Martha __?__
Husband: William FRIZZELL
Birth: 1797/8, VA
Death: 12 Mar 1858, Marshall Co., KY
Occupation: farmer
Father: David FRIZELL (1774- ) ****
Mother: Mary INGALLS ****
Marriage: ca. 1822, of Bedford Co., TN
Wife: Martha __?__
Birth: 1797-1800, NC
Occupation: homemaker
Children (data in braces are {age, birthplace} from the 1850 Census):
— born in TN, probably Bedford Co.:
1. (Daughter A) FRIZZELL, b. 1810-20
2. (Son A) FRIZZELL, b. 1815-20
3. Richard M. FRIZZELL, b. 1815-20; m. 20 Feb 1840, Calloway Co., KY, Zilpha CHESTER
4. (Daughter B) FRIZZELL, b. 1820-25
5. Nancy FRIZZELL, b. 1822/3 {27, TN}
6. (Daughter C) FRIZZELL, b. 1825-30
7. (Son B) FRIZZELL, b. 1825-30
8. Calvin FRIZZELL, b. 1827/8 {22, TN }
— born in Calloway [now Marshall] Co., KY:
9. John FRIZZELL, b. 1830/1 {19, TN}
10. Melvina FRIZZELL, b. 1833/4 {16, TN}
11. Rebecca FRIZZELL, b. 1835/6 {14, KY}
12. Franklin FRIZZELL, b. 1838/9 {11, KY}

The way the enumerator jumbled the order of the children in the 1850 census, it's no wonder some of the birthplaces (and probably dates) are wrong.

Rebecca " 14 F Ky
Calvin " 22 M Farmer Tenn
John " 19 M " "
Franklin " 11 M Ky
Mcgilbra W. Wiett 5 M "
Lawrence W. Ashton 62 M none Va
Martha is fibbing about her age (she is at least 49). Whose child is McGilbra? Why is he living with them? Is Martha perhaps a WYATT? Otherwise, Lawrence ASHTON is very likely Martha's father. One secondary source treats McGilbra as a grandchild. Living two doors down from William C. HOLLAND, who is living next door to John L. HOLLAND.

William Young VVeteran

Birth: 15 Oct 1744
Death: 1834 (aged 89-90) Perry County, Tennessee, USA
Burial: Dickson-Blackburn Cemetery, Linden, Perry County, Tennessee, USA
Memorial #: 32649493

Bio:
Capt William Young, son of Thomas Young

According to his 1833 pension application, William Young was born in 1744, in what would later become York County, Pennsylvania. He was born to Thomas B. Young Esq., and his first, unknown wife.(1) They also had a daughter Mary about whom little is known. By 1755, when William was 11, his father moved, with William, and perhaps William's sister Mary, down the "Great Wagon Road" through the Shenandoah Valley, and then along the east front of the Blue Ridge Mountains, to South Carolina. His mother must have died before then, as the first child, George, of William's father Thomas and his new wife, Catherine Brandon, was born in South Carolina in 1755. They settled in the Ninety-Six District, in the area that would later become Laurens County. William and his father Thomas received land grants adjacent to each other; both were later, in 1774, sold to Joseph Whitmore.

During the Revolutionary War, William was commissioned as a Lieutenant in Captain Lewis Bobo's Company, in Colonel Thomas Brandon's Second Spartan regiment of South Carolina militia (Colonel Brandon was the brother of William's stepmother Catherine [Brandon] Young). He served a nine-month enrollment, in 1777, and during this term he was involved in a skirmish with the Cherokee Indians. Later, in Sept. 15, 1779, he was enrolled for another two months, as a Captain in Colonel Brandon's regiment; during this time he was at the siege and battle of Savannah. He later served another term of seven months as a Captain in Colonel Brandon's regiment, and was at the siege of Ninety Six, in May and June of 1781. Two months later, as a Captain, he was placed in command of Colonel Brandon's blockhouse on Fair Forest Creek, where he remained for 18 months, until the war's end.

William is believed to have married Margaret Haile (from the research of Melton Meek), the daughter of William Haile, a French Huguenot who had settled in South Carolina many years earlier, and who was a neighbor to the family (he owned property next to Col Brandon, William's step-cousin, later sold to William's father Thomas Young). They lived in the Ninety Six district (Ninety Six district later became Laurens, Union, Spartanburg, and several other Counties, in 1785). Their first known child, John (believed to have married Hannah Miller), was born in Ninety Six about 1775;(2) they also had daughter Catherine born 1788 (married Nathan Ragan), and son Samuel born 1792 (married Mary "Polly" Young). They may also have had sons James, Jesse, and Christopher, but this is uncertain.(3)

William's eldest son, John, married about 1800, and John's first child, William, was born, according to census records, in 1801, while the family was still in Union County South Carolina. By 1807, they had moved to Dickson County, in north central Tennessee. John Miller Young, the second son of William's son John, was born in Dickson County that year, 1807. William's second son Samuel, however, remained in South Carolina when the family moved to Tennessee. William's daughter Catherine may have married her husband Nathan Ragan while the family was in Dickson County, where she and her husband lived until sometime after 1830; by 1840, after William's death, Catherine and Nathan were in Hardeman County, TN.

William's stay in Dickson County must have been short; by 1810, the family had moved across the state line to Christian County, Kentucky, where they appear in the census record under William's name, and where John's next 3 children were born (John Miller Young, Thomas W., and Samuel. John's sons Charles and George were born, later, in Perry county, after 1818). The 1810 Christian County KY census record matches the ages of William and wife, John and his wife and children, and one unknown young woman (possibly daughter Catherine, who about this time married Nathan Ragan back in Dickson County).

According to William's daughter Catherine (Young) Ragan, as recorded in her 1860 application for her father's pension, the family had moved from Union County directly to Christian County KY; however this is incorrect. See note (4) below.

By 1820, the family was in Perry County Tennessee, where they appear in the census record, but in the household of William's eldest son John.

John died in 1830; William appears in the census record that year living with his daughter Catherine in Perry County. He applied for his pension 22 Oct 1833, in Perry County, and received his last disbursement on 6 May 1834; he must have died shortly after. He is buried in a large stone crypt in the Dickson-Blackburn cemetery in Linden, TN, next to his son John. Notably, he is listed as "William Young 3d" in his pension payment record. As his father was Thomas, this suffix probably refers to his grandfather (William I) and an uncle (William II).

(1) We know William was the son of Thomas from a story related by William's son Samuel. A "stranger," who identified himself as Thomas Young of Spartanburg, appeared at Samuel's gate, and after a short introduction explained that he had come in order to borrow money, needed to save his farm. This Thomas Young mentioned that he was the grandson of the Young who was "...the Tory that met your uncle Thomas Young in the middle of the Enoree River at the battle of Blackstock's farm in October, 1781." According to the memoirs of Major Thomas Young (Samuel's uncle), this incident, where he and his cousin Tory Col William Young confronted each other across a creek, actually occurred during a scouting expedition at Mudlick Creek, south of Laurens, in July or August of 1781. The Battle of Blackstock's Farm occurred a year earlier, in November 1780. The Thomas who was the "stranger" in this story was probably the son of Tory Col William Young's son Richard. Col William had one other grandson Thomas, the son of his son Nathaniel, but that Thomas emigrated to Giles County County, in 1818, probably too early to have been the Thomas in this story. Thomas, the son of Richard, remained in Union County, where he died in 1837.

(2) John's census record in 1820 in Perry County TN shows two males - John and William - aged 45 or older.

(3) From the research (family bibles, records) of Brent Holcomb and Melton Meeks

(4) Catherine died in 1861, one year after she wrote the pension application, wherein she indicated she was 85 years old, and her only surviving brother Samuel was 78 (she was actually 72, according to a Bible record, and Samuel was 68). She also admitted to "being old & her memory weak she cannot be positive as to dates." She also indicated the family moved directly from South Carolina, to Kentucky, in 1822, when we know the family had already passed through Kentucky, and were living in Perry County Tennessee at that time. She also mentioned that the family records had all been burned in a fire; this fact is repeated in family histories of other of William's descendants.

Only materials pertinent to the military service of the veteran and to contemporary events have been transcribed. Affidavits that provide additional information on these events are included and genealogical information is abstracted, while standard, 'boilerplate' affidavits and attestations related solely to the application, and later nineteenth and twentieth century research requests for information have been omitted. I use speech recognition software to make all my transcriptions. Such software misinterprets my southern accent with unfortunate regularity and my poor proofreading skills fail to catch all misinterpretations. Also, dates or numbers which the software treats as numerals rather than words are not corrected: for example, the software transcribes "the eighth of June one thousand eighty six" as "the 8th of June 1786." From later business transactions and court records, some dates of birth of his children have been inferred. The loss of records have destroyed much of the information of Robert and of his death.

Woodson, Robert Sr (I2045)

369

- much info obtained from the book 'Historical Genealogy of the Woodsons and their Connections'
- may have been the brother to Robert Woodson's 1st wife Sarah Lewis
- In William and Mary Qtrly there is this statement, 'There is a nuncupative will of William Lewis who mentions his two sons William Lewis and Joseph Lewis, and
- wife Adding, who was perhaps his 2nd wife.'
- The names of these children are recorded in the fourth generation but farther than that the line has not been traced.
- 1707 - grandfather Robert Woodsobn of Henrico Co, VA made a deed to these two grandsons, William Lewis Jr and Joseph Lewis
- See Wm & Mary Qtrly Vol IX p. 255

- Regarding the above statement about 2nd wife Adding(?) - the actual document states: '... he disposed of all the residuals of his estate to his wife, Adding, considering
- his children, that they were her children as well as his and for that reason doubted not but that she would do as well for them as he would do if in her place, therefore
- he would give nothing from her, but leave all to her disposal.' --- The fact that the word adding was capitalized have led many to believe it was a name -- his wife's name ????

*Sarah, the daughter of John LEWIS and his wife, Isobel WARNER. ?? or Isabella Miller -- See below
Born ca 1660

MERIWETHER LEWIS
This family is a part of the Meriwether LEWIS group.

LINEAGE
Sarah's paternal grandfather was Robert LEWIS, an immigrant from Wales.

Her maternal grandfather was Augustine WARNER, an immigrant from Norwich, England.

MARRIAGE
Married as 1st wife to Robert Woodson Jr

Sarah Lewis Woodson died before 1710. Robert remarried RACHEL WATKINS

NOTES ON LEWIS LINE FROM LEWIS WEBSITE
Some historians claim that the Welsh Lewis family descended from the French line of monarchs (Louis).
However, the oldest known Lewis from the explorer's family was Ben Robert Lewis of Wales.

The patriarch of the Virginia Lewises came in 1635 on a ship called the "Blessing."
Robert Lewis II served as an officer in the British Army and arrived to claim a land grant in a part of York County that is now in Gloucester, VA.
He married a woman named Elizabeth before emigrating, and once in Virginia, they parented two children, William and Major John Lewis.
William died without having any children, so John inherited 33,333 1/3 acres from his father.

John Lewis married Isabella Warner, and they settled "Warner Hall" which was named for Isabella.
They had a son, John Lewis II, born in 1669.

John Lewis II, called Councilor John due to his service on the King's Council in 1715, married his first cousin, Elizabeth Warner-the woman who would later become the great aunt to George Washington.
They gave birth to 14 children: Catherine, Elizabeth, Col. John Lewis III, Col. Charles Lewis, Col. Robert Lewis III, Elizabeth, Isabella, and Ann.
The names of the other children remain unknown.

Colonel Robert Lewis III was born in 1702, and later lived at Belvoir.
The Lewis' family home remained at Warner Hall, but the growing clan could not hold each branch.
Colonel Robert Lewis and his wife, Jane Meriwether, the daughter of Nicholas Meriwether II and Elizabeth Crawford, established a new estate at Belvoir.
This was the first of 11 intermarriages between the Meriwether and Lewis families.
Robert Lewis amassed a large amount of land in Goochland and Albemarle Counties throughout his life, which he later divided among his children.
He acquired the land in Ivy Depot, VA in 1740.
Locust Hill, the childhood home of Meriwether Lewis, was built on this land, and Meriwether's father was the first Lewis to inhabit it.

Robert Lewis and Jane Meriwether Lewis, Meriwether Lewis's paternal grandparents, gave birth to 11 children.
They were John (the nephew of John Lewis III), Nicholas (a guardian to Meriwether Lewis upon his return from Georgia; he lived at "The Farm."), Charles (the nephew of Charles Lewis I), Colonel William Lewis, Robert IV, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ann, Mildred, and Mary.
All of their children lived to maturity and bore offspring. (Meriwether, 1964)

Colonel William Lewis married his first cousin once removed and step-sister, Lucy Meriwether, who was the daughter of Thomas Meriwether and Elizabeth Thornton.
Thomas Meriwether and Robert Lewis remained good friends throughout their lives, and Robert married Elizabeth after they had both lost their spouses. (McAllister, 1906)

Lucy Meriwether Lewis and Colonel William Lewis lived with their three children, Jane, Meriwether, and Reuben at Locust Hill until William's death in 1779.
Six months after his death, Lucy Lewis married Captain John Marks (some say on the advice of her dying husband) and moved the family to Georgia.
There, Lucy gave birth to Meriwether Lewis's half siblings, John Marks II and Mary. (Bakeless, 15)
As Meriwether Lewis died unmarried, and Reuben Lewis and his wife Mildred left no children, Jane Lewis Anderson mothered the only collateral descendents of Meriwether Lewis.

*Isobel WARNER
Born ca 1640

Her grandfather was Augustine WARNER, an immigrant from Norwich, England FaG 7656579

Married John Lewis

Children Sarah, Born ca 1660

Tradition long had it that the Lewises of Warner Hall descended from a Robert who had a grant from the crown for 33,3331/3 acres, and that Robert's lineage was ancient and Welsh. Tradition, however, was largely undone in 1948 on the discovery of several tombstones on Poropotancke Creek in King and Queen County: "Here lieth interred the body of John Lewis (born in Munmouth shire) died the 21st of August 1657 aged 63 years." Robert was wrong, Wales was right. The line reaches back to Rhys Goch ap Maenyrch, born c 1070, lord of Ystrad Yw. Firm documentation starts with Richard, grandfather of John. Subsequent research into church, land, and emigration records bears all this out convincingly.

Excerpted from Lewis of Warner Hall by Merrow Egerton Sorley

"Councilor" John Lewis inherited from his father the Chemokins estate in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA. His father had made this estate his principal place of residence and it was also the first home of Col. John and Elizabeth Warner Lewis after their marriage about 1692. At a meeting of the Vestry on January 5, 1695, John Lewis was elected a Vestryman for St. Peter's Parish and his name appears as such at no less than 14 Vestry meetings between this date and June, 1791. By 1702, John Lewis had "departed this county", presumably making the move to Warner Hall, which his wife, Elizabeth Warner, inherited at the death of her brother Robert.

Councilor John Lewis was perhaps the wealthiest Virginian of his day. His land holdings included 2,000 acres in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester, 300 acres in York County, 2,600 acres in New Kent County, and several grants in King and Queen County, the largest of which was for 10,100 acres. The 2,600 acres in New Kent County represents the exact size of the Chemokins estate. He held a commission in the Virginia militia as some of the baptismal records of his children refer to him as Capt. John Lewis. He rose to Colonel Commandant of the militia of Gloucester County and most of the records of the 18th century accord him that title.

In 1704, Col. John Lewis was appointed a member of the Council along with his brother-in-law, John Smith of "Purton". He continued on the Council for the rest of his life. The end of his life in 1725/6 marks the end of an era in the Lewis history. Thenceforward, the history of the entire family is not so closely bound up with the vicinity of Warner Hall. While many of its members continued to reside in this home and nearby localities for several generations, descendants moved over the whole of Virginia and, eventually, throughout the southern states.

Elizabeth Warner

She brought into the Lewis family not only the ancestral lines of Martiau, Reade, and Warner, but also the ownership of Warner Hall itself. She had 14 children in all, with the names of nine being known. Their baptismal records are in the Abingdon Parish Register.

Augustine Warner (November 28th, 1610 - December 26th, 1674), was born in Norwich, Norfolk, to Thomas Warner and Elizabeth Sotherton. He was the progenitor of the Augustine Warner Family, who arrived in Virginia in 1628 at the age of seventeen, one of a group of thirty-four brought in by Adam Thoroughgood. His first land acquisition came 7 years later when he patented 250 acres (1,000,000 m2).

Continuing the typical pattern of seventeenth-century success in Virginia as a merchant, investor in land, and statesman, he rose through the colonial hierarchy to become a member of the House of Burgesses in 1652 and then in 1659 a member of the King's Council, which he held until his death. About 1657, he moved across the York River to Gloucester County, where he settled and built the first house at Warner Hall.

Augustine Warner died in 1674, at sixty-three, and was succeeded at Warner Hall by his only son, Augustine Warner, Jr. (1642-1681). After his English education in London and at Cambridge, the younger Augustine Warner returned to Virginia, and soon, by 1666, became a member of the House of Burgesses, and then Speaker of the House in 1676. In 1677 he took his seat on the King's Council, but his career was cut short by his early death in 1681 at the age of thirty-nine.

Besides the son Augustine Warner the second, the first Augustine Warner (1610-1674) had at least two daughters. One married David Cant, and the other, Sarah, married Lawrence Townley, and was the ancestor of General Robert E. Lee.

It is recorded that the second Augustine Warner (1642-1681) had three sons, all of whom died unmarried, and three daughters, who inherited the Warner property and left huge progenies.

The three were; (a) Mary Warner, who married in 1680 John Smith of Purton, they were the ancestors of Queen Elizabeth II through the Bowes-Lyon ancestry of the Queen Mum (Queen Elizabeth II's mother); (b) Mildred Warner, who married about 1690 Lawrence Washington (1659–1698), ancestors of George Washington, and (c) Elizabeth Warner, who married about 1691 to John Lewis, and kept the Warner Hall house itself in the division of the Warner properties after the brothers’ deaths. Elizabeth and John Lewis were the grandparents of Fielding Lewis, who married first George Washington’s cousin and second his sister, both ladies also being grandchildren of Mildred Warner. Additionally Elizabeth and John Lewis were the ancestors of Meriwether Lewis of the Corps of Discovery fame.

Warner Hall stayed in the eldest male line of the Lewis family, through a succession of eldest sons named Warner Lewis, until 1834, when it was finally sold by a daughter of the last of them, another Elizabeth Lewis.

Warner Hall is still known by this name and the Lewis descendants became known as the Warner Hall Lewises. A non-profit DNA Project LEWIS Surname DNA Project is actively seeking descendants from this paternal line. In some cases a scholarship may be offered.

Charles Thurman

Birth: 6 Feb 1760 Buckingham County, Virginia, USA
Death: 16 Dec 1848 (aged 88) Bledsoe County, Tennessee, USA
Burial: Lone Cedar CemeteryBledsoe County, Tennessee, USA
Memorial #: 8364949
Bio:
Private Continental Line Revolutionary War.The following is a transcript of the court declaration Charles gave to apply for his military pension:On the fiftenth day of August in the year 1832 personally appeared in open court before the worshipful justices of the county court for the county of Bledsoe aforesaid now sitting Charles Thurman a resident of the county of Bledsoe asforesaid in the state of Tennessee aged seventy-two years who first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath. make the following declaration in order to obtain benefits of the Act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832.That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated---He was drafted and entered the service in the Virginia Militia under the command of Captain Thomas Redd and was stationed at Abermermarle (sp.) barracks and employed in guarding Burgoynes prisoners. At the expiration of his term, which he served out at that place, and which was for three months, he received a discharge from Captain Redd but which has been lost or destroyed or has become from age so dim as to be illegible, as he has some old papers in his procession which are in that condition. He then resided in Buckingham County, Virginia, but in consequence of the loss of his discharge, and failure of memory is unable to state the time when returned and quit the service. He further states that besides the above mentioned tour he served six others of three months each in the Virginia Militia, making in all twenty-one months. one of said terms he was drafted and entered the service in Buckingham County under John Mosley and marched from there with him to Petersburg where he was transfered to Captain Thomas W. Ewell's company which for a time joined Col Buford's regiment-(which he thinks was the First Virginia Regiment) to make up a deficiency in it occasioned by the loss of men at time of Buford's defeat. Under Captain Ewell and Colonol Buford he marched from Petersburg to Hillsboro in North Carolina from Hillsboro to Salsbury-from Salsbury to Charlotte and from there to Chensaw Hills in South Carolina where he was stationed he thinks for about a month under General Greene. From Chensaw Hills he marched under General Greene to Salabury and then fell in behind General Morgan who has the prisoners taken at the Battle of King's Mountain and marched in that condition to Dan River and there stationed between Morgan and Cornwallis who was on the opposite side of Dan River. From there he marched after Cornwallis to Hillsboro and from there to Guilford where he was in the battle fought at that place serving under Captain Ewell, Colonel Bluford and General Greene. He sees from a certificate or discharge which he has from Captain Ewell that he once belonged to Col. Gibson's regiment but in what manner he was attached to it he cannot now recollect, in fact it has untimely escaped from his memory that he ever did belong to such a regiment. He cannot state the order of time in which he served under the different officiers, but was during his service under the command of Captains Thomas Redd, Thomas W. Ewell, two different Captains of the names of John Mosely-Webb-Nath Cunningham, some captain of Culpepper County, his name not recollected and some other captains whose names are forgotten. After the Battle of Guilford he enetered the service in Abermarle County under the command of one of the Captains John Mosley as substitute for William Cowan and marched under him to the seige of York. There he remained in service and was in the battle, and after it saw Cornwallis deliver his sword to the American officier. He was then transferred to Captain Nathanial Cunningham's company and placed to guard the prisoners and under Cunningham marched with them to Winchester Barracks where he was finally discharged by Captain Cunningham on the 7th of Novemeber, 1781. He states that Nehemial Evitt who then resided in Buckingham County, Virginia and by whom the applicant was raised as a step-father, now lives in the (Bledsoe) county, can testify that he entered the service of the United States as set forth in his declaration and returned from the war at the expiration of his several terms. He further states that he was born in Buckingham County in the state of Virginia on the 6th day of February, 1760-has no record of his age, but has the verbal account of his mother which he believes to be true. When called into service, he lived in Buckingham County, Virginia. After the Revolutionary War he moved from Buckingham County to Washington County, Virginia where he lived in the neighborhood of King's Salt Works about sixteen years- from there he moved to Rhea County, Tennessee where he lived for one year. and from there to this (Bledsoe) county, Tennessee where he now lives and has lived for sixteen or seventeen years. He was drafted six times and went for one (the last) as a substitute for William Cowen. He received several discharges given by his captains, they are all destroyed or misplaced as stated above except one given by Captain Webb, one by Captain Ewell and one by Captain Cunningham. He states that he is known to Col. Wm. Brown deputy Sheriff of Bledsoe County, Joseph McDowell and William Hall acting Justices of Peace for said county in his neighborhood who testify to his character for verification and their belief of his service as a soldier of the revolution. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annunity except the pension and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the aging of any state.Sworn to and subscribed this day and year aforesaid. His MarkCharles Thurman

Notes for Jesse R. DERRYBERRY

Biography

Jesse R. was born about 1807 or 1808 in North Carolina, most likely in Burke Co., where his parents lived at that time.
Since some secondary sources ascribe a son to Andrew by the name of "Richard," Jesse's middle initial may well have
stood for Richard, but no sources found to date tell us for sure. When Jesse was a baby, the family moved west to
Warren Co., TN, and in the 1820s they moved again to Perry Co., TN. Jesse is most likely in his father's household in
1820 (age 10-16) in Warren Co., and 1830 (age 20-29) in Perry Co.

His whereabouts in 1840 are unknown, and this was just a year after his father's death. However, by about 1845 at the
latest he had moved south to Jackson, MS. He became a Mason, and about that time became part of Lodge No. 23 at Pearl.
He remained active in the Masons, becoming a representative for that lodge. He also opened a livery stable, which he
owned for many years. The following advertisement was run in local newspapers in 1845 and 1846:

"Livery Stable. J. R. Derryberry returns his thanks to his friends, for the liberal patronage he has received
heretofore. He intends keeping his stable well supplied with provender and attentive ostlers. He hopes to be able to
render satisfaction to all who may favor him with their custom. His stable is on the right side of State street,
between the Mansion House and Mr. McNair's new brick building fronting the store of Messrs. Hobson & Lamb, where he will always be found. He will be pleased to attend to all who may patronize his stable. --Jackson, Dec. 1845."

In 1848, he was one of a number of men granted charter by the Mississippi State Legislature to form the Pearl River
Steamship Navigation Company. He was probably the "Col. Derryberry" mentioned in an article from the "Times-Picayune" (New Orleans, LA), 15 Jan 1848: "Jackson (Miss.) Races. -- The following report we take from the Mississippian: Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1848--Purse $100--mile heats. ... Col. Derryberry's 'Comet', by imp. Belshazzar, out of the dam of St. Cloud. ..." No other record of official military service or rank has been found.

No further evidence of his shipping activities has been found, but between the two professions he was evidently quite
successful. By 1860, he had amassed an estate of $4000 in personal property and $10,000 in real estate. Furthermore,
he owned a number of slaves in both 1850 and 1860 (see below).

There is no evidence that Jesse ever married, and he had no one else in his household in 1850 or 1870. In 1860,
however, his nephew John W. C. Derryberry was living with him, as were two young boys, Richard and William, ages 14 and 9, respectively. John W. C. had probably moved from Tennessee to Mississippi in the late 1850s. In 1869, he married a widow from Simpson Co., MS, after which he returned to Madison Co., TN with his wife. The young boys cannot be attributed to any of Jesse's immediate relatives, and so they will be considered here as adopted sons. Their parentage is otherwise a mystery. There was also a John D. Derberry, age 22, incarcerated in Jackson for larceny, but his relationship to Jesse, if any, is also unknown.

During the Civil War, Jesse contributed $230 to the Quartermaster of the Army of the Mississippi "for the defence of
the State." During the war, Jesse's horses and stable were impressed into Confederate service from time to time. From
Confederate papers, a letter to Col. M[adison] McAfee dated 26 Jun 1861 states "please pay J. R. Derryberry two dollars
& fifty cents for forage for horses used to convey J. Knowlton from Brandon to headquarters at Jackson." Another, same
date, states "pay John Derryberry four dollars for buggy hire." (This was probably Jesse's nephew, John W. C.) Other
forms dated 1862 indicate J. R. was paid for stable use and saddle. An invoice dated 7 May 1863, mentions J. R. was
reimbursed $275 for a horse and $40 for saddle impressed by order of Lt. Gen. Pomerton.

Jesse is not found in any records after the 1870 census, and probably died between 1870 and 1880.

Slavery

The census schedules from that time describe slaves as either "black" or "mulatto" and do not give their names. The
1850 census shows Jesse with 3 slaves: black male age 23, mulatto female age 35, and black female age 4. In 1860, he
had 7 slaves, including a mulatto female age 47 (probably the same woman from 1850). The remainder were a black female age 34 and 5 mulatto males (4 age 18 and one age 16).

Census records from 1880 to 1910 mention a black man named Handy Derryberry born about 1868 in Mississippi, who lived in 1880 in Covington Co. and from 1900-1910 in Steens, Rankin Co. About 1895 he married a woman named Rena. Handy may have been the son of one of the slaves from Jesse's household, since he was the only Derryberry slave holder in the area.

"Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Mississippi" shows J. R. Derryberry as representative of Lodge No. 23 at Pearl in
1851.

1860 US census, Jackson, Hinds Co., MS; p. 15
J. R. Derrybery, age 53, livery s keeper, $4000/10,000, b. NC
J. H. C. Derryberry [male], age 30, b. TN

W. S. Derryberry [male], age 9, b. MS
1860 US census, Jackson, Hinds Co., MS; p. 51 [prison]
John D. Derberry, age 22, sailor, b. NY, larceny

(The John D. Derberry found above may well be another son of Jesse's despite the stated birthplace of New York. It
would be very coincidental for someone with a name similar to Derryberry to be found in Hinds Co. of all places, where
Jesse was living, yet be unrelated.)

In 1861, he contributed $230 to the Quarter-Master General of the Army of Mississippi, towards funds for raising "means
for the Defence of the State."

From Confederate papers, letter to Col. M[adison] McAfee dated 26 Jun 1861 states "please pay J. R. Derryberry two

Another, same date, states "pay John Derryberry four dollars for buggy hire." Other forms dated 1862 indicate J. R.

Subject: Hibbs in KY
Date: Wed, 8 Oct 1997 16:55:19 -0500

Hello! I have already learned that I will enjoy this list tremendously!
My husband is from Kentucky, born in Hodgenville, raised in Elizabethtown.
His Hibbs came into early Nelson Co, KY.

Isaac HIBBS, b; abt 1740 in Bucks Co., PA and d/ 1813 in Nelson Co., KY.
He m/ Elizabeth ROBERTS in the Low Dutch Church of North and South Hampton
(now the Presbyterian church of Churchville, Bucks, PA) Isaac was disowned
by the Quakers for marrying a German "Dutch" girl. It appears he made the
break then from the Quaker Church as he is not found listed in Quaker
records from then on. Apparently isaac left PA with his wife and some of
his brothers in to VA where he settled briefly in Loudon Co then to Bedford
Co. In Dec of 1791 he moved to Nelson Co., KY, following his daughter
Rachel who had m/ Nicholas Osburn. They had moved to Nelsvon Co., Ky in
1788.

Among other children, Isaac had a son John H. Hibbs who was b/ abt 1791 in
VA, probably Bedford Co. He m/ Sarah (Sally) Hibbs, 4 Nov 1813 in Hardin
Co., KY. I believe John died in Hopkins Co., KY as in 1860 census page
203-4 Household 1388/family#1388 Sarah is living in the household of James
A. Hibbs, their son. John is found nowhere else in records, so it is
assumed he is dead by then.

Sarah (Sally) is the daughter of John Hibbs b/ 1775-1794 and Christina ?.
I believe John d/ bef 15 Aug 1818 probably in Hardin Co., KY. John had
begun a land transaction with Ralph Stovall prior to Aug 15, 1818. At that
time a deed was written from Stovall tot he children and heirs of John
Hibbs, dec'd. It is possible he died between 27 jul 1816 and the above
date. In the margin of Deed Book F, page 32 in written the following
notation: "Exam'd & delivered to John Hibbs per order." This note is
written beside a deed from Reuben Kemp and his wife Patty to William
Patterson. However it is unclear exactly which John Hibbs this refers to.

In 1800 one John Hibbs paid taxes in Nelson Co., Ky. . In 1810 census,
one Christiana Hibbs is listed as head of household, but there is a male,
in her same age category in the
household. I wonder if this might have been John, and he an invalid,
injured or something.

This John and his wife Christiana are an enigma. I've been unable to find
anything about either of them. I've been able to trace the lineage of
theother Hibbs line easily, but this, this has me stumped. Any one know
anything about them?
