- p. 16 & 17 -- Anthony Collings traveled back to Devon, England and on 4/20/1716 presented a bill in Chancery court to claim benefit from the estate of his grandfather Thomas Collings late of Baronshill, in parish of Ugborough, Devon who died in 1672 leaving an only son Roger Collings who is the palintiff's father. The plaintiff's grandmother Dorothy Collings succeeded to Baronshill and held it until her death four or five years ago. Roger Collings died 7 or 8 years ago and, as his only son, the plaintiff became entitled to his grandfather's estate, but James Tillie of Pentillie Castle, Esq., Winifred Spurrell, widow, plaintiff's sister, and Henry Davis of Gravesend, Kent, mariner, who married Elizaberh Collings now deceased, also plaintiff's sister, conspire with George Stroude, Esq., of Ditcham, Devon, and Alice Stroude of the same, widow, to deny the plaintiff his rights. They claim that, by a settlement made in 1672 on the marriage of the plaintiff's father to Anne Roch, now deceased, Thomas Collings conveyed Baronshill to Richard Fownes, Esq., of Whitehouse, Ugborough, and William Stroude, gent., of Higherwal, Ugborough. Both Fownes and Stroude had died but the latter's heir is his nephew George Stroude and his executrix Alice Stroud.
- In her answer Winifred Spurrell says she is the only sister now living of the plaintiff. Her grandfather Thomas Collings, anticipating a marriage between his son Roger and Anne, daughter of Jerom Roch the elder of Plymouth, Devon, by deed of 2/10/1672, assigned Baronshill to Fownes and Stroude in order to provide portions for his son and his son'sheirs. When the defendant's sister Davis entered upon Baronshill the premises were in ruinous condition and her sister had to spend much money on it. The defendant claims that she and her sister Elizabeth who died 6 years ago were the only lawful issue of Roger Collings at the time of his death.
- Henry Davis reported to the court that Anthony Collings went overseas more than 25 years ago and was supposed dead. Two seafaring men on the ship maintained that they had thrown the body overboard. He could not say if the plaintiff was the same Anthony Collings -- THUS HE LOST HIS INHERITANCE TO BARONSHILL.

Another Entry reads - At Sweet Hall family graveyard, 100 feet north of the Sweet Hall Manor house, Near West Point, King William County, Virginia, a tombstone with the inscription " Here also lies the body of Mrs Ann Claiborne, late wife of Captain Thomas Claiborne, daughter of Mr Henry Fox, born ye 20th day of May 1684, she departed this life ye 4th day of May 1733, aged 48 years, 10 months, and 17 days" shared on Ancestry by Fred_R_Ross_1234 originally shared this on 28 jul 2009
----------------------------------------------------------

In addition to the dates of 16 (hundred) and 1732, the word "William" is also readable on this monument as well as the barely readable "Thomas Claibourne."
-----------------------------------------

The monuments for Thomas Claibourne (1680-1732) and Thomas Claibourne (1704-1735) have weathered and writing is barely discernable. However, a close examination of the monument in the foreground reveals dates for 16 hundred and 1732, indicating its the monument for this particular Thomas Claibourne. Other writing, perhaps, could be discernable if the monument was carefully cleaned and examined minutely.

COL Robert Adams VVeteran

Birth: 1689 Henrico County, Virginia, USA
Death: Jun 1740 (aged 50-51) Goochland County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Adams Family Cemetery, Goochland, Goochland County, Virginia, USA
Memorial #: 45124477

Bio:
Robert is quite possibly a son of William & Mary (Walker) Adams of Martin's Hundred, now in James City County, Virginia. According to a number of researchers, records and dates show "...[it is] highly likely this is the Grandson of the first Robert Ad[d]ams of Martins Hundred."
(Excerpt from "Biography, Capt Robert Adams, Henrico Co, VA")

There are records of an earlier Robert who immigrated from England c1609 and died c1628, possibly in VA. That Robert may be this Robert's grandfather. With no reference found to a wife or siblings, it is difficult to validate this connection.

For our Robert, several land records, located at the VA State Library in Richmond, indicate he owned many acres in VA, the earliest purchase from about 1717. Most of this land is mentioned in his Will.

On 14 Feb 1712, Robert married Mourning Lewis in Henrico Co (now Goochland) VA, the daughter of William & Elizabeth (Woodson) Lewis of Turkey Island Creek, Henrico Co (now Goochland) VA.

US & International Marriage Records 1560-1900:

2) Judith Lewis Adams (1716-1774); m. Micajah Clark (1718-1808).
3) Agnes "Aggie" Adams (1718-1790); m. James Ferguson (1715-1785).
4) Mary Ann Adams (1720-1780)(twin); m. Charles Moorman Jr (1715-1778).
5) Elizabeth "Eliza" Adams (1720-1793)(twin); m. Achilles H Moorman (1713-1785).
6) Lucy Adams (b: 1722); m. John Graves.
7) Susanna "Susy" Adams (1724-bef 1765); m. Matthew Graves, brother of John.
8) Anna "the Younger" Adams (b. c1725); m. Charles Douglas.
9) Sarah "Sally" Adams (b. c1726); m1. Henry Harris (d. 1776), m2. John R Ferris.
10) Captain Robert "Old Robin" Adams Jr (1727-bef 1785); m. Penelope Flournoy Lynch (1734-1785).
11) James Adams (1730-1789); m. Cecily Ford (1735-1815).

Possibly due to failing health, Robert wrote his Will in Feb 1738 at the age of 49 yrs. He lived for two more years. His estate was left to his wife Mourning, sons James and Robert, and daughters Judith Clark, Mary Moorman, Eliza Moorman, Agnes Ferguson, Susanna, Lucy, Anna the younger and Sally.

Signed, Sealed and Published and declared to be his Last Will.

Witnessed by Henry Wood and Martin (his + mark) King.

At a Court held in Goochland Co on Jun 17, 1740, this Will was proved by the oaths of Henry Wood and Martin King to be the Act and Deed of Robert Adams and which was ordered to be recorded."

Many thanks to Ginny for the tombstone photos. These will help greatly in the research of this family. Robert also had a brother named William. Still researching to verify burial.

Thank you as well to Mezzo for sponsoring Robert's memorial.

Special thanks as well to Al for copies of Robert's Wil.

Note:
I have removed the title "Captain" from this Robert as the only evidence of a Captain Robert Adams I have found is his son "Old Robin." If someone has a military record, please contact me; it would be much appreciated.
