LT Hance Campbell “Hans” McWhorter Sr.

Birth: 1735 Pencader, New Castle County, Delaware, USA
Death: 29 Apr 1773 (aged 37–38) York, York County, South Carolina, USA
Burial: Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery, York, York County, South Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 156038835

Bio:
Hance Campbell McWhorter was born 1735 at Pencader Hundreds, New Castle County, Delaware the son of John and Mary Ann Hamilton McWhorter.

When Hance was 14 years Old, in early 1749, Grandfather Hugh McWhorter died at Pencader Hundreds, New Castle, Delaware. After his estate was settled in late 1749, Hance's father packed up the family and moved to the Marsh Creek Settlement to join others that moved there in late 1729 after landing at New Castle. Marsh Creek Settlement was located where Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania now stands which is about 100 Miles due west of New Castle.
About the year 1753, when Hance was 18, his father took up roots again and they moved to the Davidson Creek Settlement, then located in Rowan County, North Carolina. Many of the original group that came to New Castle in August 1729 had moved on and founded the Davidson Creek Settlement. Apparently messages had been sent back to Marsh Creek telling about abundant land available. So almost all of Hance's father Johns brothers and sisters as well as his mother Jane joined in the resettlement to North Carolina.

In 1756 Hance married Sarah Winsley/Winslow the daughter of Benjamin and Mary White Winsley/Winslow. After receiving land from his father they settled down and raised a family. By occupation Hance was a Wheelwright which was a very important occupation at that time.
Hance was a Lt in the French-Indian War from Rowan County. His father John and his brother-in-Law, Benjamin Winsley. Jr as well as his wife's uncle, Moses White, Jr were in the same Military Company with him during this war.(NC State Records Vol. 22, p.398) Early records:
2 June 1761- Hance's parents, John and Mary McWhorter, sold to "Hans" McWhorter 300 Acres of land for 34 pounds ajoining the lands of Alexander Osborn, John Brevard in Rowan County, North Carolina.
21 Dec 1761 Hance received a land grant from Lord Granville of 269 Acres of land on Rocky River, adjoining lands of James Robinson, Robert Brevard, Henry Potts and his father John McWhorter.
7 Nov 1764-Samuel Blyth conveyed to Hance McWhorter, "Rowan County, Wheelwright", "460 Acres of land located on the southside of the Catawba River, North of Fishing Creek" then located in North Carolina. After a boundary dispute was settled this location ended up in York County, South Carolina.
Fishing Creek runs through the City of York, York County, SC. In fact runs within a stone throw just south and west of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. From the description in the deed this church would also be located within that description. Hance's property appears to have been located in the vicinity and Church records shows Hance to be an active member.
22 Feb 1771 Hance McWhorter was one of six ruling elders of this church that signed on a deed accepting a donation of land to the church.
18 October 1772 Hance McWhorter was so weak in Body that he made his Will.
29 April 1773 Hance McWhorter died, Age 38. His will was proved 29 June 1773, York County, South Carolina.

Mary Fitzgerald Noe

Birth: 1804
Death: 1 Dec 1867 (aged 62–63)
Burial: Pine Springs Cemetery, Sulligent, Lamar County, Alabama, USA
Memorial #: 41249008

Bio:
This is the story about Thomas R. Noe and Mary Fitzgerald Noe that was sent to me by one of their descendants: "On December 1, 1867, Thomas R and Mary Noe were murdered in their Pine Springs Community home, along with a Dr. DeGraffenreid who had come to their home to tend a sick grandson. A man named Briggs had recently been released from the asylum and had been allowed to stay overnight in an out building. The grandson had been frightened of the man and had crawled beneath his bed when when he heard Briggs enter the house. When the black man who worked for the Noes came the next morning to light the lamps and start the fire to prepare breakfast, he found the bodies of Robert and Mary Noe and the doctor. The young boy crawled from beneath the bed, and he and the hired man ran to report the murders to the authorities. Briggs was captured, hiding in the loft of a barn and led authorities to where he had hidden the murder weapon, an axe handle that had been drying near the fire . . . The murder of the Noes is common knowledge not only among Noe decendants in Lamar County but among many residents in the community. The double headstone in the Pine Springs Cemetary north of Sulligent, Lamar County, with the same date of death for Thomas R and May Noe, stands as a silent testimonial to this tragic event. At one time the murder weapon was in the Sulligent Museum but later was sold at an auction to a Noe relative."--email from Judy Clonts
