Bio:
French Royalty. During the winter of 1199/1200 Eleanor of Aquitaine, aged 79 years, travelled to Castile to visit her daughter and to select a wife for the French heir to the throne. During her stay in Palencia she chose her twelve-year-old granddaughter Blanche to strengthen the peace treaty between John of England and Philippe II Auguste. Blanche accompanied her to Fontevraud and from there she travelled alone. In May the court travelled to Normandy to celebrate the wedding. France had been placed under the interdict after the king had repudiated his second wife and the wedding could therefore not be celebrated on French territory. Afterwards the young couple lived together in Paris. They were taught together, played together and grew up together. Their first child was born in 1205, but died soon afterwards. In 1214, she gave birth to a son who was named after the father and who will later succeed him. A month after the death of Philippe II Auguste they were crowned in Reims. In the following years Louis has to fight in the west and south, conquers La Rochelle and Poitou, and Blanche manages the kingdom from Paris. In 1226, he besieges Avignon and takes the city in September. As a result Beaucaire, Nîmes, Carcassonne, Béziers and Narbonne surrender. The army is seized by a dysentery epidemic, the Siege of Toulouse is abandoned due to the weakened army. His health, which has always been weak, took another downturn. In November, he became sick and died on the 8th. He is buried a week later in Saint-Denis and his eldest son, only 12 years old, is crowned king. Blanche becomes regent for him and soon has to fight for her power. A child on the throne gives several barons hope for more power and larger territories. A group with Pierre de Bretagne, Hugh X de Lusignan, and Thibaut IV de Champagne is supported by the English king and count Raymond VII of Toulouse. They rebel but Blanche raises an army and defeats them in the same winter. In March, they swear loyalty to the king and the rebellion is over. To secure the peace in the south she signs a peace treaty with her cousin Raymond VII of Toulouse and marries her son Alphonso to his daughter. With the years Blanche becomes more and more secure in her power and even reigns without a council. In 1234, she marries her son to Marguerite de Provence in hope to later include the Provence into the kingdom. The two women can't stand each other from the beginning. With the years Louis restricted her power, but she remains his closest advisor and when he felt unwell she is there to take over for him. When Louis left France for the crusade she is installed as regent, but is not given full power. In February 1250 Louis army is defeated at Mansurah, he is imprisoned and his younger brother Robert is killed. After paying a huge ransom he is released but remains in the holy land to secure the Christian interests. In 1251, she suppresses a rebellion of peasants and afterwards retires to Maubuisson.

Birth: 1158
Wigmore
Herefordshire, England
Death: Jun. 8, 1214
Wigmore
Herefordshire, England

Roger Mortimer, eldest surviving son and heir of Hugh and Maud. In his father's lifetime he appears on the Pipe Roll as holding terrae datae in Worcestershire and Salop. He was a benefactor of Gloucester Abbey, of Kington, St. Michael, Wilts, of Cwmhir, of Jumièges, and Saint-Victor-en-Caux. Between 1182 and 1189 he attested at Rouen a charter of Henry II to the monks of Barbey (diocese of Bayeux). In 1191, upon a charge of conspiring with the Welsh against the King, he was forced to surrender his castles and to leave the country for three years. In April 1194 he was in England again, and witnessed a charter of Richard I, after his second Coronation at Winchester. In 1210 some of his knights served in the King's invasion of Ireland.
Roger married Isabel, daughter of Walkelin de Ferrières, seigneur of Ferrières-Saint-Hilaire and lord of Oakham. Roger died before 19 August 1214, having, with the King's permission, resigned his lands to his son Hugh when he was taken ill, and was at buried at Wigmore. His widow Isabel married, 2ndly, Piers Fitz Herbert, of Blaen Llyfni, who died 1 June 1235. She retained her father's English lands till her death. She died before 29 April 1252, and was buried in the chapel, which she had built in the court of the Hospital of St. John of Lechlade.

Roger Mortimer

Birth: Apr. 25, 1287
Wigmore
Herefordshire, England
Death: Nov. 29, 1330
Tyburn
Staffordshire, England

Roger de Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, was the son of Edmund Mortimer and Margaret de Fiennes. He was an English nobleman and was for three years de facto ruler of England. He lead a successful rebellion against Edward II. Mortimer was also the lover of Edward II's wife, Isabella of France, who assisted him in the deposition and allegedly, the murder of her husband. A few days before young Edward's eighteenth birthday, both Mortimer and Isabella were seized by Edward and his companions from inside Nottingham Castle. In spite of Isabella's entreaty to her son, "Fair son, have pity on the gentle Mortimer," Mortimer was conveyed to the Tower. After being accused of assuming royal power and other crimes, Mortimer was executed by hanging at Tyburn.
Roger married Joan de Geneville ,the wealthy daughter of Sir Piers de Geneville, of Trim Castle and Ludlow, in 1301, and immediately began a family. One being their heir Edmund
After Rogers death Joan petitioned Edward III for the return of her husband's body so she could bury it at Wigmore Abbey. Mortimers lover, Isabella, had buried his body at Greyfriars, Coventry following his hanging. Edward III replied, "Let his body rest in peace." The King later relented, and Mortimers body was transferred to Wigmore Abbey, where Joan was later buried beside him.

This memorial is an cenotaph for Roger Mortimer, his original burial place is Greyfriars

Edward I

Birth: Jun. 17, 1239
Death: Jul. 7, 1307

English Monarch. The eldest son of Henry III and Eleanor of Provence, he was known as Longshanks and "Hammer of the Scots". He ascended the throne upon the death of Henry in 1272, but was not formally crowned until August 19, 1274. He married Eleanor of Castile at Burgos, Spain on October 18, 1254. To her he was a loving and devoted, if not entirely faithful, husband and they had 16 children. After Eleanor's death in 1290, he married Margaret of France on September 8, 1299. They had three children. Much of Edward's reign was spent at war. He completed the conquest of Wales, defeating and uniting the Welsh marches, and defended his duchy of Gascony in France. But the latter half of his reign would be consumed by trouble in Scotland. The death of the young Margaret, Maid of Norway left the throne of Scotland vacant, and Edward siezed upon the opportunity to establish his control. He appointed John Balliol to the throne, but retained direct rule over the Scots and Balliol. In 1297 William Wallace rebelled and recovered much of the country, but Edward crushed the rebellion, captured Wallace and had him executed. He then summoned a complete Parliament, including elected Scottish representatives, and it was decided that a Council would rule Scotland under Edward's supervision. But Robert the Bruce unexpectedly rebelled and murdered his fellow Councillors. Despite failing health, Edward once again went north. He died en route to Scotland at Burgh-On-Sands, Cumbria at the age of 68. He was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Edward II. (bio by: VampireRed)

Thibaut II "le Grand" de Champagne

Birth: Apr. 2, 1090
Death: Jan. 10, 1152

Nobility, as Thibaut II Count of Champagne and as Thibaut IV Count of Blois. He was the second eldest son of Etienne Henri de Blois and Adela of England. He inherited the titles Count of Troyes and Count of Champagne from his uncle Hugh in 1125. His relationship with his liege Louis VI was a very ambivalent relationship. While he supported him in 1111 against a revolt he turned against him two years later when the king denied him the county of Corbeil. He allied with his uncle Henry I of England but signed a peace contract with Louis when Henry was excommunicated. From 1127 on he again opposed the King of France. This constant changing of sides did not change with the new king Louis VII. After Thibaut had helped arrange his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1137 he came in conflict with the king about the introduction of a new Archbishop of Bourges. After the death of Henry I he was proposed by the norman barons to succeed him, as he was the eldest grandson of William the Conqueror. But his youngest brother Stephen was able to obtain the crown. In exchange he received the regency over Normandy which he lost again in 1144 when Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, invaded the county. He was unable to prevent it because he was occupied with Louis who had invaded the Champagne. But soon Louis feared the new strength of the Anjou family and now allied with Thibaut. He is known as a supporter of the Cistercians and for the foundation of the abbeys of Clairvaux, Trois-Fontaines and Pontigny. He also granted Pierre Abelard refuge after he had had to flee from Saint Denis University. Thibaut was married to Mathilde of Carinthia who bore him eleven children. His eldest sons married the daughters of King Louis and Eleanor while his youngest daughter married the king himself.
