William Mitchell Davidson

Birth: Jan. 2, 1775
North Carolina, USA
Death: May 31, 1846
Washington County
Texas, USA

From rootsweb.com, Rick posted for the Fredericksburg National Heritage Program that Wm M. Davidson died at Rock Island Ferry, on the Brazos river, Washington county, Texas and was buried in the Horse Shoe Bend of that stream in the private burying ground of Amos Gates. On January 10, 1804, he married Elizabeth (Betsy)Vance (who was born on Reem's creek, Buncombe county, North Carolina,March 23, 1787), the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Geo. Newton. She died at the home of her son, Col. Allen Turner Davidson, on Valley river,Cherokee county, April 15, 1861. They settled on a beautiful farm on Jonathan's creek, in Haywood county, where they remained until October 24,1844, when the family went to Santa Anna, Ill., where they remained until 1845, when they again set out for Texas. They settled on Wilson's creek of Collin county in April. From there they moved to Rock Island Ferry, where Mr. Davidson died. The family then returned to North Carolina-April, 1847. One cause of his removal to Texas was an unfortunate mercantile venture which he had made with his sons, W. E., H. H., an A.T., at Waynesville, in 1842. The story of the adventures of this family to and from Texas at that early day, as preserved in a manuscript written by John M. Davidson, one of W. M. Davidson's sons.

GinieReed says: He may be related to Samuel Davidson who was one of the "Old Three Hundred" - original settlers of Texas with Stephen F. Austin - because he is buried next to AMOS GATES who has a State Monument placed by the State of Texas that AMOS GATES was one of the original "Old Three Hundred" - which indicates Gates would have known Davidson and Wm could have had a connection to Gates that way.

According to the genealogy by James Madison Bickers, son of Lewis Alexander Bickers...In conclusion of this history of the Bickers family, I will give a short history of my own family. As I have said heretofore, my father, Lewis Alexander Bickers, married Susan Thompson, a daughter of Allen Thompson, a Baptist preacher who lived at that time 2-1/2 miles West of Medon Station now on the railroad. After my father and mother was married, they moved to what was then known as Wesbrook farm and on the 23rd day of September A.D. 1848, I was borned in a little log house on said farm near Clover Creek in Madison County, Tennessee. My father then bought a place near a Mr. Thomas and we lived there until I was about 3 years old, then he moved to a place near my grandfather Thompson and soon after that, my father went to work on the bridge at Bolivar, Tennessee. I was then 6 years old. Mother sent me to school. That was my first year in school. Mr. C.C. Ruddle was my teacher. He taught in a log school house near a Mr. Joel Rains and William Graves. We called the school house Lick Skillet. I did not learn very much but I have a receipt in my possession that Mr. Ruddle gave my father for the payment of my tuition and I think a great deal of that receipt, for in after years this same Ruddle was my Sunday School teacher and I thought a great deal of Mr. Ruddle and his family, but in December 1856, my father and mother and 2 sisters moved to Prairie County, Arkansas. My father built a house on the edge of the prairie and in that house my sister Sarah Ann was borned in February 1857. My father then took a contract to overseer nigras for a Mr. Holoway. We lived there some time which was near Hickory Plains, Arkansas.
We then moved to White County, Arkansas, about 4 miles from Bebee Station. After we moved to that place, I got lost in the wild woods and was away from my father and mother for a day and night and at that day that part of the country was full of all kinds of wild animals. in December 1856 father built a house on the edge of the prairie and in that house my sister Sarah Ann was borned in February 1857...they had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. Their names were James Madison, Ally, Dora, Sarah Ann, and Charlie Bickers, who died when 2 years, and Dora died when a girl.. My father then took a contract to overseer nigras for a Mr. Holoway [3*]. We lived there some time which was near Hickory Plains, Arkansas...We then moved to White County, Arkansas, about 4 miles from Bebee Station ...
When Lewis Alexander Bickers left for the War, his remaining children went to their Grandfather Thompson, where they found the orp[h]ans of their Uncle Robert Bickers, who had been murdered in Arkansas at the age of 35. Further from the genealogy by James Madison Bickers (G5/N2):
While we lived at that place, my brother Charlie was borned and later on Charlie died and my sister Dora died and, in July 1862, my mother died and the three of them are buried in White County, Arkansas, on a piece of land then owned by a Mr. Jinkins. Mr. Jinkins himself being the first one buried on that land near Cain Creek.. I and my two sisters Ally and Sarah Ann was left in a bad fix, no mother and our father had to go to war. Us three children left without a mother or father to protect us in that wild wilderness of a country and no kin folks to look to for help, but God was with us and taken care of us 3 orphan children. We got a old man Childress to take us children in a wagon 150 miles to Memphis, Tennessee, and we had a time getting there, bad weather and we had to pass through both southern and northern armys, but we finly got to Memphis and the northern army had possession of Memphis when we got there and we had a time getting away from Memphis. It was when Grant was making the second attack on Vicksburg.
When we arrived at our grandfather Thompson's we found there 3 other orphan children at grandfather's house, they were the sons and daughter of Uncle Robert Bickers who was killed by a nigre in Arkansas. This increased my grandfather Thompson to 6 orphan children, which made a great burden on my grandfather and grandmother for they was both old and feeble and my grandfather was nearly blind and he had a blind daughter, Aunt Ally [Alice] Thompson, who was then 50 years old and had been blind all her life, but Aunt Ally did not live but a few months after we got there. Aunt Ally was a good woman and as I write this I can see in my mind tonight that good blind aunt of mine going around that old place and doing things that looks to me now unreasonable for a blind person to do. My grandfather managed to take care of us 6 orphan children very well considering the war times. Both northern and southern armys were at that time making raids in West Tennessee and it was hard on anyone to make anything and keep it.
In 1865, L.A. Bickers married Sara Whitford in Hardeman County, TN, where his brothers, Horace E, and Jefferson Ross were married in the years 1853.
The 1870 Census, p085, Richland TWP, Phillips Co, AR
Lewis Alexander Bickers, white male, 34, b. VA, farmer, RE/$1,200 P/$150.
In 1870, L.A. Bickers was listed among the ‘Notable Men' in Phillips Co, AR [4*]. At some time after this event, Louis Alexander Bickers moved to Tennessee.
On 05 September 1871 he married Lucinda Leathers in Obion County [5*]. The genealogy written by his son, James Madison, in 1907, did not mention this marriage; however, he did relate that he and his cousin, William Thompson, moved from Madison County to Obion County in 1870. Probably Allen Thompson died and remaining family went to his brother. Lewis Alexander must have died before 1877, because James Madison also wrote that his wife, Ann Boyett, died in 1877 and he was all alone, having no children. To be ‘all alone' probably meant all of his immediate family, including his father, were now dead.

Ally M. Bickers (G5/N2)
Dora Bickers (G5/N2) d. in childhood

Note 11.6:
"Robert A. Neill (c1761-1840) who married Mary Alexander (my 4gr-grandparents) was born about 1761 in Rowan County, North Carolina. His parents were William Neill and Mary Clinton, who married in New Castle County, Delaware, in 1750. This William Neill (died c1797, Burke County, NC - father of Robert A Neill] had a brother named James Neill (c. 1730-1793) who, I believe, is the father of Mary (Neill) Holmes. Therefore, this Robert A. Neill is neither her uncle nor her brother, but her first cousin. The Robert Neill who is Mary (Neill) Holmes' brother married Margaret Clayton in Rowan County NC in 1785." -- From Marcy Porter, who has traced her ancestry to Robert A. Neill and Mary Alexander

Note 11.7:
I have found no absolute proof that Mary Neil Holmes is the daughter of James Holmes and Ann Alexander. She cannot be the daughter of James and Mary Neill because Mary was dead before her birth. [Will of James Neill that mentions James Holmes as surviving husband of his deceased daughter Mary: see Appendix L.] Amateur genealogists often name Mary Neill as the mother of both Mary Neil and Sophronia, but, in Ann's pension application, John Holmes, her stepson, seems to attest that he and his brothers and sisters are all listed in the attached bible page.

Neill, recorded in Will Book 10, page 487, on file in Robertson County, TN, archives [Author's note: the year looks as much like 1841 as 1840, but Will Book 10 is reported to have been used in 1839 and 1840.]

William Monroe Baker

Birth: 18 Mar 1853 Hardeman County, Tennessee, USA ?? DC has birth yr as 1849?
Death: 29 Jan 1929 (aged 75) Marshall County, Kentucky, USA
Burial: Birmingham Cemetery, Briensburg, Marshall County, Kentucky, USA
Memorial #: 29745902
Bio:
He was married 2 times to 2 women with similar names. The first wife died... I do not have full records for her but Census Records distinguish by including middle name Jane and i did find marriage records for both spouses. He had most of his children with the first wife, However the dates on the headstone correlate with those of the second wife and not the first... So I feel like this is wife maiden name is indeed Inman and the first wife was maiden name Page. First wife was Eliza F. Page and second wife was Eliza Jane Inman.

Hi, All,
Today I recieved the marriage papers for Aaron MELVIN and Sarah TAYLOR, dated 26 Aug, 1812. Aaron was born about 1796. They lived in the state of Delaware until about 1820, when they moved to Fayette County, OH. My 3rd grt grndfather, Eli MELVIN, 'bought' land in IL in 1840, which was paid for by Aaron, according to the deed. Does anyone have more information on Aaron: names of his children, his parents, etc? Please contact me if you are working on this line? Maybe we can compare notes. Thanks, Judy Goodwin

Sarah Cooper Woodruff

Birth: 17 Mar 1666 Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA
Death: 3 Jun 1727 (aged 61) Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, USA
Burial: First Presbyterian Churchyard, Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, USA
Memorial #: 6079238
Bio:
Born Sarah Cooper in Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1666--the same year that diarist Samuel Pepys wrote of the Great Fire of London--Mrs. Woodruff died in her 62nd year in Elizabethtown (present day Elizabeth) New Jersey. She was the wife of John Woodruff.
Her brown sandstone stele was carved by a craftsman known as "The Old Elizabethtown Soul Carver I". Active during the 1720's-30's, his work is distinguished by highly detailed mortality imagery and the use of skull-with-crossbones soul effigies. Mrs. Woodruff's gravestone typically speaks to the Puritanical emphasis on the brevity and fragility of life on earth, but the combination of the cross bones effigy together with an hourglass flanked by doves is a rarely seen arrangement of symbols. Birds have universally been used to represent spirituality since ancient times, and in colonial America, a bird in vines symbolized the soul partaking of celestial food, with the dove a Christian icon of constancy and devotion. From: MICHAEL MARTINEZ
Subject: Descendants of Elijah Franklin Castleberry -- please add/correct/connect
Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2005 08:44:36 -0800 (PST)

The following is what I have for the descendants of my great, great, great grandfather. Please add, correct, and/or connect if possible ....

Elijah Franklin Castleberry was born about 1818/1819 probably in Caldwell County, KY. He was the son of William Martin Castleberry, Jr. and Jenny Fox. There has been some researchers that says that he is the son of William Martin Castleberry, Jr. and a "Miss Franklin" but I have never seen proof of this marriage.

First, Elijah Franklin Castleberry marries Emily Mae Yates (daughter of Stephen Yates and Mary Polly Hall) who was born abt 1820 or so in KY. From my research they had the following children:

1. Mary G. Castleberry born 24 Nov 1841 in Caldwell Co., KY. She married Elbert Dyer and had the following children: Elbert L. Dyer, Archie Dyer, George H. Dyer, Emily Dyer, and James Dyer. She died 27 Apr 1916.

2. James S. Castleberry born 2 Aug 1844 in Caldwell Co., KY. He married Nancy Lucinda Hays on 1 Sep 1869 in Lyon County, KY. They had the following children: Vanburen Castleberry, William F[ranklin] Castleberry, Mary Francis Castleberry, Julia A. Castleberry, and Sally S. Castleberry. James died 17 Oct 1911 in Lyon County, KY.

3. Edith A. Castleberry born 1846 in Caldwell Co., KY.

4. Nancy Louise Castleberry born 1848 in Caldwell Co., KY.

5. Emily G. Castleberry born 1850 in Caldwell Co., KY.

Then several researchers also list the following two children as part of this sibling group.

6. William Castleberry born 26 Feb 1856 in Lyon County, KY.

7. Sarah Castleberry born 1859 in Lyon County, KY. She married James D. Williams on 15 Feb 1874 in Lyon County. They had the following children: Minnie Williams, William Williams, and Tommy T. Williams.

After some point between 1850/59 and 1869 Emily Yates Castleberry dies. I have never found a death record for her so cannot say for certain what year it occured.

On 9 May 1869 in Trigg County, KY Elijah Franklin Castleberry ... listed as simply Franklin on the marriage record ... marries my great, great, great grandmother Jemima A. Darnall (widow of Joseph H. Lancaster. She was a young widow of 33 years when she remarried and still had several children at home to care for. It may have been a marriage of convenience, I don't know.

Either way, they married and Jemima got pregnant. However, before she even gave birth to the child (my great, great grandmother), Elijah Franklin Castleberry abandoned them ... so the story goes anyway. He was never a presence in their lives again and Jemima returned to using the name from her first marriage even though the child used her father's surname.

On 26 Jun 1870 Emma Katherine "Kate" Castleberry was born in Trigg County, KY. It was common knowledge who her father was and that he had left the family.

Now the problem for me is ... where did Elijah Franklin Castleberry go, did he die unexpectedly and the death not get reported back to his second widow (due to resentment of the marriage or whatever), when did he die, etc.

I have found a notation that he is buried in Chestnut Oak Cemetery in Lyon County, KY but that's all I have found ... no definite record and no date of death.

Anyone that can help with this conundrum? I will be very grateful.

Thanks.

Kathy in FL
