Sarah2 Hibbs, the daughter of William and Hannah (Howell) Hibbs, was born in 1692, and died 2 December 1769. Sarah and Jonathan Cooper were married ca. 1714, presumably in the Byberry meeting house.
Jonathan and Sarah lived in Upper Makefield township.[34] They attended Wrightstown Preparative Meeting which in 1724 was shifted from Middletown Monthly Meeting to Buckingham. In 1734 it became a monthly meeting in its own right.[35]

Children of Jonathan and Sarah (Hibbs) Cooper:[36]

Hannah3 Cooper, b. 10 Apr; 1715; d.y.

Jeremiah Cooper, b. 30 Feb. 1716; m. Rebekah WILDMAN under the care of Middletown MM, June 1741. She gave birth to a baby a month later, the child not being her husband's. She obstinantly denied it but the meeting testified against her (disowned her) 6 July 1741.[37] He is not in the Bucks Co. tax records.

Hannah Cooper, b. 29 May 1719; m. 1739 John BALDERSTON;

Jonathan Cooper, b. 1 Sept. 1721; he appears in the tax duplicate in Upper Makefield in 1753 assessed on £10.2.6; in 1754 once for £10.1.3, and once for £10.2.6; in 1762 on £5.0.10; in 1763 on£10.2.6.[38]

Phebe Cooper, b. 29 Jan. 1723;

I am looking for the ancestry of the wife of William Henry Culp. Her name was Mary Sara and she was born about 1780 in Rowan County. I do not have a surname for her though. They moved to Perry County, Tennessee around 1805. If anyone studies the Culps please contact me at [email protected] and I will send you more information.

My mother does geneology but does not use a computer.I thought I would do some checking for.her.
She wanted to reply to your inquiry. She is a Culp. You may already have this information.
William Henry culp, a son of Henry and Barbara (Need a last name on her) was born in 1776 in Chester
County South Carolina and married Mry Sarh(don't have a last name on her ).
William Henry along with two Lentz cousins, Martin Fischer and John Ross left Rowan County January 10, 1812 and moved to Bedford County Tennessee.
Was still on the Bedford County census of 1820.
He left Bedford County shortly after the census to Wayne County and died there in 1853.
All four of Henry and Barbara's children were marries in Rowan County, but I find only the two girls.
Hannah married George Earnhart August 1793 and
Elizabeth married George Swink in 1796.
Henry married in 1797. He had two males on 1800 Rowan County census. Adam was not married in 1800. Adam had three children on 1810 census.
Adam was my ggggrandfather. Of his nine children i have the names of three. Stephen ( my ggrandfather ),
Susan(Cox) and Rachael Ann.

The only information I have on Adam Culp is that he died in 1840. He was a brother to my gggreat-grandfather Amos B. Culp who married Jane Davis.
I know Amos lived in Bedford County, TN before moving to Macoupin County, IL were my greatgrandfather was born.
I got the 1840 death date from a distant cousin named Paulette Buche. I know she use to frequent the Rootsweb Mailing Lists but I do not know if she still does or not.

Thanks for the post of Elizabeth Culp marrying George Swink. I do Swink research and was almost one hundred per cent sure that I had the right George Swink as my ggggrandfather and now this proves to me that I am correct. I am a descendent of George Swink and Elizabeth Ford that married September 4, 1807. Thanks so much. I do not know anything about the George Swink that married Elizabeth Culp.

born, lived, or died in Clifton, TN?

found at http://www.davidculp.com/genealogy.htm

John Franklin Culp(1839-1870) was born in Tennessee in 1839 probably in Wayne County. Appears on the 1850 Wayne County census as aged 11. Appears on the 1860 Perry County census as married to Mary Ann (Sowell) Culp (1836-1873). Enlisted February 17, 1863 at Columbia, TN into Company "I", 19th Tenn. Cavalry, CSA by Col. Jacob B. Biffle. Orders of Battle indicate that he most assuredly was involved in actions at the battles of Thompson Station, Chickamauga, Springhill, Franklin and after harassing Sherman on his march to Atlanta, the unit was ultimately paroled May 9,1865 at Gainesville, AL. as the 9th Tennessee Cavalry. After the war, probably facing the recrimination of Union sympathetic neighbors, the family left Tennessee and moved to Bastrop County Texas which is approximately 25 miles SE of Austin. Mary Ann Sowell had relatives already living there. The trip supposedly took nine weeks by ox cart. Frank bought a 254 acre plot to farm near Piney Creek (5 miles north of the town of Bastrop). He lived only eight more months, until August 31, 1870 and is buried in Mt. Bethel (Piney Creek) Cemetery which is accessible today. According to family tradition, Mary Ann continued on the farm until her death in 1873. Other information holds that she remarried a James A. Fletcher from the Piney Creek area. She is buried in Mt. Bethel Cemetery. Frank and Mary Ann's children were raised by her brother and sisters. They were descendants of Ryon W. Sowell and Anna Letsinger of Maury County, Tennessee. (This link is to a .doc file so that the formatting would not be lost)

Information on the Sowell family in this section provided by Ed Sowell. Thanks Ed!

Offspring of Franklin and Mary Ann Culp were:

James Henry Culp (1860-1914)

Willis Patrick "Wid" Culp (1862-1942) Was raised by his mother's brother and wife Charles Patrick (Uncle Pat) Sowell and Minerva Adaline Erwin Sowell. Wife-Ella ( House) and son, W.P. Jr.

Texanna Culp (Harvey) (1864-1957) Texanna was raised by her mother's sister and husband, Elizabeth Jerusha (Aunt Liz) Sowell Smith and Enoch K. Smith.* Texanna and Mitzi

Amos Cornelius Culp (1866-1953) was orphaned at approximately age 7 and along with his other siblings went to live with one of his aunts; either Elizabeth Jerusha (Aunt Liz) Sowell Smith or (as the Sowell family researchers believe) Sarah Melisa (Aunt Sallie) Sowell Stallins. At any rate, Amos left his foster household at a young age eventually settling down in Bastrop County. Amos is buried in Elgin, Tx. Pictured in 1940 , with First Wife-Sarah . A.C.'s first wife Sarah Ella died in 1909 in Bastrop County, TX. and she is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Bastrop County, TX. Obituary from Elgin Courier.

Benjamin Culp Sr. Benjamin Culp went to Dunklin Co. Mo with wife Kissiah. She died soon after 1854. Benjamin was in the 1860 census of Dunklin County, Missouri. He apparently died sometime during 1860s.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to www.davidculp.com research:

In 1837, during the great westward expansion, Henry Sr.’s eldest son, Amos B. Culp, moved his wife, Jane Davis, and their two children from central Tennessee to Edwardsville, Illinois. On December 2, 1839, Amos purchased a land patent for a large acreage of land in Brighton Township, Macoupin County, Illinois which he farmed until his death. The farm which is located just northwest of Brighton, Illinois has remained Culp property for six generations. Amos B. is said to be buried in the Davis Family Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Illinois but no one is certain because the cemetery was robbed of some stones and other stones were vandalized back in the 1970s.

Joseph Howell Hibbs

Birth: 10 Dec 1687 Byberry, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
Death: 22 Mar 1762 (aged 74) Plumsteadville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA
Burial: Burial Details Unknown. Specifically: Unknown

Memorial #: 17164383

Bio:
Born the son of English immigrant William Hibbs Jr., the progenitor of the Hibbs family line in the United States, and Joanne _______[unknown]. Joseph was likely born in Byberry Township, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Joseph's siblings, all born in Byberry Twp., Pennsylvania, to my knowledge, were Jonathon (b. unknown); Sarah (b. unknown); Phoebe (b. 1697); Jacob (b. 1699); William III (b. 1700); Jeremiah (b. unknown); and Hannah (b. unknown).

In 1714, Joseph married his first wife, Rachel _____ [surname unknown]. On Oct. 15, 1749, he married wife #2, the widower Mrs. Catherine Love.

Because Rachel was not a Quaker, Joseph was eventally expelled from the Quaker Church in 1716, two years after their marriage. A source I have states: "He returned to the Quaker Church in 1734 and apologized for his acts. He was a landowner in Byberry Township in 1723. He was a constable in Bucks County in 1728" ("Hibbs Genealogy: July 24, 1984" by Margaret Hibbs Brokaw.)

Joseph had fourteen children by Rachel, and three by Catherine:

By Rachel, all born in Byberry Twp., Bucks County, Pennsylvania Colony: Catherine (b. 1716 - married John Nyce); William (b. 1722); Sarah (b. 1724 - married John Wing); Rachel (b. 1726, became 1st wife of Robert Smith Jr.); Joseph Hibbs Jr. (b. ca. 1728, married Elizabeth Lacy, founder of the Virginia line of Hibbs, d. 1796); Hannah (b. 1729, married James Cooper 1750, grandmother of American author, James Fenimore Cooper, d. 1777); Jacob (b. 1730, perhaps twin of Phoebe); Phoebe (b. 1730, perhaps twin of Jacob, married Thomas Cooper, the brother of her sister Hannah's husband, James Cooper); John (b. 1732, left Quaker church after marriage to 'unknown' and moved to Virgina, later listed as Captain, 3rd VA Regiment Continental Army); Benjamin (b. 1734); Samuel (b. 1736); Isaac (b. 1740, m. Elizabeth Roberts); Abraham (b. 1742).
Some sources claim that Joseph and Rachel had one other son who married and had "2 or 3 children," and an "unknown male" is listed in my sources, but I have been unable to prove his birth, so I do not include him here.

By Catherine Love: Abraham (b. 1750, m. Hannah Buckman); James (b. unknown, m. Esther Williams); William (b. 1755, m. Elizabeth Booz).

Joseph spent his entire life in Bucks County, Pennsylvania Colony. He died in 1762 and is supposed to be buried in a Friends Burial Ground near Byberry Township.

Children believed to belong to Jennet Megie and Jonathan Woodruff:

1) Mary Woodruff (?-1771)
2) Daniel Woodruff (1721-?) - probable infant or childhood death
3) Jonathan Woodruff (1732-1759)
4) Jennet Woodruff (1734-1762)
5) Anne Woodruff (1736-1820)
6) Noah Woodruff (1740-1773)
7) David Woodruff (1741-1825)
8) Daniel Woodruff (1742-1812)
9) Aaron Woodruff (1746-1793)
10) Ephraim Woodruff (1750-1827)

Many private records found online claim this Jonathan Woodruff had three wives, but at least one may not be his - there was a Deacon John Woodruff (1704 - 24 Sept 1768) of the same generation who also lived in Westfield, NJ. Based on the will of Thomas Donnington, husband of Thankful Donnington, an heir named Eleanor (1712-1742), was listed as "the wife of John Woodruff".

"...if my wife and children should die without issue, then my estate is to go to Eleanor, the wife of John Woodruff."

Whether she was an older daughter or other relative of this Thomas Donnington is not clear. The children of this Eleanor Donnington and Deacon John Woodruff are listed as:

1) Cornelius Woodruff, husband of Mary Osborn

2) John Woodruff, husband of Sarah Miller

3) Moses Woodruff, husband of Phebe Marsh

This line doesn't look anything like Jonathan Woodruff, father of Aaron (1746-1793), Ephraim Woodruff (1750-1827), and their siblings unless more data becomes available. Possibly these two John Woodruffs were cousins? Deacon John Woodruff's headstone is also different from Jonathan Woodruff's, and he was also buried in Presbyterian Church Burial Grounds in Westfield, NJ along with Jennet MeGee and many other Woodruffs.

This info comes from here: http://maxpages.com/elizawoodruffs/Joseph_of_Westfield_page_1

In 1967, Ceylon Newton Woodruff and the Arthur H. Clark Company first published Woodruff Chronicles I (CNW I), following it in 1971 with Woodruff Chronicles II (CNW II). CNW was interested in tracing his own connections to John Woodruff and accumulated extensive research material on the many branches and lines of descent. This website is dedicated to providing the information in CNW's Chronicles and also includes data from other sources.

The other wife listed for Jonathan Woodruff (1706-1777) was:

Prudence Unknown, d. Oct. 31, 1781 and listed as the widow of Jonathan Woodruff.

From page 17: The most exciting news that first reached Westfield after the declaration of war was the capture of the "Blue Mountain Valley" by Lord Stirling, off Sandy Hook. This was an armed supply boat sent off from the warships in New York harbor to transport ships lying outside. The vessel was brought in to Elizabeth Port and put in charge of Col. Elias Dayton. This hazardous task was accomplished with three small boats, eighty volunteers and thirty militia. David Ross, Ephraim Marsh, Henry Baker and Jonathan Woodruff, of Westfield, went out on this enterprise. There was great rejoicing at Charles Clark's store when the prize was reported safe at harbor at 'The Port'."

Peter Cornwell (d. 1776), Brother of Charles Cornwell (d. 1781)

Peter Cornwell, another son of Dennis Cornwell, presumably was born in the 1690s
or early 1700s probably in Prince William or Stafford County, VA.6 He died prior to August
26,1776, in Fauquier County, VA, the date when his will, written on June 2,1776, was presented
for probate. In it he named his beloved wife Sarah Ann, and six children. Records
indicate that Peter was married three times, with the names of his first two wives reported in
Fauquier County, VA, court records. He first married by 1723 to Lucresse (...); second married
by 1732 to Ann (...); third married by 1750 to Sarah Ann BowUng.7 Peter had at least

4 Peter Dunkin, Sr. apparently lived in or near Westmoreland Co., VA. He is discussed in the Genealogy
of Dodson, Lucas, Etc., by S. Emmet Lucas. In addition to Ann Dunkin, Peter Dunkin, Sr. appears
to have had the following children whose identities are shown in 1694 and 1701 Westmoreland
County, VA, records: 1) Elizabeth, wife of George Harrison, 2) Ellen Dunkin (unmarried), 3)
Rebecca, wife of Thomas Kirtley, and 4) Elinor (Dunkin) Bryan, who lived in Charles County, MD,
in 1701.
5 These are abstracted in Cornwell of Virginia and England, by William Claude Gould of Pana, IL, privately
printed, 1996, pp. 38-39. One of the fifteen records is a court order in 1698 (in Westmoreland
County Order Book 1690-98) involving "Dennis Cornwell also Elizabeth Dunkin, Ann Dunkin
Cornwell and Rebecca Dunkin Kirtley."
6 Records on Peter Cornwell and his family came mostly from Gould (1996).
7 Peter Cornwell and wife "Lucresse" were listed in a Stafford Co., VA, deed dated September 8,1723.
Peter Cornwell and wife Ann were listed in a Prince William Co., VA, deed (Liber A, p. 13) dated
March 1,1732. Peter Cornwell and wife "Sarahanne" were listed in a deed, dated October 8,1750.
There is a possibility that "Ann" and "Sarah Ann" were the same person, but more likely not.

Maj R. Donnell

Revolutionary War Vet.

Born on March 22, 1724 to Andrew and Martha Caldwell, David Caldwell and his three younger brothers spent their childhood on the family farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After practicing carpentry until he was twenty-five, David was so compelled to enter seminary that he agreed to waive his right to the family inheritance if his brothers would assist with tuition for the College of New Jersey at Princeton. After graduating in 1761, he remained at Princeton long enough to receive a Presbyterian commission two years later. After becoming an ordained minister, Caldwell was tasked with organizing congregations in North Carolina. In 1766 he married Rachel Craighead, daughter of prominent minister Alexander Craighead and assumed leadership of Alamance and Buffalo congregations near modern Greensboro two years later.

In addition to religious duties, Caldwell operated a classical academy with up to sixty pupils annually. He also became a self-taught physician. His fees were inadequate to provide for his family of nine, even when supplemented with his ministerial stipend. Therefore, he turned to agriculture, where he characteristically found success.

Caldwell was crucial to North Carolina's war efforts in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. An excellent orator, he advanced the Patriot cause from the pulpit. So influential was Caldwell that, according to biographer Eli Carruthers, both of his congregations volunteered to the last able man. During the War of 1812, recruiters asked a frail Caldwell to boost patriotism among his flock. Caldwell delivered a stirring invocation, forcing recruiters to choose from droves of volunteers.

After a lifetime of dedicated service to country and community, Caldwell died on August 25, 1824, less than a year from his centennial. He is buried at Buffalo Church in Greensboro.

** Is this Anna Elizabeth Ferguson (especially the death date) being confused with Elizabeth Ferguson who married Peter Culp (John's brother) ??**
-------------------------------------------------------------------
According to www.davidculp.com research:
Had three sons and two males were living with him aged 26 and 16 in the 1800 census. His son George was also on the 1800 census as being married with children in a separate household. That leaves sons Peter and Henry. Peter is believed to have been born about 1770 and wasn't married until 1804. He was probably living with John in 1800 and listed as 26. That leaves this Henry as being 16 in 1800, making his birth year 1784 and too young to be Henry Culp Sr. who had children born in the 1790's. This information is important later because there are:

John Kolb Culp

Birth: 1750 North Carolina, USA ?? NC?
Death: 17 Apr 1809 (aged 58–59) Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 194203683
Bio:
John Culp was the Son of Hans Casper Culp and Anna Felicitas. John was married twice. The name of name of his first wife is unknown. His second wife was Anna Elizabeth. In about 1770 John Culp came to the German section of Mecklenburg County, N.C., which later in 1792 became Cabarrus County, N.C. This German Settlement was around Saint Johns Lutheran Church that is nearest to Mount Pleasant, N.C., but in present day has as the location address that of Concord, N.C. During the Revolutionary years the German community surrounding Saint Johns Lutheran Church was very much in favor of the Cause of Liberty, and John Culp is recorded as such as his name is listed as J. Culp in the North Carolina Army Account Books which is located in the North Carolina State Archives. [NOTE: The records on the American Revolution were discovered by John E. F. Misenheimer, II, Historian and Genealogist in the N.C. State Archives].

John Culp's children were: (1) George Culp, born ca. 1772, married Barbara Guthmann/Goodman, born 1777; (2) Hannah Culp; (3) Peter Culp, born 1776; (4) Henry Cup, born 1780; (5) Elizabeth Culp; (6) John Culp; (7) Unknown daughter, born ca, 1770/1775 (This daughter is not mentioned in John Culp's will when it was probated. John Culp died in 1809. The unknown daughter was the 1st wife of John Tobias Goodman. She died between 1793 to 1806, and sometime after the birth of their son, John Goodman, in 1793.)

When John Culp died in 1809, his living children by his first wife, George and Hannah, sued Peter, Henry, Elizabeth and John, children of the 2nd wife, to force them to probate John Culp's Last Will.

George Culp received a grant for 33 acres in Cabarrus County, N.C. on the waters of Buffalo Creek next to Christian Goodman's line on March 1, 1792.

John Goodman, (1793 - 1867), who was the son of Miss (Given Name Unknown) Culp and John Tobias Goodman, married Susanna Summers (1801 - 1876), the daughter of Zachariah Summers and Sarah Dawson. They lived in the Amity Hill section of Iredell County, N.C. on Withrow's Creek. Their son James A. Goodman married Lunda Margaret Goodman, a distant cousin. She was the daughter of Michael Goodman and Sarah Poutz. James and Lunda's son, James William Goodman. married Etta Corinna Little of Stanfield, Stanly County, N.C. Etta was the daughter of Daniel Ransom Little and Rebecca Pur.

In the 1500's, the Kolb's/Culp's were Anabaptists and fled Switzerland to avoid persecution for their religion. They went first to Germany, then to Holland, and then to America. In Germany, the name was Kolb. The first new generation in America Americanized the name to Culp.

Hans Casper Culp, came to America with his three brothers and Mr. Alexander Mack, a founder of the German Baptists denomination, and a group of his followers. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the ship "Allen" in 1729.

Hans Casper Culp received a warrent for land on the Great Swamo in Bucks County, Pa., in 1735. He sold this land to Ulrich Spinner in 1739. Hans Casper Culp received warrents for land in 1739 and in 1740 in "Tohickon" in Bucks County.

Hans Casper Culp was in Anson County, N.C. (that part which becane became Chester County, S.C.) where his Uncle Jonathan was living as early as 1753. In 1753, he received a warrent for 300 acres on the west side of the Catawba River adjoining his own line. In 1754, he received a grant for 987 acres of land. Records indicate that a number of "Tunkers" (German Baptist Brethern) settled in the neighborhood of Beaver Creek in 1748. The Beaver Creek Church was near Hans Casper Culp's plantaion.

Hans Casper Culp was born 1701 in Mannheim, Baden, Germany. His father was Peter Kolb, born 1671 in Wolfsheim, Pfalz, Germany.

Hans Casper Culp's wife was Anna Falicitas. Their children were: 1) Henry Culp; 2) Augustian Culp; 3) John Culp, born 1750; 4) Mary Culp; 5) Barbara Culp; 6) Margaret Culp; 7) Cathren Culp; 8) Benjamin Culp, born 1741 in Chester County, S.C.; and 9) Peter Culp.

The above information was originally published in the book titled: "The Heritage of Old Mecklenburg County North Carolina 1763-2003" in 2006. It is on page # 157, and in the article # 376 John Culp. Additionally it was submitted by: Connie Holt Rose, Manteo, N.C. The Sources Include: County Records, Census Records, and Research of Priscilla Clarke.

Message Board Post:

I'm looking for information on the John Mills and Mariam Wadlington family who came from Rutherford Co, NC to Christian Co, KY by the 1803 tax list.
Mariam was a d/o of Thomas Wadlington, who also came from Rutherford Co, NC to Christian Co, KY by the early 1800s.
John Mills was in the 1810 Christian Co, KY census and then in the 1820 Trigg Co, KY census.
I believe he had sons:
Ambrose, who married Susan Humphries.
John Jr., who married Elizabeth Malone. ********
Jesse.
and others.
I would like to contact any living descendants but would appreciate any help.
Thanks, Don
