Louis VI

Birth: Dec. 1, 1081
Death: Aug. 1, 1137

French Royalty. Born in Paris, Louis was the only son and heir of King Philip I and his wife Bertha of Holland. He was called "The Fat" (Le Gros) for obvious reasons. Due to his father's failing health, Louis held the reigns of power long before Philip's death on 29 July 1108. Much of his 29-year reign was spent fighting French barons over the crown lands, or the English King Henry I over the possession of Normandy. Louis married Lucienne de Rochefort in 1104, and they had one daughter, Isabelle. Louis had the marriage annulled three years later. He then married Adelaide de Maurienne, a princess of Savoy, on 3 August 1115. They had eight children. Louis was the first of the Capetian dynasty rulers to make lasting inroads toward centralizing royal power in France. He died of dysentery at the castle of Bethisy-Saint-Pierre at the age of 55. He was succeeded by his son Louis (the Young), who was better suited to, and intended for, a monastic life rather than the throne. (bio by: VampireRed)

Matilda “Empress Maud” of England Famous memorial

Birth: 7 Feb 1102 Sutton Courtenay, Vale of White Horse District, Oxfordshire, England
Death: 10 Sep 1167 (aged 65) Rouen, Departement de la Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France
Burial: Rouen Cathedral, Rouen, Departement de la Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France
Memorial #: 8619917

Bio:
German Queen, Holy Roman Empress, Queen of England, Countess of Anjou and Maine. Only daughter of Henry I. and Matilda Dunkeld, daughter of Malcolm III. (Ceann-Mor). Matilda and her brother William were possibly twins. She was betrothed to Heinrich V. in April 1110. On January 7, 1114 she married the Emperor. She was 12 and her husband was 32 years old. She was crowned Queen of the Germans on July 25, 1110. The pair visited Rome in 1117 where they were crowned in a ceremony led only by an Archbishop (Heinrich was already crowned in 1111 by the pope) but she used the title of an Empress her whole life. The Emperor died in 1125 and she had to return to England because her brother had died and she was now her father's only hope for the continuation of his dynasty. Henry I. named Matilda his heir in January 1127. The baron of England had to swear that they would make her queen after her father's death. On August 26, 1127 she married the eleven years younger Geoffrey V. Plantagenet (qv), Count of Anjou in Le Mans. They soon started to fight with each other and Geoffrey sent her to Rouen. They reconciled in 1131 and on 5 March 1133 she gave birth to their first son Henry, who later became Henry II. of England. When Henry I. died in 1135 she was supposed to succeed him but her cousin Stephen of Blois was crowned instead. That was the begin of a civil war that lasted 18 years. In 1138 first her half-brother Robert of Gloucester and later her uncle David I. of Scotland invaded England to unseat Stephen from the throne and install Matilda. Stephen defeated David at the Battle of the Standard. Matilda herself landed in England in the following year. She was able to take Stephen prisoner in 1141 but had to release him in exchange for Robert of Gloucester. In March 1141 she it went to London, because of her arrogant behavior she was thrown out of the city some days later before her formal coronation could happen. The war luck was now more on Stephens side and she had to retire to the Normandy. On August 10, 1153 Stephens son Eustache died. Stephen became depressed and signed the Treaty of Winchester in December 1153. In this treaty Henry was named heir to Stephen bypassing Stephens son William and agreeing that Stephen should remain king for the rest of his life. He wasn't able to enjoy the following peace for a long time he died in October 1154. Maud spend the rest of her life in the Normandy where she administered the her sons possessions. She died in Notre Dame de Prés near Rouen and was buried in the Abbey church of Bec-Hellouin. Her body was transferred to the Cathedral of Rouen in 1847.

Isabella of Angoulême Famous memorial

Birth: 19 Feb 1186 Angoulême, Departement de la Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France
Death: 4 Jun 1246 (aged 60) Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, Departement de Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France
Burial*: Fontevraud Abbey, Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, Departement de Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France
Memorial #: 6436

Bio:
English royalty, Queen consort of King John. She was the only daughter of Aymer Taillefer, count of Angouleme and Alix de Courtenay. Isabelle was renowned for her beauty, and is sometimes called the "Helen" of the middle ages. She was betrothed to Hugh IX de Lusignan when John chose her to be his second wife. They were married on August 24, 1200, at Bordeaux, when she was only about 12. The marriage was probably not a very happy one, as Isabelle had a fiery character to match John's and the age difference was considerable. They had five children, including the heir, the future Henry III. As a result of the marriage, King Philip II of France confiscated all of John's French lands, and an armed conflict ensued. King John died in 1216, and the young widow returned to France. She married Hugh X de Lusignan, count de la March, the son of her former betrothed. They had 11 children. Isabelle was accused of plotting against the French king in 1244, and fled to Fontevrault Abbey, where she died at the age of about 60.

Humphrey de Bohun

Birth: 1249
Essex, England
Death: Dec. 31, 1298
Pleshey
Essex, England

7th Erl of Hereford, 8th Earl of Essex. Baron of Pleshy, Essex. Baron of Kingston, Herefordshire. Hereditary Constable of England and Deputy of England.

Son and heir of Sir Humphrey de Bohun V and Eleanor de Brewes. Grandson of Sir Humphrey de Bohun and Maud de Eu, William de Brewes and Eve Marsha, daughter of William Marshall, 4th Earl of Pembroke and regent to King Henry III.

Husband of Maud de Fiennes, daughter of Ingram de Fiennes and Isabelle Conde, daughter of Jacques, married 1275. They had one son, Sir Humphrey, Earl of Hereford and Essex, who would marry Elizabeth of England, the daughter of Edward I, King of England, and widow of John Holand.

Humphrey was an heir to his grandfather as his father died in 1265, a prisoner at Beeston Castle. He was granted seisin of his mother's lands at aged 16(including one quarter of one third of the barony of Miles Gloucester, the lordships and manors of Hay, Huntingdon, Haverford and Brecknock) but the lands were overseen by the king until 1270. Humphrey was not able to take possession of Brecon and the lordship of Clare from the Welsh until 1276.

Humphrey was known for his fierce defense of his lands, and the close relationship he had with his local folk. He was active in the Welsh wars, the opposition to King Edward over the 1297 Charters of the Magna Carta, and spent most his career recapturing Marcher lands from Llywelyn Gruffydd. He was opposed to other Marcher lords, Gilbert de Clare, the Earl of Gloucester, and Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk. Edward I interfered when the conflicts threatened civil war, and the wars were turned towards Scotland with their defeat at Stirling Bridge.

Humphrey died at Pleshey Castle, and was buried alongside his wife who had pre-deceased him.

Maud Braose

Birth: 1224
Brecon, Wales
Death: Mar. 23, 1300
Wigmore
Herefordshire, England

Maud de Braose, Baroness Wigmore was a noble heiress and a member of the powerful de Braose family which held many lordships and domains in the Welsh Marches. She was the wife of Roger Mortimer, 1st Baron Wigmore, a celebrated soldier and Marcher baron. A staunch Royalist during the Second Barons' War, it was she who devised the plan to rescue Prince Edward (the future King Edward I of England) from the custody of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester.
Maud was born in Wales in 1224, the second eldest daughter and co-heiress of Marcher lord William de Braose, 10th Baron Abergavenny and Eva Marshal.
Maud had three sisters, Isabella, wife of Prince Dafydd ap Llywelyn; Eleanor, wife of Humphrey de Bohun; and Eve, wife of William de Cantelou.
Her paternal grandparents were Reginald de Braose, 9th Baron Abergavenny and Grecia de Briwere. Her maternal grandparents were William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke, daughter of Strongbow and Aoife of Leinster.
On 2 May 1230, when Maud was just six years old, her father was hanged by orders of Llewelyn the Great, Prince of Wales for alleged adultery with the latter's wife, Joan,Lady of Wales.
Maud was described as beautiful and nimble-witted. During the Second Barons' War, she also proved to be a staunch Royalist. It was Maud herself who devised a plan for the escape of Prince Edward after he had been taken hostage by Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester following the Battle of Lewes. On 28 May 1265, when the Prince was held in custody at Hereford Castle, Maud sent a party of horsemen to spirit him away to Wigmore Castle while he was out in the open fields, some distance from the castle, taking exercise by racing horses with his unsuspecting guardians as she had instructed him to do in the messages she had smuggled to him previously. At a signal from one of the horsemen, Edward galloped off to join the party of his liberators, where they escorted him to Wigmore Castle, twenty miles away, where Maud was waiting. She gave the Prince refreshments before sending him on to Ludlow Castle where he met up with the Earl of Gloucester who had defected to the side of the King.
At the Battle of Evesham on 4 August 1265, Maud's husband Roger fought on the side of Prince Edward, and personally killed Simon de Montfort. As a reward, Roger was given de Montfort's severed head and other parts of his anatomy. Roger sent these gruesome trophies home to Wigmore Castle as a gift to Maud. She held a great feast that very night to celebrate the victory. De Montfort's head was raised in the Great Hall, still attached to the point of the lance.
In 1300, Maud is recorded as having presented to a vacant benefice in the Stoke Bliss parish church in Herefordshire, its advowson having originally belonged to the Mortimers, but was bequeathed to Limebrook Priory by Roger. Maud died on an unknown date sometime between 1300 and 23 March 1301. She was buried in Wigmore Abbey. Her husband Roger had died on 30 October 1282.
In 1247 Maud married Roger Mortimer of Wigmore. As the eldest son of Ralph de Mortimer and his Welsh wife, Princess Gwladys Ddu, Roger was himself a scion of another important Marcher family, and had succeeded his father in 1246, upon the latter's death. He was created 1st Baron Wigmore on an unknown date. Maud was seven years his senior, and they had been betrothed since childhood. On the occasion of their marriage, the honour of Radnor passed from the de Braose to the Mortimer family. Her marriage portion was some land at Tetbury which she inherited from her grandfather, Reginald de Braose. She also had inherited the Manor of Charlton sometime before her marriage. Roger and Maud's principal residence was the Mortimers' family seat, Wigmore Castle in Herefordshire.
Roger and Maud together had seven children:
Ralph Mortimer (died before 10 August 1274), Sheriff of Shropshire and Staffordshire.
Edmund Mortimer, 2nd Baron Wigmore (1251-17 July 1304), married Margaret de Fiennes, daughter of William II de Fiennes and Blanche de Brienne, by whom he had issue, including Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March.
Isabella Mortimer, married firstly, John Fitzalan, 7th Earl of Arundel, by whom she had issue; she married secondly, Ralph d'Arderne; she married thirdly, Robert de Hastang.
Margaret Mortimer (died September 1297), married Robert de Vere, 6th Earl of Oxford, by whom she had one son.
Roger Mortimer of Chirk (died 3 August 1336 Tower of London), married Lucy de Wafre, by whom he had one son. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for having participated in the rebellion of Thomas of Lancaster in 1321.
Geoffrey Mortimer (died before 1282), he was unmarried.
William Mortimer (died before June 1297), married as her first husband, Hawise de Muscegros.
All the monarchs of England from 1413, as well as Mary, Queen of Scots, were directly descended from Maud, as is the current British Royal Family. Queen consorts Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were also notable descendants of Maud de Braose through the latter's daughter Isabella, Countess of Arundel.

•Name: John Garrett
•Sex: M
•Birth: ABT 1750 in VA
•Death: BEF 14 APR 1806 in Williamson Co, TN
•Note:
The #1 candidate who could be the father of George W. Garrett & Caleb Garrett is John Garrett, Sr.:

John Garrett, Sr. (1750-1806) has not been confirmed as the father of George W. Garrett (1791-1870) and Caleb Garrett (1795-1841), who are confirmed to be brothers. There are several data matches that point to John Garrett, Sr. as their father:

1) John Garrett, Sr. moved from Prince Edward Co, VA (possibly via Jefferson Co, TN) to Nashville, Davidson Co, TN about 1797; George W. Garrett was born in VA in 1791 and was serving in the militia in Nashville, Davidson Co, TN in 1812.

2) John Garrett, Sr. died in Williamson Co, TN in 1806; George W. Garrett was married in Franklin, Williamson Co, TN in 1817; Caleb Garrett lived about 40 of his 46 years in Franklin, Williamson Co, TN.

3) George W. Garrett named his 1st son John Garrett; John Garrett, the son of George W. Garrett, named his 1st son Thomas and his 2nd son John. (John Garrett, Sr. had sons named Thomas and John.)

4) George W. Garrett's second son (Caleb) named his first son John Garrett.

5) George Garrett (#894) and Thomas Garrett (#901) are the only persons with Garrett surname in the 1812 Davidson Co, TN Tax List that are listed as "In Nashville & Vicinity".

6) Jacob Garrett (1730-c1798) has been confirmed to be the father of John Garrett, Sr. (1750-1806).

Note: It should be taken into account that minors many times were not named in a Last Will and Testament because they had no legal standing; and it should be taken into account as well that when some minors were named, then usually all "minors" were named.

He bought 300 acres of land in Davidson County from Meshack Hale in 1797 for five hundred dollars. Bellevue

The original log part of this house was built around 1818 by Abram DeMoss and named for the house his father, Louis DeMoss, built in 1797 overlooking the Harpeth River a mile southwest. In time the name was given to the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad depot and to the U.S. Post Office. Thus the Bellevue community owes its name to this historic site.
Location: Bellevue, 7306 Harding Road

(The original log part of this house is now thought to have been built by John Garrett. The left front section was built by Thomas Harding around 1802. And the right section which connected the two sections of the house was built around 1820 by Abram and Betsy DeMoss. It was named for the house his father, Lewis DeMoss, built around 1800 overlooking the Harpeth River a mile southeast.)

Berenguela Of Castile

Birth: Jan. 1, 1180
Segovia
Castilla y Leon, Spain
Death: Nov. 8, 1246
Burgos
Castilla y Leon, Spain

Queen of Castile (1217)
Queen Consort of León (1197-1204)
Regent of Castile

Eldest daughter of King Alfonso VIII of Castile and Eleanor Plantagenet. Paternal granddaughter of King Sancho III of Castile and Blanca Ramírez of Navarre. Maternal granddaughter of King Henry II of England and Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine.

Berenguela was first betrothed to Conrad II, Duke of Swabia, before 1196, but he was murdered before their marriage could be solemnized.

She married King Alfonso IX of León in 1197, and together they had five children. Their marriage was annulled, however, in 1204 by Pope Innocent III because they were too closely related to each other.

After the annulment, the Queen and her children returned to Castile, where she thwarted her former husband's attempts to disinherit her children.

When her father died in 1214, she became Regent of Castile for her young brother Enrique I, and administered the government in his name.

Enrique was accidentally killed in 1217, and because he died without issue, Berenguela became Queen of Castile in her own right. She was thirty-seven years old at the time of her accession, and abdicated the same year in favor of her eldest son, who became Ferdinand III of Castile.

Following her abdication, Berenguela served as her son's adviser and retired to the Abbey de Santa María la Real de las Huelgas, where she died and was buried in 1246.

Lady Elizabeth Tilney Howard

Birth: 1446
Ashwellthorpe
Norfolk, England
Death: Apr. 4, 1497
Thetford
Norfolk, England

Lady Elizabeth Tilney Bourgchier Howard

Countess of Surrey, Lady-in-waiting to Queen consort Elizabeth Woodville, Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen's daughter, Elizabeth of York, joint godmother to Princess Margaret Tudor.

Daughter of Sir Frederick Tilney, of Ashwellthorpe, Norfolk, and Boston, Lincolnshire, and Elizabeth Cheney of Fen Ditton, Cambridgeshire. Granddaughter of Sir Philip Tilney and Isabel Thorpe, Lawrence Cheyne, Esq., High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Elizabeth Cokayne.

Wife of Sir Humphrey Bourgchier, son of sir John Bourgchier and Margery Berners. They were married by settlement dated 11 April 1451 and had one son and two daughters:
Sir John, Lord Berners
Anne, wife of Sir Thomas Fiennes, Lord Dacre
Margaret, wife of Sir Thomas Bryan

Sir Humphrey was killed at the Battle of Barnet on 14 April 1471, fighting on the Yorkist side.

Secondly, Elizabeth became the wife of Sir Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, son of John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, by his first wife, Katherine, the daughter of William Moleyns. They were married 30 April 1472, as arranged by King Edward IV. Sir Thomas was the also son of Elizabeth's son's guardian after the death of his father. They had at least nine children including:
John
Sir William, Lord of Effingham
Sir Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk
Edmund, father of Queen Katherine Howard
Anne, wife of John de Vere, Earl of Oxford
Dorothy, wife of Edward Bridgwater
Elizabeth, wife of Sir Henry Radcliffe, Earl of Sussex, mother of Anne Boleyn
Katherine, wife of Rhys ap Griffith and Henry Daubeney

Elizabeth was born at Ashwellthorpe Hall before 1445, an only child. Her father died before 1449, and her mother remarried to Sir John Say of Boxbbourne Speaker of the House of Commons, and had three sons and four more daughters. Elizabeth became a cousin to King Henry VIII's wives, Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard. Elizabeth was also the co-heiress to the manors of Fisherwick and Sheffield in Walsall, Staffordshire by right of her ancestry to Sir Roger Hilary, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas.

During her marriage to Sir Humphrey, she became a lady in waiting, and carried the train of Queen Elizabeth at her coronation at Westminster Abbey in May of 1465, accompanied the Queen into sanctuary when the King was forced from the throne, and was present at the birth of future King Edward V.

When Sir Thomas was wounded at the Battle of Bosworth and imprisoned in the Tower, his dukedom of Norfolk was forfeited, but Elizabeth was able to keep her own rights. There are letters from Elizabeth to John Paston written from the Isle of Sheppey, with complaints of claims on her rights and trouble with an interring aides to King Henry VII. In December of 1485 she was living in London and closed to her still imprisoned husband.

Finally, in Nov 1487, her husband was released, his earldon and estates restored, and he entered the service of King Henry VII. Both Thomas and ELizabeth attended the coronation of Elizabeth of York, who requested Elizabeth as her Lady of the Chamber.

Elizabeth died 04 April 1497 and was buried in the nun's choir of the Convent of the Minoresses of Aldgate. Her will left instructions to distribute her money to the poor of Whitechapel and Hackney. Sir Thomas Howard would receive licence to marry her cousin, Agnes Tilney, who had six more children.

She was known for her formidable temper, and William was apparently faithful to her. She had 9 children, seven of whom survived. She died in Normandy after a long illness, and was buried in the abbey she founded. It is reported that William became tyrannical after her death. (bio by: VampireRed)
