Bio:
Josiah Stovall was born in 1749 in Henrico County or Lunenburg Co., Virginia. When he was a child, his family moved to Granville County, North Carolina. He married Mary Hicks in 1768 in Virginia. She was born on November 20, 1751 in Hanover Co., Virginia.

Josiah is listed in documents as being a Private in the Revolutionary War under the command of Colonel Richard Henderson’s Regiment in Captain James Yancey’s Company of Foot on the date of October 3, 1771. Josiah’s brothers; William, John Jr. and Drury are also in this unit.

A Farmer by trade, he moved his family to Lincoln County (was Wilkes County), Georgia in 1785 upon receipt of land as payment for military service during the American Revolution (see Miss. Rev. Soldiers, page 289-294 or Miss. Gen. Exchange, Vol. 6, page 3-5) Josiah and Mary had at least 17 children with three mentioned in his last will and testament; Polly, Drury and Charles. Later in an estate settlement in 1804, the following heirs were named; Polly (widow), Charles, David, Ralph, Josiah, William, Polly (daughter), Lewis, John, Elisha Holmes (for his wife Sally Stovall Holmes) and Charles Kennon (for his late wife Lucy Stovall Kennon) .
. His death is recorded in the Lincoln Co. GA., Book A, page 15. After Josiah’s death on November 20, 1798, his will, recorded on November 17 and probated on December 14, 1798 in Lincoln Co., Georgia, bequeath tools, Plantation, livestock, land and slaves to wife and children.

His wife, Mary moved to the area known as Spring Ridge Community near Mississippi Springs in Hinds County, Mississippi. She died there, December 12, 1845 and is buried in the Old Friendship / Stovall / Smylie Cemetery. Seven of the children moved to Alabama and Mississippi around 1811. (I have visited her grave.)

A letter written in 1845 and mailed to William T. Rattiff in Raymond, MS describes the obituary of Mary. The sum of the letter is the following; Mary died at the age of 96 on Friday, December 12th, 1845 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tatum near Jackson, MS. The widow of Josiah Stovall of Georgia for nearly 50 years and a devout member of the Baptist Church for 78 years. She raised 17 children, 10 sons and 7 daughters, of whom 6 sons and 3 daughters died before she did.

CPT Robert Alexander

Birth: 1743
Death: 1813 (aged 69–70)
Burial: Goshen Cemetery, Belmont, Gaston County, North Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 173282901
Bio:
Captain Robert Alexander, of Lincoln county, emigrated from Pennsylvania to North Carolina about 1760.
He commanded a company during the Revolution, in the Cherokee expedition, under General Rutherford; acted for several years as Commissary, and performed other minor, but important trusts for the county. He was one of the early band of patriots who met at Newborn on the 25th of August, 1774, and again attended the Convention at Hillsboro, on the 21st of August, 1775. After the war, he settled on his farm, one mile northwest of Tuckasege Ford, on the Catawba River. His residence was long a general stopping-place for travelers, and painted red—hence, it was widely known as the "Red House Place."
He was elected to the State Legislature consecutively from 1781 to 1787; and acted, for many years, as one of the magistrates of the county, showing the general acceptance with which his services were held. He died in 1813, aged about seventy years, and is buried in Goshen graveyard, Gaston county, N. C.

Capt Robert Alexander m 1st, about 1765, Mary Jack, dau/o Patrick Jack; 2nd, Margaret Reily.

His descendants by the first wife, Mary Jack, were:
1. Margaret, b. 1766, married, 1788, Judge Samuel Lowrie;
2. Annie, married, July, 20, 1785, John Sumter, (nephew of Gen. Sumter).
3. Lillis, married, Oct. 22, 1792, Capt. James Martin;
4. Robert W., married, July 16, 1800, Louisa Moore;
5. Mary J., b. 1782, married, 1st, July 21, 1803, James J. Scott, and 2nd, July 26, 1816, General John Moore;

His descendants by the second wife, Margaret Reily, were:
1. Eliza;
2. Evaline;
3. Charity Amanda, b. 1812, married, July 2, 1839, Dr. James C. Rudisill, of Lincolnton.

Birth: 1774 Wilkes County, North Carolina, USA
Death: 1866 (aged 91–92)
Burial: Mount Gilead Cemetery, Keller, Tarrant County, Texas, USA
Memorial #: 16874325

Bio:
Permelia "Milly" Lindsey Loving married Thomas Allen in 1796. She was born in 1774 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. I am a direct descendant of her husband Thomas Allen's father, Richard Allen. - information courtesy of Bob McEver.

Mr. Neace wrote of his grandmother Allen, "…many times she has recited to me the depredations upon her people by Tarleton and his men…One of her uncles named Sisk was killed at the battle of King's Mountain. Another uncle, Col. Linsy, had one of his hands cut off in a fight with Tarleton's troops. She saw the republic of America firmly established, and lived to see the same country convulsed with one of the greatest civil wars of modern times, and died in 1866 at the ripe age of 96 years…" She lies buried at Mount Gilead.

GARRETT, JACOB (1776-ca. 1842). Jacob Garrett, early settler and political figure, was born in Tennessee in 1776 and moved to Texas from Arkansas in 1824. He was a representative to the conventions of 1832 and 1833 from the Ayish Bayou District. He was one of the commissioners to raise troops in October 1835 and was appointed agent to collect money in the hands of officials due the Mexican government and to contract loans in the name of the General Council for the use of Texans. Garrett introduced to the council the last resolution for peace with Mexico. He died in Hot Springs, Arkansas, about 1842 and was buried there.

_____________________________________________________
When I arrived in Texas in 1824 I found [it] so sparsely settled that there was no regulations in any legal form. As we had no knowledge of the Mexican laws we were a law unto ourselves. But as the country became more thickly settled it became manifest that there must be some rule to collect debts and punish crimes. The people agreed to elect a man whom they called an Alcalde and a Sheriff to execute his orders. The Alcalde's power extended to all cases civil and criminal without any regard to the amount in controversy. Murder, thefts, and all other cases came under his jurisdiction except divorces, and as the old Texas men and women were always true and loyal to each other, divorce cases was never heard of. The Alcalde had the power in all cases to call to his assistance twelve good and lawful citizens to his aid when he deemed it necessary or the parties required it, and the decision of the Alcalde and 12 men was final from which no appeal could be taken, and there was as much justice done then as there is now and not half so much grumbling. The first Alcalde was Baily Anderson, the next was John Sprowl. In 1830 Jacob Garrett was Alcalde, 1831 Elisha Roberts, 1832 Benjamin Lindsey, 1833 William McFarland, in 1834 Charles Taylor was Alcalde. I served as Sheriff under Roberts, Lindsey, McFarland and Taylor, but the year of thirty five called me to the tented field in defense of my country.

George D Davidson

Birth: Jan. 5, 1768
Burke County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Aug. 26, 1837
Pontotoc County
Mississippi, USA

George D. Davidson was born on January 5, 1768 in Burke County, North Carolina to Major William and Margaret (McConnell) Davidson. He married Sarah McWhorter. They were the parents of seven children: Sarah, Hanceford, Alney, John P., Margaret M., George H., and Fidelus. It is likely that the 4 other children buried in the family cemetery are George and Sarah's children also - Dovey (died at age 5); Ruth (died at age 17); Ben J. (died at age 11); and William (died at 27). George D. died on Aug. 26, 1837 of milk fever, an illness which took several family members including his wife.

The family had moved from North Carolina to Franklin County in the early 1800's and later to Mississippi to raise cotton.

A letter from R.B. Davidson to his cousin Allen Davidson relates the family's tragedy after moving from Tennessee to Mississippi:

"Dec 18th 1892, Tennessee

My Dear Cousin Allen,

Did you know that we had an Uncle named George Davidson? He moved to Tennessee at the early part of this century, bringing his family from N.C. and settled in Franklin County. His wife's name was Sally McWhorter. After he had become old he moved to the State of Mississippi to cultivate cotton. Of the marriage there were sons Hance, Pinkney, Alney, George and Lawson and daughters Sally and Margaret. Sally first married Woods, by whom she had a son named Davidson who moved to Texas. I remember writing a letter to him in 1842 and Sally's husband having died; she married a second husband who lived in Alabama a little south of the Tennessee River. This husbands name was Holland, and I remember that my brother Sam & I enjoyed their hospitality from Saturday p.m. till Monday a.m. in Jan. 1838.

Margaret, the second daughter married John Hutton, a Dutchman who settled in this (Bedford) County prior to the removal of our Uncle George and his family to Mississippi.

Now came from Mississippi news of a scourge that swept nearly the whole family into their graves, except Hance and George. That is the parents of the family, and sons Pinkney, Alney and Lawson, all died suddenly of milk sickness. John Hutton hearing of the scourge in the family hurried off to Mississippi and suddenly dies of the same sickness...

I cease to write lest I weary you with much reading.

Kind regards to all my Kindred, Yours truly, R.B. Davidson"

MALONE AND ALLIED FAMILIES
By Dr. Randolph A. Malone
Page 13

William Malone, Sr. 3-1 (d. 1745 Surrey Co, VA) Lived in Southwark Parish north of the
Nottaway River along Southwester Swamp in Surry County very close to the Prince George County border and was already a landowner in 1718. He lived near Nathaniel Malone and adjacent to Christopher and Nathaniel Robertson, and also shows close ties to the Wynne family, as did Nathaniel. Robert Wynne witnessed both their wills.He deeded adjacent land to his sons and left his will in Surry County, proved in 1745.

Page 22
William Malone 3-1 was a Surry Co. land owner at least by 6-18-1718 when John Roberts deeded land to William Moor(e) on the north side of Nottoway River adjacent to William Malone. How long he had owned this land is not known. He had received an additional land grant by 9-5-1720 which was situated on the north side of the Nottoway River and bounded by the southeast side of Southwest Swamp, as described in a 1745 deed from his son John Malone 4-3 to his other son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 at William Malone Sr. 3-1 's. death. This may have been the same land which records show was actually patented to William Malone, Sr. on 9-5-1723, described in the Patent Book as being 195 acres on the north side of Nottaway River, beginning on the south side of Southwestern Swamp. On 3-17-1722 William 3-1 , with his wife Ann, deeded 100 acres on the north side of Nottoway River to William Moor(e).

It is important to note that all of the land dealings of William Malone 3-1 and his son William Malone 4-1 were described as being on the north side of Nottoway River, and/or adjacent to Southwest(er) Swamp, the Robertson family, and the other related neighbors. When one examines these records as a group and compares them with the records of William Malone 4-11, it is a relatively simple matter to distinguish between the two William Malones and their sons of the same name who lived in Surry/Sussex and Prince George/Dinwiddie Counties during this time period.

William Malone, Sr. 3-l's son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 owned land in the immediate Nottoway River and Southwest Swamp area as early as 1727, which abutted the property of Nathaniel Robertson. It is probable this had been also part of William Malone Sr.'s patent, because another deed in 1739 describes the land as being on the north side of Nottoway River and bounded by Southwest Swamp and William Malone. In addition, William Malone, Sr.'s land left by his will to son William, Jr. is described as joining Nathaniel Robertson's property also. On 3-20-1738 William Malone, Sr. deeded 100 acres to his son John Malone, which. was part of the land he was patented in 1723. Again, this was land which he owned on the south side of Southwest(er) Swamp.

Although these families of Malones and those living adjacent were all in a relatively small area and could have been called "neighbors", nowhere is William Malone, Sr. 3-1's, or William Malone, Jr.4-1 's property described as being on or adjacent to Stony River, as was the younger William Malone 4-11 who married Ann Booth. At the same time, the younger William Malone 4-11 (whose wife was Ann Booth) is never described as owning property on Nottoway River and Southwest Swamp, but he and his children are consistently shown as owners of Stony River property at the county line , and neighbors of George Booth , whose daughter this younger William Malone married. It is because of the consistency of these records that we realize that the William Malone who married Ann Booth is he who owned land on Stony River, was living adjacent to George Booth, (father of Ann Booth Malone), and was the son of Nathaniel Malone 3-3.

The 1736 will (probated 1745) of William Malone 3-1 left his property to his two sons William Malone, Jr. 4-1 and John Malone 4-3. To William, Jr. 4-1 he left 97 and one half acres "along a line of marked trees to Southwest Swamp thence up the said swamp to Nathaniel Robertsons deceased line ... " The other half of his property he left to son John, land "along the line that divides my son William and my son John to Southwest Swamp , thence down the said swamp to a beach tree ..." Bibliography of records concerning William Malone 3-1. Bibliography of records for William Malone 4-1, (who married Mary Hill, son of William Malone 2-1, indicating continuation of same property holdings. If one examines these records as well as those for William Malone 4-11 above, the problem is clarified.

Page 38
William Malone 3-1 (c 1670/1685 VA - 1745 Surry Co., VA), was probably a brother of Nathaniel Malone, Sr. 3-3 and possibly a son of Daniel Malone 2-1 and possible grandson of Daniel Malone 1-1 . William 3-1 married Anne ----· [135] In the first edition of this book your author... believed him to be a son of Nathaniel Malone 3-3. This is now proven to be
incorrect. The reader is referred to the chapter "The Two William Malones" for a detailed and documented explanation which will not be repeated here.

William Malone, Sr. 3-1 was born about 1675 - 1685, and was a contemporary of
Nathaniel Malone 3-3 . His birth date is suggested by the fact that his son William, Jr.
4-1 was old enough to be a land and patent owner by 1727, with a birth date by about 1705/6. [138b] William, Sr. 3-1 lived in the frontier parish of Southwark in the corner of Surry County near the Prince George County Line. The only parishes in Surry Co. at that time were Southwark and Lyons Creek. When Surry County was divided in 1752 this portion became Sussex County and Albemarle Parish. Fortunately, Surry and Sussex County records survived, as well as some Albemarle Parish records. Thus William Malone 3-1 and his childrens' records are available for study.

William Malone 3-1 was a Surry Co. land owner at least by 6-18-1718 when John Roberts deeded land to William Moor(e) on the north side of Nottoway River adjacent to William Malone. [130b] How long he had owned this land is not known. He had received an
additional land grant by 9-5-1720 which was situated on the north side of the Nottoway River and bounded by the southeast side of Southwest Swamp, as described in a 1745 deed from his son John Malone 4-3 to his other son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 at William Malone Sr. 3-1 's. death. [148c] This may have been the same land which records show was actually patented to William Malone, Sr. on 9-5-1723, described in the Patent Book as being 195 acres on the north side of Nottaway River, beginning on the south side of Southwestern Swamp. [136] On 3-17-1722 William 3-1, with his wife Ann, deeded 100 acres on the north side of Nottoway River to William Moor(e). [135] On 2-18-1722 Christopher Robertson was granted 80 acres of land on the north side of Nottoway River, on William Malone's corner. [134] Christopher (dec'd by 2-19-1727) [138b] was the father of Nathaniel Robertson, [138b] and a contemporary of William Malone 3-1. It was Nathaniel's son Drury Robertson who married Winifred Malone 5-24, daughter of William Malone 4-11 and his wife Ann (Booth) Malone. (See the "William Malone 4-1 1" Chapter.) It was Nathaniel Robertson's younger son Nathaniel who married Winifred Malone 5-10, granddaughter of William Malone 3-1 and daughter of William Malone 4-1. [165c, 161a, 1 54, 21b pp 64-67] Because of the close association of William Malone 3-1 with Christopher and Nathaniel Robertson, many researchers have felt that his wife was probably Ann(e) Robertson, though the author knows of no documentary proof of this assertion.

It is important to note that all of the land dealings of William Malone 3-1 and his son William Malone 4-1 were described as being on the north side of Nottoway River, and/or adjacent to Southwest(er) Swamp, the Robertson family, and the other related neighbors. This differentiates William Malone 3-1 and his son William Malone 4- l (who married Mary Hill) from William Malone 4- 11 (who married Ann Booth) and was the son of Nathaniel Malone 3-3.

William Malone, Sr. 3-1 's son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 owned land in the immediate Nottoway River and Southwest(er) Swamp area as early as 1727, which abutted the
property of Nathaniel Robertson. [138b] It is probable this had been also part of William Malone Sr.'s patent, because another deed in 1739 describes the land as being on the north side of Nottoway River and bounded by Southwest Swamp and William Malone.[145b] In addition, William Malone, Sr.'s land left by his will to son William, Jr. is described as joining Nathaniel Robertson's property also. [148b] On 3-20-1738 William Malone, Sr. deeded 100 acres to his son John Malone 4-3, which was part of the land he was patented in 1723. [144] Again, this was land which he owned on the south side of Southwest(er) Swamp.

On 5-3-1736 William Malone, Sr. wrote his will, which was probated on 10-16-1745. [148b] In it, he left his property to his two sons William Malone, Jr. 4-1 and John Malone 4-3 . To William, Jr. 4-1 he left 97 and one half acres "along a line of marked trees to Southwest Swamp thence up the said swamp to Nathaniel Robertsons deceased line ... " The other half of his property he left to son John, land "along the line that divides my son William and my son John to Southwest Swamp, thence down the said swamp to a beach tree ... " [148b]

The will is as follows:
Surry County Will Book 9, p 5 10 , Will of William Malone of Southwalk Parish dated 5-3-
1736, proved, 10-16-1745:

In the name of God , Amen , I William Malone of Southwark Parish in the County of Surry in the Colony of Virginia being weak in body but of sound Perfect and disposing mind and memory praise be therefore given to almighty God and calling to Remembrance the uncertain State of this transitory Life, and that all flesh must yeald unto Death, when it Shall please God to Call, Do make & ordain this my last Will and testament, hereafter Revoking all other Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made.

Item: I devise to my loving son John and his heirs forever the plantation that I now live on
and the land that belong to it which is Ninety Seven and a half Acres Beginning at the said

Item: I devise unto my loving wife Anne all the rest of my estate... making her my hole and sole executrix of this my last will and testament.

In witness my hand and seal this third day of May 1736. William Malone (his mark).
Witness: Robert Wynne , Thomas Wynne. Copied from microfilm of the original will by the author. Also abstracted [125a p 37].

At the same time William Sr.'s will was being probated, his son John Malone 4-3 and wife Elizabeth "of Bath Parish in Prince George Co." made a deed of "lease and release" of his inherited land to his brother, William Malone, Jr. [148c] The most likely reason for this deed is that John Malone 4-3 was living in Prince George Co.(Dinwiddie Co. in 1752). He is shown moving in 1764 to land deeded him in Granville Co, NC, which later became Bute/Warren Co. Many researchers have believed that the Rev.War soldier John Malone (c 1734-1797), who married Mary, was the son of Willlam Malone, Sr., (this author included), but the above deed shows not only that William Malone 3-l's son John had a wife named Elizabeth, but that he also resided out of Surry Co in Bath Parish, Prince George County. He was also too old to likely be a Rev. War soldier, since he was a land owner in 1738. He would have been 60 or more years old during the time of the revolution.
We note that the witnesses of William Malone 3-l's will were Robert Wynne and Thomas Wynne, indicating a close association of William Malone 3-1 with the Wynnes as well as his probable brother Nathaniel Malone 3-3, who married the daughter of Thomas Wynne. Robert Wynne, son of Thomas Wynne, was a witness at both of their wills. The inventory of William's estate was made and received 10-12-1745 with Anne Malone as executrix.His

There is a Caleb Garrett listed in this census. It is believed that Caleb Garrett listed in the 1830 census of Williamson Co, TN is this subject; however, this raises the question as to the identity of Caleb Garrett in the 1830 census of Wayne Co, TN.

(Additional research is required, because Caleb's brother George W. Garrett was also listed in the 1830 Wayne Co, TN census.)

Mrs. Elizabeth Garrett d. on Thursday the 16th, age 29 yrs. 19 days, wife of C. Garrett. (This is the 2nd wife, Elizabeth Hambleton, and if the age of 29 years, 19 days is correct, her date of birth was 4-27-1804.)

She is buried in the Garrett Cemetery. The cemetery location is reported by Mrs. Joe Bowman as being in the 5th District, in the yard to the right of old Sandy Brown house on old Charlotte Road; now owned by Samuel Sweeney. There is only one marked stone and part of the name on the stone is missing.

Cottonwood

"An old cemetery in the side yard contains the remnants of one tombstone. Although the name is broken and the dates faded, one line declares the stone to be in memory of the consort of Caleb Garrett, a prominent citizen in Franklin in the 1820s."

From newspaper, Tennessean:

Williamson County, Tennessee - Slow down at mile 3.7 and check out the historic home on the right called Cottonwood or Hamilton Place, but also known as Caleb's Consort. The home reportedly was built in 1800, making it one of the oldest in this area. It derives its latter name from one grave in a nearby graveyard that reads to the memory of the "consort of Caleb Garrett," a prominent citizen in the early 1800s.

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)

Jacob Graves (2) was born 1 Jan. 1783 in North Carolina (or possibly SC), died 9 March 1875 in Tippah Co., MS, and was buried in Shelby Creek Cem., on the Tippah Co.-Benton Co. line. He was a farmer and lived in Saulsbury, Tippah Co. He was in the 1840 Hardeman Co., TN census, and in Tippah Co. in 1860 and 1870. His full name may have been Jacob Thomas Graves.

He moved through TN and arrived in Tippah Co., MS in 1854. He bought land from Zadock Brewer and John Hopkins in 1858.

In the Tippah Co. Courthouse, Ripley, MS, is a probate packet titled "Thomas Graves, Dec.", but all papers included in it refer to Jacob Graves, Dec. An original document in it states: "Graves, Jacob (PR480), original bill 12 Sept. 1879. Jacob Graves of Benton Co. died 1876, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and the following heirs: (a) W. C. Graves, a son, (b) J. E. Graves, a son, (c) F. M. Graves, a son, (d) H. L. Jacob first married Peggy Johnson probably about 1806. He married second Mary Counce (or Counts), daughter of John Counts, about 1821 (or 1824[1]). He married Elizabeth Brumley on 24 Jan. 1843. She was his third wife. She was born 1 Jan. 1806 in TN, died 27 Aug. 1884 in Tippah Co., and was buried in Shelby Creek Cem.

At the time of the 1820 Franklin Co., TN census, Jacob Graves was a widower with 7 children. (R-2, R-7, R-8, R-9, R-10, R-11)

War of 1812 Service (Including the Battle of New Orleans):

George W. Garrett was a private in Colonel Metcalf's 1st Regiment West Tennessee Militia in the brigade under Major General William Carroll. The regimental captains under whom George W. Garrett served were Lewis Dillahunty and Daniel M. Bradford. (Under Captain Bradford during the Battle of New Orleans.)

COLONEL WILLIAM METCALF

DESIGNATION: 1st Regiment West Tennessee Militia
DATES: November 1814 - May 1815
MEN MOSTLY FROM: Davidson, Bedford, Franklin, Lincoln, Maury, Warren, and Giles Counties
CAPTAINS: John Barnhart, Daniel M. Bradford, Barbe Collins, John Cunningham, Lewis Dillahunty, Alexander Hill, Bird S. Hurt, John Jackson, Thomas Marks, William Mullen, Andrew Patterson, William Sitton, Obadiah Waller.

Colonel Metcalf's 1st Regiment West Tennessee Militia was part of General Carroll's brigade at New Orleans. The regiment comprised the right section of Carroll's line at the breastworks at Chalmette. Muster rolls show casualties in the engagements of December 1814 and January 1815. Captain Daniel Bradford led the elite corps known as "Carroll's Life Guard." The division reached New Orleans on December 21, 1814 after an excursion down the Mississippi River.

George W. Garrett enlisted at Camp Flynns in Jackson Co, TN on November 13, 1814; fought in the Battle of New Orleans Dec 1814/Jan 1815; and mustered out at Nashville on May 13, 1815. Pay per month, 10 dollars, total amount of pay 60 dollars. (See Battle of New Orleans below.)

George's younger brother, Caleb Garrett (b. 1795 VA) served in the same militia unit in the Battle of New Orleans.
______________________________________________________________________
Other Military Service:

Records show that George W. Garrett and brother Caleb Garrett also served in Cocke's 2nd Regiment West Tennessee Militia; both had prior service in late 1813 and early 1814 in engagements under General Andrew Jackson to suppress Creek Indian uprisings in Georgia and Alabama Territory. See The Battle of Horseshoe Bend below for one of the engagements of this campaign. They also served in the Tennessee militia during 1815 and 1816.
______________________________________________________________________
The Battle of Horseshoe Bend

In March 1814, General Jackson's army left Fort Williams on the Coosa, cut a 52-mile trail through the forest in three days, and on the 26th made camp six miles north of Horseshoe Bend. The next morning, Jackson sent General John Coffee and 700 mounted infantry and 600 Cherokee and Lower Creek allies three miles down-stream to cross the Tallapoosa and surround the bend. He took the rest of the army - about 2000 men, consisting of East and West Tennessee militia and the Thirty-ninth U.S. Infantry - into the peninsula and at 10:30 a.m. began an ineffectual two-hour artillery bombardment of the Red Sticks' log barricade. At noon, some of Coffee's Cherokees crossed the river and assaulted the Red Sticks from the rear. Jackson quickly ordered a frontal bayonet charge, which poured over the barricade. Fighting ranged over the south end of the peninsula throughout the afternoon. By dark at least 800 of Chief Menawa's 1,000 Red Sticks were dead (557 slain on the field and 200-300 in the river). Menawa himself, although severely wounded, managed to escape. Jackson's losses in the battle were 49 killed and 154 wounded, many mortally.

Though the Red Sticks had been crushed at Tohopeka, the remnants of the hostile Creeks held out for several months. In August 1814, exhausted and starving, they surrendered to Jackson at Wetumpka, near the present city of Montgomery, Alabama. The Treaty of Fort Jackson ending the conflict required the Creeks to cede some 20 million acres of land - more than half of their ancestral territorial holdings - to the United States. The state of Alabama was carved out of this domain and admitted to the Union in 1819.

Name Date Serial# Chap. & Sect. Description
Garrett, George 1819 23 46.1 Hickman County - Vernon commissioner

Information on Vernon, Tennessee:
(Internet: http://www.hickmanco.com)

In 1807, Hickman County extended all the way to the present Alabama state line, and Vernon, on the Piney River, became the first county seat. By 1820 several new counties had been created out of Hickman County, and a movement began to move the county seat to a more central location. In 1823, the new town of Centerville became the county seat. As a result of the bitterness over the change, the old log courthouse at Vernon was dismantled at night and hauled to Centerville, along with the court records. (Vernon was located on the Piney River, just west of the present-day town of Nunnelly.)

History of Wayne County, Tennessee:

The first settlers of Wayne County were mainly from the older counties of Middle Tennessee and from North and South Carolina. The early settlements were made on North Carolina military grants, occupants' claims and warrants. The first settlement was made by Frederick Meredith, Mark F. Edwards, William Henton, Lovick Rasbury, Richard Churchwell and Craig W. Pope, on Buffalo River in 1815. On Hardin Creek were Isaac G. Grimes, Henry Grimes, Peter Renfrow and John Johnson, in 1816. Thomas G. Harvey, Charles Burns, James Reeves, Samuel Loggans and William Scott settled on Green River in 1816 and 1817. On Indian Creek Henry and John Rayburn, Jesse and Baker Cypert, Benjamin and David Schull settled in 1818. James Surrett settled on the east fork of Hardin Creek in 1819. David Gallaher and John Dixon settled on Shoal Creek in 1818. William B. Payne, William B. Walker, Joseph Staggs, Nathan Biffle and Isaac Robertson settled on Forty-eight Mile Creek in 1818. Other settlers in different parts of the county before 1820 were Jacob Biffle in the Eight District, where land was entered in 1812; David Carter, assignee of Elizabeth Walker, also in the Eighth District; also William B. Ross, Joseph Denton, Wiley Harrington, Thomas Reeves, J. W. Nunley, T. Gambel, Daniel Cherry, Jacob Fraley, J. R. Russell, John Gibson and J. P. Walker. John Watson settled on Hardin Creek in 1820, and Lewis Johnson and Henry Colston on Beech Creek about the same time. The following entered lands before 1820: Michael Robertson, Henson Grove, Mark F. Edwards, Isaac Rice, William Williams, Thomas G. Harvey, James H. Gambel, Alexander Steele, James R. Russell, Daniel Voorhees, Samuel Mayfield, John Meredith, John Duke, R. P. Scoot, John McCulley, David Carter, John Welch, Allen Brown, James Davis, James Collins, John Mitchell, G. W. Garrett, R. C. Harris. John Akin, S. Read, J. L. Smith, James Davis, James Elliot, John Brown, James Staggs, W. B. and James P. Walker, Jesse Thompson and the Morris family. The first water and tub-mills in county were build on Moccasin Creek, in 1818, by John Meredith; the first horse-mill was built by John O. Roberts, on Beech Creek, in 1820. The first cotton-gin was built near where old Carrollville stood, by William B. Ross, in 1819. The first ferry across the Tennessee River, within the limits of the county, was established in 1818 at Carrollville, but the owner of the ferry is unknown.

1836/1837 move to Tippah Co, MS:

Early in the 19th century, Native Americans inhabited most of north Mississippi. This changed on February 9, 1836 with the Chickasaw Indian Cession, a treaty that instigated the removal of most of the Indians in north Mississippi. Soon after, settlers began pouring into this area of Mississippi, mostly from other parts of the South.

There were twelve counties formed in north Mississippi with the opening of the Chickasaw Indian Cession lands in 1836. George W. Garrett was living in Wayne Co, TN in early 1836, but it is believed that he moved to Tippah Co, MS later in 1836 or in early 1837. (Tippah County was one of the twelve counties formed in north Mississippi.)

Battle of New Orleans:

On Nov 1814 Major General William Carroll called for volunteers to defend New Orleans against an expected attack by the British. Colonel William Metcalf formed the 1st Regiment West Tennessee Militia. [George and Caleb Garrett were originally in Captain Lewis Dillahunty's company of this regiment; but later in Captain Daniel Bradford's company. They were mustered into service on Nov 15, 1814 at Camp Flynns, Jackson County, Tennessee.] On Nov 21 they left Nashville by boat, and arrived in Clarksville on Nov 24. They made a fairly fast trip to New Orleans for they were at the mouth of the Cumberland River on Dec 1, at Natchez on Dec 14, and finally landed on Dec 20, 1814 about four miles above New Orleans. They had traveled 1,300 miles by boat in about 30 days. There they made camp, cleaned weapons, mended clothing, and drilled by company. When they arrived in New Orleans the Tennessee Militia did not make a very good impression on the people of New Orleans with their clothing, etc.

"Their appearance was not very military. In their woolen hunting shirts and copperas (greenish color) dyed pantaloons, with slouched hats made from the skins of raccoons or foxes; with belts of untanned deerskin in which were stuck their hunting knives and tomahawks; with their long unkempt hair and unshorn faces .... but were admirable soldiers, remarkable for endurance and possessing that admirable quality in soldiers of being able to take care of themselves."

Another eyewitness wrote of Carroll's Tennessee Militiamen: "These men carried nothing but their carouch-boxes and powder horns; their bullets were usually in their pantaloons pockets; they had no idea whatever of military order and discipline; they paid attention only to the more important part of their calling, which, according to their notions, was quietly to pick out their man, fix him in their aim, and bring him down. After the British had landed about 8 miles below New Orleans, Gen. Jackson on Dec 23 ordered Gen. Carroll and his Tennesseans into New Orleans, and to be ready to move at a moments notice. During Jackson's night attack of the 23rd against the British, Gen. Carroll's Tennesseans did not take part. On the 24th Jackson put his troops in a defensive position along Rodriquez Canal several miles below New Orleans. The canal extended from the Mississippi River for 900 yards to a swamp. Carroll's men were moved on the 26th to the left center of the line, and they covered the area to the swamp. There they worked without stopping on the breastworks of the lines. In order to discover the nature of Jackson's defenses, the British made a small attack on the 28th. The British thought that the area next to the swamp was the weakest, but Carroll's Tennesseans were able to stop the attack. There they lived until the battle on the 8th of Jan.

"Unshaven, dirty, they lived for over seven days waist-deep in mud, chilled by the intermittent rains, surrounded by the stench of the decaying marshlands, threatened by lurking danger in the shadows of the cypress trees. Yet they had one complaint: If we could only see the redcoats within fair buck range."

But at night they came into their own, as Latour states: "The Tennesseans, on account of their well-known skill at the rifle, were the terror of the British sentinels and advanced posts. Their uniform consisted of a brown hunting shirt, ('because of this the British called them dirty shirts'), which rendered it difficult to perceive them among the underwood and dry grass through which they approached to shoot down the British sentinels, whom they never missed. Finally when dawn of 8th of Jan arrived, the Tennesseans discovered the enemy occupying the space between the woods and the Mississippi. The British having perceived that the left part of Jackson's line was weak, Carroll's Tennesseans would bear the brunt of the attack. On their first charge the British were met by a withering volley from Carroll's men, and the British took to their heels and fled. Then Carroll's men were attacked by Scottish Highlanders. Again the Tennesseans showed no respect for their enemy and opened a murderous fire upon the Highlanders. "The whole line from Carroll's Tennesseans to the swamp was almost one solid blaze. Four men deep, the ranks of the Tennesseans never stopped for breath. As fast as one man fired he stepped back for the next to take his place. By the time the fourth line had discharged its rifles, the first was taking aim again. There were barely fifteen hundred rifles in the line yet scarcely a rifle failed to find its mark. The redcoats fell like blades of grass beneath the scythe." a British officer recorded.

THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS
From "Harper's New Monthly Magazine"
No. CXVI January, 1860 Vol. XX.

A BALLAD OF LOUISIANA
BY THOMAS DUNN ENGLISH

Here, in my rude log-cabin,
Few poorer men there be
Among the mountain ranges
Of western Tennessee.
My limbs are weak and shrunken,
White hairs upon my brow;
My dog lie still, old fellow!
My sole companion now;
Yet I, when young and lusty,
Have gone through stirring scenes,
For I went down with Carroll,
To fight at New Orleans.

You say you'd like to hear me
The stirring story tell
Of those who stood the battle
And those who fighting fell.
Short work to count our losses;
We stood and dropped the foe,
As easily as by fire-light
Men shoot a buck or doe;
And while they fell by hundreds
Upon the bloody plain,
Of us fourteen were wounded,
And only eight were slain.

The eighth of January,
Before the break of day,
Our raw and hasty levies
Were brought into array,
No cotton-bales before us ---
Some fool that falsehood told ---
Before us was an earth-work,
Built from the swampy mould;
And there we stood in silence,
And waited with a frown,
To greet with bloody welcome
The bull-dogs of the crown.

The heavy fog of morning
Still hid the plain from sight,
When came a thread of scarlet,
Marked faintly in the white.
We fired a single cannon,
And as its thunder rolled,
The mist before us lifted
In many a heavy fold.
The mist before us lifted,
And, in their bravery fine,
Came rushing to their ruin,
The fearless British line.

Then from our waiting cannons
Leaped forth the deadly flame,
To meet the solid columns
That swift and steady came.
The thirty-twos of Crawley,
And Bluche's twenty-four,
To Spotte's eighteen-pounders
Responded with a roar ---
Sending the grape-shot deadly
That marked its pathway plain,
And paved the road it traveled
With corses of the slain.

Our rifles firmly grasping
And heedless of the din,
We stood in silence waiting
For orders to begin.
Our fingers on the triggers,
Our hearts with anger stirred,
Grew still more fierce and eager
As Jackson's voice we heard ---
"Stand steady! Waste no powder!
Wait till your shots will tell!
To-day the work you finish;
See that you do it well!"

Their columns drawing nearer
We felt our patience tire,
When came the voice of Carroll,
Distant and measured --- "Fire!"
Oh! then you should have marked us
Our volleys on them pour,
Have heard our joyous rifles
Ring sharply through the roar;
And seen their foremost columns
Melt hastily away,
As snow in mountain gorges
Before the floods of May.

They soon re-formed their columns
And, mid the fatal rain
We never ceased to hurtle,
Came to their work again.
The Forty-fourth is with them,
That first its laurels won
With stout old Abercrombie
Beneath an Eastern sun.
It rushes to the battle,
And though within the rear
Its leader is a laggard,
It shows no sign of fear.

It did not need its colonel,
For soon there came instead
An eagle-eyed commander,
And on its march he led.
'Twas Packenham in person,
The leader of the field;
I knew it by the cheering
That loudly round him pealed.
And by his quick, sharp movement
We felt his heart was stirred,
As when at Salamanca
He led the fighting Third.

I raised my rifle quickly,
I sighted at his breast ---
God save the gallant leader,
And take him to his rest!
I did not draw the trigger,
I could not for my life;
So calm he set his charger
Amid the deadly strife,
That, is my fiercest moment,
A prayer arose from me ---
"God save that gallant leader,
Our foeman though he be!"

Sir Edward's charger staggers,
He leaps at once to ground,
And, ere the brute falls bleeding,
Another horse has found.
His right arm falls! 'tis wounded!
He waves on high his left;
In vain he leads the movement;
The ranks in twain are cleft.
The men in scarlet waver
Before the men in brown;
And fly in utter panic
The soldiers of the crown.

I thought the work was over,
But newer shouts were heard;
And came with Gibbs to lead it,
The gallant Ninety-third.
Then Packenham exulting,
With proud and joyous glance,
Cried, "Children of the Tartan!
Bold Highlanders advance!
Advance to scale the breast-works,
And drive them from their hold,
And show the stainless courage
That marked your sires of old!"

His voice as yet was ringing,
When quick as light there came
The roaring of a cannon,
And the earth seemed all aflame.
Who causes thus the thunder
The doom of men to speak?
It is the Baratarian ---
The fearless Dominique!
Down through the marshaled Scotsmen
The step of death is heard,
As by the fierce toronado
Falls half the Ninety-third.

The smoke passed slowly upward,
And as it soared on high
I saw the brave commander
In dying anguish lie
They bear him from the battle,
Who never fled the foe;
Unmoved by death around them,
His bearers softly go.
In vain their care so gentle ---
Fades earth and all its scenes;
The Man of Salamanca
Lies dead at New Orleans.

But where were his lieutenants?
Had they in terror fled?
No! Keane was sorely wounded,
And Gibbs was good as dead.
Brave Wilkinson commanding,
A Major of Brigade,
The shattered force to rally
A final effort made.
He led it up our ramparts ---
Small glory did he gain;
Our captives some, while others fled,
And he himself was slain.

The stormers had retreated,
The bloody work was o'er;
The feet of the invaders
Were soon to leave our shore.
We rested on our rifles,
And talked about the fight,
When ran a sudden murmur
Like fire from left to right.
We turned and saw our chieftain,
And then, good friend of mine.
You should have heard the cheering
That rang along the line.

For well our men remembered
How little when they came,
Had they but native courage,
And trust in Jackson's name;
How through the day he labored,
How kept the vigils still,
Till discipline controlled us,
A stronger power than will;
And how he hurled us at them,
Within the evening hour,
That red night in December,
And made us feel our power.

In answer to our shouting,
Fire lit his eyes of gray;
Erect, but thin and pallid,
He passed upon his bay.
Weak from the baffled fever,
And shrunken in each limb,
The swamps of Alabama
Had done their work on him;
But spite of that and fasting,
And hours of sleepless care,
The soul of Andrew Jackson
Shone forth in glory there.

I'm confused...I need help

Many people have posted and stated that Timothy and Ann Jenkins Sisk
married in Wilkes Co., NC, moved to SC then to Hopkins Co., KY...and
died there.

There is much confusion about early Sisk line.---Timothy--and there were
several of them--being part of the confusion.. I'm not convinced Timothy Sisk who died in
Kentucky was the Timothy Sisk who married Anney Jenkins.

There is a will in Hopkins County, KY, Will Book 4, pages 29-31 for Timothy
Sisk...The will is dated December 17, 1835 and states: To wife Mary E.
Sisk, to daughters, Elizabeth, Alice and Polly. To son, Andrew, mentions
unborn child, also that of Milton (A son?) have no part of estates.

Witnesses were Asa and Hiram Kirkwood.
Proven in April County Court, 1837.

I believe Mary E. Sisk is Mary Savage Givens Sisk but don't know that for sure.

Look at this website:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyhopkin/hcgs/tuckaways/will-bk4.html

Further, I believe the following to be true:
Timothy Sisk, husband of Anney Jenkins, applied for a Revolutionary War
Pension. This application was applied for through the court system in
Culpeper County, Virginia on the 13th of August 1832...where Timothy
personally appeared. He got his pension and it was retroactive to March 4,
1831...He got 40 bucks in arrearages and a $10 semi-annual payment on 4 Sep
1833. At the time he applied, Timothy was 70 years old...birthdate of abt 1761.

Annie Jenkins Sisk applied for a Widow's pension on Nov 23, 1838 when she was 76... On Feb 25, 1839 she was granted that pension retroactive to March 4 1836...which means Timothy had to have died prior to March 4 1836. Timothy's date of death of Sept 2, 1835 is mentioned. Annie was living in
Rappahannock County, VA when she applied. She evidently was in failing health and the Clerk of the Court of Rappahannock County went to her home, rather than she coming to Court. Rappahannock was formed from Culpeper County in 1832.

So, if Timothy was in Culpeper Co, VA when he applied in August of 1832 and
during that year where he and Annie lived actually became a part of
Rapphannock Co...it makes sense that Annie was in Rapphannock when she
applied in 1838. They were in their 70's, I find it hard to believe they
would have left Virginia and went to Kentucky at that age.

Is there proof that Timothy W. Sisk bn 1810 Hopkins Co Kentucky is
the son of Timothy and Anney Jenkins Sisk?

Please help...you may email me at primitivebynature@... if you
like.

Searching for the parents of Timothy W. Sisk, born in 1810 in Kentucky, married lst Louisa Miller in 1831, had daughter Louisa Sisk, married 2nd to Nancy Hunter (believed to be the daughter of David Hunter) in 1835 had daughter Dorinda Adelaide Sisk in 1836 and George Washington Sisk in 1845 born in Hopkins County, Kentucky. Timothy may have been connected to an Andrew, Thomas, Willis, or Asa Sisk. This whole family moved to Shelby County, Illinois by 1850. Family tradition says that Timothy was one of 3 sons. We believe the initial W. stood for William.
