the British were approaching, she would ride even great distances to warn the Americans. One when she was on this kind of mission, some Indians who were loyal to the British, burned her hut. A slave escaped with her children and hid in a cave by the Oolenoy River. They lived on berries, grapes and herbs until their mother returned and rescued them. The cave became known as the Mary Lafoone cave. The cave is located across the river from Miracle Hill Children's Home, a short distance away from the church.
SOURCE: United States Department of the Interior National Park Service, National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet, Section #7, Page 14. Oolenoy Baptist Church Cemetery, Pickens County, South Carolina.** from the telling and retelling of stories regarding Mary Lafoone Keith, it is very possible that her "spying" was not during the Revolutionary War, but the War of 1812. from: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/o/p/Mary-K-Copeland/GENE2-0002.html

•Note:
The acceptance of this man as a son of John & Susannah is "traditional." This John is not proven to be descendant, but is based on date and proximity of records. Before Hopkins co KY was formed, KY consisted of very large counties that were eventually whittled down. It is suspected that this John, along with presumed brothers Edmund and Arthur, are to the KY pioneers of the family, be found in Nelson co KY tax records until Hopkins was formed. Note that presumed brother James was in nearby Bedford co TN. As the SHELTONS were to the VA Slaydens, with more than a half-dozen marriages, the ASHBYS were to the W KY group here. Also, the names O'Bryan, Bourland, Orton and Sisk show up in many marriages. Among the unusual given names that may provide clues to marriages are: Thurn/Thorn, Vaden, McGary, Clendenning. It is just as likely, however, that they were named for preachers or political figures in the area. Hugh McGary was a W KY pioneer.

MINEFIELD: Another Arthur, a presumed son of Arthur Slayden 000 and presumed brother of this John , produced a son John who came to Henderson co KY, near to Hopkins, where he prospered and produced a family with similar names to those in the family treated here: John, Clifton, Robert.

Charles G Bourland to AJS (Rachel)

MINEFIELD: There were several mature John Slatons by 1793, and identifying them is not possible.

No 8479
Isaac Shelby Esq Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky To All to whom these presents shall come Greeting Know ye that by virtue and in consideration of a Certificate No 630 [skip] granted by this County Court of Henderson in November 1804 agreeably to an act of assembly for settling and improving the vacant land of this commonwealth there is granted by the said commonwealth unto JOHN SLATON a certain tract or parcel of land containing sixty-eight acres by survey bearing date the twentieth day of November one thousand eight hundred and seven lying and being in the County of Hopkins on the waters of FLAT CREEK and bounded as followeth to wit, beginning at a white oak corner of WILLIAM BOURLANDS survey running with said BOURLANDS line North seventy five East one hundred and sixty poles to a white oak in a Military line thence with said line North seventy five West two hundred and seventy poles to two poplars white oak and sycamore thence South fifteen West eighty poles to two white oaks then North fifty East Eighty poles to two sweet gums corner of said SLATONS survey thence South forty East one hundred and ten poles to the beginning [skip] fixed at Frankfort on the seventh day of December one thousand eight hundred and fifteen [skip]Isaac Shelby (M D Hardin, secretary)

Hopkins co Deed Book 2, p 121- John Slaton, Charles Bradly, Edmund Slaton and John Littlepage Commissioners appointed [skip] [Sept Term 1816] by a decree of that court pronounced in a suit in chancery [brought] by Joseph Loving and Susanna, his wife Jesse Herren and Rebecca, his wife, and Samuel Bourland, adult children and heirs-at-law of William Bourland, deceased, complainants against Martha Bourland, John Bourland and Baylis E Bourland, infant children and heirs-at-law of the said Wm Bourland, dec', Defendants [sell to James Carnahan of Hopkins for $300.60 ½] 200 acres [skip] on the waters of Flat Creek [skip] part of a 400 acres tract granted [to] Wm Bourland, dec'd, [by patent of Jan 24, 1816]

The Richland Baptist Church was formed on February 3, 1837.
During the 1830s the Highland Association of Baptists had become violently opposed to missionary effort and benevolent work, forbidding its member churches to perform any such work and persecuted those which did.
In 1837 four members of the Richland community broke away to form a new church. They were Reddick and Elizabeth O'Bryan and Isham and Sophia Slaton; who with the help of two ministers - John Bourland and Timothy Sisk - wrote the new church constitution.
The first pastor was John Bourland. The first Deacons were Reddick O'Bryan and John Slaton. The first baptisms were Emeline O'Bryan and Juliet Sanders.

It is not possible to say with certainty that these are one Hopkins man or that any of them was the Nelson man. I would say the age progression looks right, and that he died between 1840 and 1850.

NOTES:
Be it known to all men by these presents that I Edmond Hodges of Pittsylvania County have made and declared my last will and testament in writing bearing date the seventh day of September 1778. I the said Edmond Hodges by this present Codicil do ratify and confirm my said last will and testament, except my daughter Susannah Slaydon'sequal part of my moveable estate which I do hereby revoke and annul as she has since deceased. I do will and bequeath the same part of an equal part of my moveable estate which was allotted her to be equally divided among her six children viz, James Slayton, Rachel Slayton, Pattsey Slayton, John Slayton, Edmund Slayton and Arthur Porter Slayton, to them and their heirs. My will and meaning is that this Codicil be adjudged to be a part of my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of February 1782.

The William Bourland mentioned as husband of Rachel is the second William Bourland associated with this family: John 's daughter Martha married the Rev William G Bourland. The Rev Wm "of Stafford co VA" was a pioneer settler in Henderson/Hopkins co KY. He helped found the oldest Baptist Church in Henderson co KY, in 1803, and his death in 1807 is the first death noted in the newly organized Hopkins co KY. The other William, as noted above, is a son of Ebenizer Bourland. The connections between the Bourlands and Lovings are so frequent that there is a breath of hope that a connection with the Slatons and Lovings may yet be found: the name Loven Slaton/Slatton appears in later east TN, SC and north AL families. This suggests a common connection back to VA for the "unconnected" southern families.

Numerous confusing entries in Will Book 5 & 6, Hopkins co, show many of the above receiving payments by William M Slaton, from the estate of Arthur Slaton , dec'd late administrator of John Slaton. In other words, John's brother Arthur Porter was named administrator of John's estate, but died, so that William M and Martin R, sons of Arthur Porter, took over.

NOTES:
Russell Stogsdell of Dallas TX kindly provides an affadavit signed by John J , aged 70, post office Harrisburg, Saline co IL, undated but certainly from 1885, stating that he has known Nancy C Jones since birth, and that he is her uncle. Further, her marriage to John W Jones is verified as Oct 28, 1847 in IL All of this is in aid of receiving a Mexican War Pension for Nancy. John W Jones had served Co G, 3rd reg IL Volunteers.

Ephraim McLean was the son of John McLean and Margaret Mary Moore. He married Elizabeth Davidson in 1761 in Iredell County, North Carolina, daughter of John Davidson and Margaret Morrison. Together Ephraim and Elizabeth had 12 Children: John McLean, Margaret McLean,
Jane McLean, George McLean, Charles McLean, William McLean, Samuel McLean, Ephraim McLean, James McLean, Alney McLean, John Davidson McLean, and Robert Davidson McLean.

He was a member of the North Carolina House of Commons and represented Burke County at the North Carolina General Assembly of 1777.

He served his country in many capacities. He was commissioned a Captain of a regiment of Tryon County foot soldiers. He was wounded at the Battle of Kings Mountain; a memorial monument there bears his name. He served on the Rowan County Committee of Safety. He served as a Justice of the Peace. He served as a Minuteman in the Militia. He was a builder, blacksmith, surveyor and he was a Founding Member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He was my 6th Great Grandfather.

Note: There is some question as to Ephraim's birth place (USA or Scotland) and the name of his mother. If you would like to add additional/correct information, please contact me. It was important to me to create a memorial for him.
