Miles de Gloucester

Birth: 1100
Gloucester
Gloucestershire, England
Death: Dec. 24, 1143, England

Miles de Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford, Lord of Brecknock was the son of Walter de Gloucester
He was high in the service of Henry I between 1130 and 1135, he was Constable of England and combined the hereditary office of Sheriff of Gloucester with that of local justiciar for Gloucestershire.
Miles founded Llanthony Secunda Priory, Gloucester, in 1136
After the death of King Henry he declared for Stephen, at whose court he appears as constable in 1136. King Stephen granted him the honor of Gloucester and Brecknock. However, in 1139, when the empress Matilda appeared in England, he declared for her, and placed the city of Gloucester at her disposal; he was further distinguished by sacking the nearby royalist city of Worcester, attacking Stephen's siege works at Wallingford Castle and reducing the county of Hereford. He was retained as her Constable.
In 1141, he was rewarded with the earldom of Hereford when Matilda ruled the country. He remained loyal to the Empress after her defeat at Winchester the same year.
He married Sibyl de Neufmarché, daughter of Bernard de Neufmarché, Lord of Brecon and Nest, granddaughter of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, in 1121. Their children were:
Bertha of Hereford, married William de Braose before 1150, by whom she had issue.
Roger Fitzmiles, 2nd Earl of Hereford.
Walter de Hereford died after 1159 in the Holy Land. He was Sheriff of Gloucester in 1155-1157 and Sheriff of Hereford in 1155-1159.
Henry Fitzmiles, died 12 April 1165. He succeeded to the title of Baron Abergavenny in 1141/42.
William de Hereford. He died before 1160 without issue.
Mahel de Hereford, died October 1165 at Bronllys Castle, Breconshire, Wales, mortally hurt when a stone dropped from the tower during a fire; died without issue. Buried at Llanthony Priory.
Margaret of Hereford, married Humphrey II de Bohun, by whom she had issue.
Lucy of Gloucester, married Herbert FitzHerbert of Winchester, Lord Chamberlain, by whom she had issue. Buried at Llanthony Priory.
Miles was shot by an arrow in the head during a hunting accident in Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England and was buried in Llanthony Priory.

Janet Grant Collie

Birth: 2 Apr 1683
Death: 7 Apr 1755 (aged 72) Moray, Scotland
Burial: Essil Old Churchyard, Garmouth, Moray, Scotland
Memorial #: 83606223
Bio:
The daughter of William Grant and Janet Brander; Wife of William Collie and the mother of James Collie who imigrated to America and fought in the American Revolutionary War.

Scottish Origins of the Collie Family ca. 1751 , Virginia

William Collie and Janet Grant were the parents of James Collie, the first Collie to immigrate to the colonies from Garmouth, County Moray, Scotland. William Collie was born about 1650 in County Moray, Scotland and died 22 Mar 1752, at Garmouth, County Moray, Scotland. William was married by 1704 to Janet Grant. She was born prior to 2 April 1683 which was the day she was baptized in the nearby Presbyterian parish church at the village of Urquhart, located about four miles west of Garmouth. She died 7 April 1755 in Garmouth and was buried the next day in the Essil cemetery. The church records reveal that William and Janet had at least seven children, one of whom was James Collie, the immigrant to America. Their children are listed in my Ancestry tree.

William's parents-John Collie, Margaret Dill/Gill, uncertain.

Janet's parents-William Grant, Janet Brander.

*Scottish tradition-name the first son after the paternal grandfather, name the first daughter after her mother.

James Collie left the Garmouth area sometime prior to February 21, 1751 when he first appears in the records of Stafford County, VA. His departure from Scotland may have occurred as early as the mid 1740's. It's believed James landed somewhere at a coastal port in northeastern Virginia at one of the early towns in the Northern Neck region.

The first record known in the Virginia Colony for James Collie is his marriage on 21 February 1751 to Ann Cornwell. They married in Stafford County. According to Bible records, Ann was born 5 September 1726. Her father was Charles Cornwell.

In early 1766 James Collie, his wife Ann and family left Stafford County. They traveled some 150 miles southwest and settled in the western part of Halifax County. That part of Halifax County became part of a new county in 1766, known as Pittsylvania County.

James and Ann's children were William, b.ca.1752; Charles, b. 25 Jan 1756; Ellen, b. 1758; Mary, b. before 1761, m. 1 Nov 1781 to James Witcher in Pittsylvania Co. James' parents were William Witcher and Anne Majors; James II, b. 29 Sep 1763; John, b. between 1764 and 1770; Peggy, b. between 1765 and 1770, m. 2 Feb 1797 to John Jennings.

Sir Thomas Boleyn Famous memorial

Birth: c.1477 Blickling, Broadland District, Norfolk, England
Death: 12 Mar 1539 (aged 61-62) Hever, Sevenoaks District, Kent, England
Burial: St Peter Churchyard, Hever, Sevenoaks District, Kent, England
Memorial #: 12262
Bio:
English Diplomat and Politician. He held the titles of the 1st Earl of Wiltshire and 1st Earl of Ormond during the Tudor era and is best remembered as the father of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII of England as well as the maternal grandfather of Queen Elizabeth I. He was born into a wealthy family around 1477 at Hever Castle in Hever, Kent, England. Little is known of his early life. Sometime prior to 1499, he married Lady Elizabeth Howard, the oldest daughter of Thomas Howard, the 2nd Duke of Norfolk. In 1503 he helped escort Margaret Tudor, the daughter of King Henry VII of England north for her marriage to James IV of Scotland. In 1509 he was created a Knight of the Bath at Henry VIII's coronation. In 1512 he was appointed as one of the three English envoys to the Low Countries (Belgium and the Netherlands) which brought him into contact with the regent Archduchess Margaret of Austria. They both spoke French and Latin and got along well enough for her to accept his daughter Anne as a maid of honor. From 1518 until 1521 he was the English ambassador to France, where he was involved in arrangements for the "Field of Cloth of Gold" meeting between Henry VIII and the new French King Francis I in 1520. From 1521 to 1523 he served as the English envoy to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. In 1523 he was invested as a Knight of the Garter. In 1525 King Henry VIII became enamored with Anne and began pursuing her, even though he was married to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Coincidentally, her father was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Rochford in June 1525. As Henry VIII's infatuation for Anne intensified, so did her father's titles. Henry arranged for the main claimant to the earldom of Ormond, Piers Butler to renounce all his claims to the titles in 1529 and was rewarded for his generosity by being created Earl of Ossory five days later. The same year, Boleyn was part of an envoy to a meeting of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Pope Clement VII, to seek support for the annulment of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. In 1530 Boleyn was appointed Lord Privy Seal in 1530 and in 1532, his daughter Anne was granted a peerage, being created Marquess of Pembroke in her own right, before marrying Henry the following year and becoming queen consort. In 1536, when Anne was arrested for high treason and found guilty and executed, he was disgraced and stripped of most of his titles and he returned to Hever Castle where he died three years later at the age of 61 or 62. He was portrayed by actor Sir Michael Hordern in "Anne of the Thousand Days" (1969), by actor Benjamin Whitrow in "Henry VIII," and by actors Jack Shepherd and Mark Rylance in the 2003 and 2008 film versions of "The Other Boleyn Girl" respectively. In the 2007 Showtime series "The Tudors," his role was played by actor Nick Dunning.

Elizabeth Fitzalan

Birth: 1371
Arundel
West Sussex, England
Death: Jul. 8, 1425
Wighill
North Yorkshire, England

Elizabeth Fitzalan Duchess of Norfolk, was the daughter of Richard Fitz-Alan, Earl of Arundel, and Elizabeth de Bohun. Married Sir William Montague; Thomas Mowbry, Duke of Norfolk; Sir Robert Goushill; and Sir Gerald Usflete. Elizabeth Fitz-Alan was descended from King Edward I through her mother's ancestry, and Edmund Plantagenet through her father's line. She is buried in a tomb in Hoveringham Church in Nottinghamshire next to her third husband Sir Robert Goushill who died at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. Robert Goushill was knighted by King Henry IV the day of the battle. Wounded, he was murdered by his servant on the Shrewsbury battlefield for his valuables. The servant was later identified and hung for his crime. Many Americans including Franklin D. Roosevelt can trace Plantagenet ancestry through Elizabeth Fitz-Alan's daughters Joan and Elizabeth Goushill.

Robert Goushill

Birth: 1350
Hoveringham
Nottinghamshire, England
Death: Jun. 21, 1403
Shrewsbury
Shropshire, England

Robert Goushill was the son and heir of Sir Nicholas Goushill of Hoveringham.
Robert Goushill would marry the widowed Elizabeth Fitz-Alan, Duchess of Norfolk, in the latter part of 1400 or early 1401 without license. On August 19, 1401, King Henry IV seized the lands of Elizabeth, late widow of Thomas Mowbray, for marrying Robert Goushill without license. On September 28, 1401, Henry IV would pardon Robert Goushill esquire and Elizabeth, late wife of Thomas, duke of Norfolk, for their trespass for inter-marrying without license and that they shall have restitution of all lands assigned to her in dower with the issues from the time of their marriage. Joan Goushill, the 1st daughter of Robert and Elizabeth, would be born in 1401, and a 2nd daughter Elizabeth Goushill would be born in 1402. Many present day descendants of these two daughters trace their ancestry to the Plantagenet Kings of England through Joan Goushill who married Sir Thomas Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley, and Elizabeth Goushill who married Sir Robert Wingfield of Letheringham, Suffolk
Sir Robet Goushill was knighted by King Henry IV at the battle of Shrewsbury on July 21,1403.

Fulk V. Of Anjou

Birth: 1092
Death: Nov. 10, 1143

French Nobility. King of Jerusalem, Count of Anjou, Touraine and Maine, also known as Fulk V "The Young". He was the only son of Fulk IV "Le Rechin" of Anjou and his fifth wife Bertrade de Montfort, who left her husband to become first mistress and later wife of King Philipp. He succeeded his father in 1109 and continued the war with Maine that his father had started. He invaded it and in 1110 married Eremburge of Maine to strengthen his reign there. From this marriage he was father of Geoffrey, Isabel (wife of William "The Atheling"), Elias II, Count of Maine and Sibylle, (later wife of William Clito of Normandy and Count Thierry of Flanders). He reorganized the administration and signed peace settlements with the counties that surrounded his territory. In 1120 he joined the crusade where he made a name for himself, as being a good warrior. In 1127 he received a message from the king of Jerusalem, Baldwin II, who proposed a marriage between Fulk and Baldwins daughter and heiress, Melisende. He abdicated in Anjou in favor for his son Geoffrey and married Melisende in 1129. Baldwin gave him the cities Acre and Tyre. Melisende gave birth to a son who was named Baldwin and that was supposed to reign with his parents. After the kings death in 1131 they ruled together, but Fulk soon assumed control of the government and excluded her entirely. As he was also regent of Antioch he married the heiress Constance to Raymond of Poitiers, uncle of Eleonore of Aquitaine. The Count of Jaffa, Hugh II, a cousin of Melisende sided with her and rebelled against him. They later signed a peace contract and Hugh was exiled from the kingdom for 3 years. In 1135 the queen's party took over the government and Fulk's supporters fled. The couple reconciled later and she gave birth to a second son, Amalric. Fulk was able to strengthen the borders in the north and south and built several castles to secure the kingdom against the Muslims under Zengi and the Egyptians. He died during a hunting accident, when his horse stumbled, fell and landed on top of him. (bio by: Lutetia)

Joan Geneville

Birth: Feb. 2, 1285
Ludlow
Shropshire, England
Death: Oct. 19, 1356, England

This memorial is dedicated to my ancestor Joan de Geneville, 2nd Baroness Geneville, Countess of March.
She was the wife of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, lover of Isabella of France, Queen consort of King Edward II of England. She succeeded to the title of suo jure 2nd Baroness Geneville on October 21, 1314 upon the death of her grandfather, Sir Geoffrey de Geneville, 1st Baron Geneville.
She is also known as Jeanne de Joinville
Joan was born on February 2, 1286 at Ludlow Castle in Shropshire. She was the eldest child of Sir Piers de Geneville, of Trim Castle and Ludlow, and Jeanne of Lusignan. She had two younger sisters, Matilda and Beatrice who both became nuns at Aconbury Priory.
When her father died in Ireland shortly before June 1292, Joan became one of the wealthiest and most eligible heiresses in the Welsh Marches, with estates that included the town and castle of Ludlow, and much land in Shropshire, as well as a generous portion of County Meath in Ireland. She was due to inherit these upon the death of her grandfather, but in 1308, Baron Geneville conveyed most of his Irish estates to Joan and her husband Roger Mortimer. The baron died on October 21, 1314 at the House of the Friars Preachers at Trim, and Joan subsequently succeeded him, becoming the suo jure 2nd Baroness Geneville.
In 1301, Joan married Roger Mortimer, the son of Edmund Mortimer, 2nd Baron Wigmore and Margaret de Fiennes. He was on the Council of Ordainers, which was commissioned with the purpose to restrict the power of King Edward II and reform his household. Together Roger and Joan had twelve children. One of them being Edmund.
Following her husband's execution, as the wife of a traitor, Joan was imprisoned in Hampshire and her children taken into custody. Her lands were only restored to her in 1336 after King Edward III granted her a full pardon for her husband's crimes. Joan de Geneville, Baroness Geneville, the widowed Countess of March, died on October 19, 1356 at the age of seventy. She was buried at Wigmore Abbey beside her husband. The Abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and only the ruins remain to this day.
Joan's numerous direct descendants include the current British Royal Family, and Sarah Ferguson; she was also the ancestress of Sir Winston Churchill, George Washington, Anne Boleyn and her sister Mary Boleyn.

Death: 7 Sep 1151 (aged 38) Chateau-du-Loir, Departement de la Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France
Burial: Cathédrale Saint Julien-Le Mans, Le Mans, Departement de la Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France

Bio:
French Noble. The Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy from the house Gatinais, his habit of wearing a sprig of broom plant (planta genesta in Latin) on his hat is the origin of the name "Plantagenet." He succeeded his father Fulk V "the young" as Count of Anjou, Maine and Touraine in 1128, when Fulk went to the Holy Land to marry Melisende, daughter of King Baldwin II. of Jerusalem. Geoffrey married Empress Maude, the widow of Emperor Heinrich V and daughter of Henry I. of England two years later. The marriage was unhappy, partly because Maude felt humiliated that she, an empress, was married to a mere count. Their first son, Henry, was born five years after the wedding. Two more sons, Geoffrey and Guillaume followed in the next three years. He fought against King Stephen and conquered the Normandy from him and was from 1144 on Duke of Normandy. Geoffrey and Henry went to Paris to pledge their alliance to their liege King Louis VII in 1151. There, Henry met the Queen Eleonore for the first time, and apparently fell in love, which would later result in one of the biggest scandals of their time. During the return to his territory he became sick, with high fever and died 25 miles south-east of Le Mans.

Virginia Ilene Hibbs Hardman

Birth: 21 Dec 1931 Dawson Springs, Hopkins County, Kentucky, USA
Death: 15 Apr 2019 (aged 87) Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado, USA
Burial: Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Denver County, Colorado, USA
Plot: Section W, Site 837
Memorial #: 198414902
Bio:
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents Walter & Lora Hibbs, her husband Howard Wayne Hardman, a son Brian Tait Hardman, 1 brother Ernest Ray Hibbs and his wife Elizabeth Hibbs.Virginia was a committed woman…to her husband, her children, and most importantly to her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. Virginia was always writing down notes, thoughts, poems, verses, scriptures. While going through her papers one note was found while she was listing her surgeries … when she reached the year 1980 she noted: “now found God, March of 1980, Happy Happy, All the Glory to God. Another note stated: “Making Memories” Thanksgiving Dinner 1999.Virginia stated to one of her children: “It is an honor to be your all’s mother”. This was her attitude & spirit. Giving Giving Giving. Virginia gave sacrificially for her family so they could enjoy life to its fullest.Virginia was a member of Heritage Pentecostal Church and enjoyed being an usher, singing in the choir, working the altar and other activities at the church. She loved to pray, worship & praise her God. She was always passing out church cards and inviting people to church. She enjoyed testifying of the goodness of God and all the great things God had done including healings and miracles not only in her life but others. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, & gardening but her true passion was spending time with her family & friends.Virginia worked very hard all her life starting in high school at Hamby's Well in Dawson Springs, Kentucky, behind the soda counter as a ‘soda jerk’. Always employed or helping her husband with many home businesses until she was forced to retired from Spectrum Healthcare. Virginia always wanted to be a doctor that is why she enjoyed her job so much at Spectrum Healthcare where she credentialed physicians. When she was laid off she was asked, “are you going to retire”? She answered: “oh no I need to find a job”Virginia survived many brushes with death including life after death experiences. God always brought her through it all (1972 & 2009). Virginia described the 1972 experience as “traveling up a long dark tunnel, on and on and on and on until suddenly there was this bright light at the end of the tunnel.”Virginia lived in KY, MO, GA, AR, TX, WVA, & Germany, settling in Colorado Springs in 1966.Virginia leaves a cherished lifetime of memories to her children, Deborah Webb, Cindy Christian, Natalie Lederle, Bradford Hardman, Six Grandchildren, Four Great Grandchildren, Three sons in law, her brother Amplias Owen Hibbs and his wife Dottie Hibbs and nieces and nephews and their families.

Joan of Wales

Birth: 1188
Death: Feb. 2, 1237
Holyhead, Wales

Joan (Joanna) was an illegitimate daughter of King John of England and a woman named Clemence Pinel. She should not be confused with her legitimate half-sister Joan, Queen Consort of Scotland.
Little is known about her early life; she was possibly born before her father, King John of England, married his first wife in 1189. Her mother's name is known only from Joan's obituary in the Tewkesbury Annals, where she is mysteriously called "Regina Clementina" (Queen Clemence). Joan seems to have spent her childhood in France, as King John had her brought to the Kingdom of England from Normandy in preparation for her wedding in December 1203 at 15 years of age or so.
Joan married Llywelyn the Great between December 1203 and October 1204.
In April 1226 Joan obtained a papal decree from Pope Honorius III, declaring her legitimate on the basis that her parents had not been married to others at the time of her birth, but without giving her a claim to the English throne.
At Easter 1230, William de Braose, 10th Baron Abergavenny, who was Llywelyn's nominal prisoner at the time, was discovered together with Joan in Llywelyn's bedchamber. William de Braose was hanged, probably at Crogen, on 2 May 1230. Joan was placed under house arrest for twelve months. She was forgiven by Llywelyn, and restored as wife and princess. Joan was never called Princess of Wales, but, in Welsh, "Lady of Wales". She died at the royal home, Garth Celyn, Aber Garth Celyn, on the north coast of Gwynedd in 1237. Llywelyn's great grief at her death is recorded; he founded a Franciscan friary on the seashore at Llanfaes, opposite the royal home, in her honour. The friary was consecrated in 1240, shortly before Llywelyn died. It was closed down in 1537 by Henry VIII of England during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Joan's stone coffin can be seen in Beaumaris parish church, Anglesey. Above the empty coffin is a slate panel inscribed: "This plain sarcophagus, (once dignified as having contained the remains of Joan, daughter of King John, and consort of Llywelyn ap Iowerth, Prince of North Wales, who died in the year 1237), having been conveyed from the Friary of Llanfaes, and alas, used for many years as a horsewatering trough, was rescued from such an indignity and placed here for preseravation as well as to excite serious meditation on the transitory nature of all sublunary distinctions."
Joan and Llywelyn had at least two children together:
1. Elen ferch Llywelyn (Helen or Ellen) (1207-1253), married (1) John the Scot, Earl of Chester and (2) Robert II de Quincy
2. Dafydd ap Llywelyn (c. 1215-1246) married Isabella de Braose, died at Garth Celyn, Aber Garth Celyn, (Aber).
Some of Llywelyn's other recorded children may also have been Joan's:
1. Gwladus Ddu (1206-1251), married (1) Reginald de Braose and (2) Ralph Mortimer.
2. Susanna, who was sent to England as a hostage in 1228.
3. Margaret, who married Sir John de Braose, the grandson of William de Braose, 7th Baron Abergavenny and had issue and secondly Walter III de Clifford

Louis VIII Capet

Birth: 5 Sep 1187 Paris, City of Paris, Île-de-France, France
Death: 8 Nov 1226 (aged 39) Montpensier, Departement du Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne, France
Burial: Saint Denis Basilique, Saint-Denis, Departement de Seine-Saint-Denis, Île-de-France, France
Memorial #: 66211839
Bio:
Louis VIII the Lion, was the son of Philip II Augustus, King of the Franks and Isabelle of Hainaut. Louis was the King of France from 1223 to 1226 and a member of the house of Capet, as he was a direct descendant of Hughes Capet circa 940-996.

His mother died in 1190, giving birth to twins sons, and Louis inherited her dowry and the title of Count of Artois, which he held until his father died, and the title reverted to the crown when Louis became King of France in 1223.

After lengthy negotiations between his father, Phillip, King of France and John Lackland, King of England, and as a condition of the Treaty of Le Goulet between these two, Louis was married on 23 May 1200, at the age of 12, to Richard's sister's daughter, Blanche of Castile, also 12 at the time and born in Spain. Her grandmother, Eleanor of Aquitane, would cross the Pyrenees, bringing the girl from Spain to France. The marriage was finally consummated in 1205 and Blanche would bear the first of thirteen children.

When the English Barons rebelled against King John Lackland of England, they offered the throne to Louis, who was able to land at the Isle of Thanet with an army in May of 1216 and march to London with very little resistance. There, Louis was proclaimed king by his supporters, including King Alexander II of Scotland. Louis captured Winchester in June, but when King John died in October, the barons turned their favors to John's son, Henry III, even thought he was only nine years old. English forces led by William Marshall finally forced Louis to the Treaty of Lambeth in September of 1217, Louis promising not to attack England, agreeing that he really never was king, and Louis was given a compensation of 10,000 marks.

King Philip died on July 14, 1223, Louis was coronated August 6th at the cathedral at Reims. Louis would continue to battle his father's enemies, resulting in the capture of Avignon and Languedoc, yet he reversed his father's ruling of usury for Jews, creating havoc for both the church and the barons who were in disagreement as some were profiting from the lending. The conflicts would continue until Louis's death on November 8th, 1226 during his travels from the chateau at Montpensier, Puy-de-Dome Auvergne back to Paris. His son, Louis IX succeeded him on the throne.
