Sybil de Neufmarche

Birth: 1100
Brecon
Powys, Wales
Death: unknown
Hempsted
Gloucestershire, England

Sibyl de Neufmarché, Countess of Hereford, suo jure Lady of Brecknock was a Cambro-Norman noblewoman, heiress to one of the most substantial fiefs in the Welsh Marches. The great-granddaughter of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, king of Wales, Sibyl was also connected to the nobility of England and Normandy.
Sibyl inherited the titles and lands of her father, Bernard de Neufmarché, Lord of Brecon, after her mother, Nest ferch Osbern, had declared her brother Mahel to have been illegitimate. Most of these estates passed to Sibyl's husband, Miles de Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford, as her dowry. Their marriage had been arranged personally by King Henry I of England in the spring of 1121. Sibyl, with her extensive lands, was central to the King's plans of consolidating Anglo-Norman power in south-east Wales by the merging of her estates with those of Miles, his loyal subject on whom he relied to implement Crown policy.
As an adult, Sibyl lived through King Stephen's turbulent reign, known to history as the Anarchy, in which her husband played a pivotal role. Following Miles' accidental death in 1143, Sibyl entered a religious life at Llanthony Secunda Priory, Gloucestershire, England, which she had endowed up to six years previously. Sibyl is buried at the priory, founded by Miles in 1136.
Sibyl was born in about 1100 in Brecon Castle, Brecon, Wales, the only daughter of Marcher Lord Bernard de Neufmarché, Lord of Brecon, and Nest ferch Osbern. Nest was the daughter of Osbern FitzRichard and Nest ferch Gruffydd. Sybil's maternal great-grandparents were Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, king of Wales, and Ealdgyth (Edith of Mercia). Ealdgyth, the daughter of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia, was briefly Queen consort of England by her second marriage to Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, who was killed at the Battle of Hastings.
Sibyl's father, Bernard, was born at the castle of Le Neuf-Marché-en-Lions, on the frontier between Normandy and Beauvais. Bernard was a knight who had fought under English kings William I, William Rufus and Henry I. According to historian Lynn H Nelson, Bernard de Neufmarché was "the first of the original conquerors of Wales". The name Neufmarché, Novo Mercato in Latin, is anglicised into 'Newmarket' or 'Newmarch'
Sibyl and Miles had eight children:
Margaret of Hereford (1122/1123- 6 April 1187), married Humphrey II de Bohun, by whom she had issue. She received the office of constable of England and exercised lordship of Hereford as a widow until her death.
Roger Fitzmiles, 2nd Earl of Hereford (before 1125- 22 September 1155). Roger's marriage settlement with Cecily FitzJohn (her first marriage), daughter of Payn FitzJohn and Sibyl de Lacy, was ratified by King Stephen in 1137. The marriage was childless as were Cecily's subsequent marriages.
Walter de Hereford (died 1159/60), whether he married is unknown; however, Walter departed for Palestine on Michaelmas 1159, and died shortly afterwards without leaving legitimate issue.
Henry Fitzmiles (died c.1162), married a woman named Isabella, surname unknown; Henry died without legitimate issue.
Mahel de Hereford (died 1164), no record of marriage; died without legitimate issue.
William de Hereford (died 1166), no record of marriage; died without legitimate issue.
Bertha of Hereford (c.1130-), married William de Braose, 3rd Lord of Bramber, by whom she had issue.
Lucy of Gloucester, Lady of Blaen Llyfni and Bwlch y Dinas (died 1219/20), married Herbert FitzHerbert of Winchester, by whom she had issue.
After her husband's death, Sibyl entered a religious life at Llanthony Secunda Priory, Gloucester, which she had previously endowed. Sibyl was buried in the same priory, the dates of death and burial unrecorded.

E-mail dated January 30, 2005, from Martha Little to James Garrett:

James,

I have records from a Bible that belonged to Allen Hill, the husband of Sarah Garrett b. 22 Feb 1771. In the Bible it says Jane Garrett d. June 1, 1818 and underneath that it has John Garrett, d. (illegible) 13. It doesn't have dates of birth as the other ones do, just dates of death, which leads you to believe it is probably the parents of Sarah Garrett. It also has a record, "Thomas B. Garrett was born November 20, 1796." The woman doing the transcribing of the Bible has a notation "this must have been Sarah Hill's brother."

The Bible is not in my possession but was transcribed by a Mrs. Lena Murdock in a letter to my grandfather that he received back in 1943 when Mrs. Murdock was corresponding with him on genealogy. The Bible was bought by Allen Hill in 1805 and was leather bound and laced with rawhide according to the letter.

Any light you can shed on the Garrett family would be greatly appreciated.

Eleanor of Lancaster

Birth: Sep. 11, 1318
Monmouthshire, Wales
Death: Jan. 11, 1372
Arundel
West Sussex, England

This memorial is dedicated to my ancestor Eleanor of Lancaster, Countess of Arundel. She was the fifth daughter of Henry Plantagenet, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and Maud Chaworth.
On November 6, 1330, she married John de Beaumont, 2nd Lord Beaumont, son of Henry Beaumont, 4th Earl of Buchan and his wife Alice Comyn. They had two children:
Henry Beaumont, 3rd Lord Beaumont, (4 April 1340 – 17 June 1369), married as her first husband, Margaret de Vere (died 15 June 1398), by whom he had issue.
Matilda Beaumont (died July 1367), married Hugh de Courtenay.
Eleanor was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Philippa, and was in service to her in Ghent when her son Henry was born. John de Beaumont died in a tournament on April 14, 1342
On February 5, 1344 at Ditton Church, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, she married Richard FitzAlan, 10th Earl of Arundel.
The children of Eleanor's second marriage were:
Richard (1346 - 1397), who succeeded as Earl of Arundel
John Fitzalan (bef 1349 - 1379)
Thomas Arundel, Archbishop of Canterbury (c. 1345 - February 19, 1413)
Joan Fitzalan (1347/1348 - April 7, 1419), married Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford
Alice Fitzalan (1350 - March 17, 1416), married Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent (Thomas Holand)
Mary Fitzalan (died August 29, 1396), married John Le Strange, 4th Lord Strange of Blackmere, by whom she had issue
Eleanor Fitzalan (1356 - before 1366)
Eleanor died at Arundel and was buried at Lewes Priory in Lewes, Sussex, England. Her husband was buried beside her; in his will Richard requests to be buried "near to the tomb of Eleanor de Lancaster, my wife; and I desire that my tomb be no higher than hers, that no men at arms, horses, hearse, or other pomp, be used at my funeral, but only five torches...as was about the corpse of my wife, be allowed.

There is conflicting information on place of burial. Some information has the couple buried at Lewes Priory while their tombs appear to be located at Chichester Cathedral.
Perhaps they were first interred in Lewes Priory and later their tomb was relocated after the dissolution of churches.

Please visit Eleanor's cenotaph at Lewes Priory

Henry de Plantagenet

Birth: 1281, England
Death: Sep. 22, 1345, England

Henry of Lancaster, third Earl of Lancaster, Earl of Leicester and Lord of Beaufort.

Lord of Monmouth and Threecastles. In right of his wife, of East Garston and North Standen in Hungerford, Berkshire, of Lillingstone Dansey, Buckinghamshire, of Etloe Duchy in Awre and Kempsford, Goucesterhire, of King's Somborne, Hampshire, of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, of Ogmore Glamorgan.

Second son of Edmund "Crouchback' Plantagenet and Blanche d'Artois, Queen of Navarre. Grandson of King Henry III and Eleanor of Provence, Robert I, Count of Artois and Mathilde Brabant.

Husband of Matilda de Chaworth, daughter of Sir Patrick de Chaworth and Isabel de Beauchamp, daughter of William, Earl of Warwick. They were married after 30 Dec 1291, the grant of her marriage and before 02 March 1297. Mathilda was a wealthy heiress whose marriage granted massive properties to Henry. They produced one son and six daughters:
* Henry, Earl of Derby, Duke of Lancaster
* Blanche, wife of Baron Thomas Wake
* Maud, wife of William de Burgh, Earl of Ulster
* Joan, wife of Baron John de Mowbray
* Isabel, Abbess of Amesbury
* Eleanor, wife of John de Beaumont & Richard FitzAlan Arundel
* Mary, wife of Baron Henry de Percy
Maud died before 03 Dec 1322, buried at Mottisfort Priory.

Secondly, the husband of Alice de Joinville, daughter of Jean de Joinville, Seneschal de Champagne and Alice de Risnal, married after 1322.

Henry received Monmouth and lands in 1297 after his father's death in 1296. He was at the Battle of Falkirk 1298, summoned to Parliament 06 Feb 1299 as Henrico de Lancastre nepoti Regis (kinsman of the King) whereas he became Lord Lancaster. Henry was at the siege of Caerlaverock in 1300, and signed the Baron's letter to Pope Boniface in 1301 as D'n's de Munemue. He helped John le Harper escape from prison, but was pardoned for his part in 1307. Henry and Maud attended the coronation of King Edward II in 1308, was one of the men who forced the king to agree to the Lord Ordainers, and joined the marcher lords against Llywelyn Bren in 1315. His brother, John, died in France, requiring Henry to journey there to obtain his heritage in 1318.

Henry joined the Marchers against the Despensers in 1320, petitioned the king for, and received, the earldoms of Lancaster and Leicester when his brother, Thomas, was executed for his rebellions against the king by the Despensers in 1322.

Henry joined Queen Isabella and Roger de Mortimer against Edward II, sent to capture Edward at Neath in South Wales, taking the king to Glamorgan and next to Kenilworth Castle, where he remained in Henry's custody until 04 April 1327.

Henry was at the coronation of King Edward III 1327, but refused to attend Parliament in 1328, quarreling with the Queen who sent her forces to ravage Henry's Leicester lands, Henry's armed were defeated by Mortimer, and Henry received his lands back again. After Mortimer's demise, Henry and Edward became close again, the King granted Henry 500 marks annually for the maintenance of his estate. Henry was with Edward at the planning of the Scottish invasion in 1335, appointed to the Council of Edward's son, Prince Lionel, Keeper of England, during the King's travels in 1345. Apparently, Henry went blind about 1330.

Henry was buried on the north side of the high altar at Newark Abbey.

William was a close friend of King Edward I, and an important military leader in Edward's invasion into Wales in 1277, raised the siege of Conwy Castle in 1294, where the King had been penned in, defeated the Welsh at Maes Moydog in March 1295 against the Prince of Wales, Madog ap Llywelyn. In a night attack on the Welsh infantry, he used cavalry to drive them into compact formations, which were then shot up by his archers, and charged.

William defeated the Scots at Dunbar 27 April 1296 and was with the English at the defeat of Sterling in 1297. He was described as a "vigorous and innovative military commander".

By his wife, he inherited the manors of Cherhill, Wiltshire, Potterspury, Northamptonshire, Quarrendon, Buckinghamshire and a cantread (district) of townships in the Isles of Thomond in Ireland. William received a licence to crenellate Hanslope 10 June 1292.

William died at Elmley on the 5th or 9th of June, 1298, Maud died in April 1301 and they both were buried at Friars Minor (Greyfriars) at Worcester.

The Mark Laffoon Family, Part 1
LaVelda R. Faull (View posts)
Posted: 16 Feb 1999 12:00PM GMT
Classification: Biography
Surnames: Laffoon, Hardin, Sisk, Bourland, Allen, Wallace, Fox, Wright, Hall, Gillespie, Garason, Dowell, McClure, Davis, Timmons, Stokes, Orton, Malin

Mark Laffoon is a many times great-uncle of mine, as I am descended through Mark's sister, Cynthia (Laffoon) Fox. I was curious about Mark Laffoon and went to Hopkins County, Kentucky and Graves County, Kentucky to find out more about him. I hope this information is of use to others. In this account, mention is made of the possibility that Mark's wife, Sarah, was a Sisk or a Bourland. I tend to lean towards the Sisk family. See what you think.

THE MARK LAFFOON FAMILY by LaVelda R. Faull

Mark Laffoon was born ca 1775-80 either in Lunenburg Co., Virginia or Surry County, North Carolina to William and Sarah (Hardin??) Laffoon. Sarah was William's first wife and many believe she was a Hardin, although no definite proof has been found. No proof of Mark's middle name has been found either, although some researchers have written it as "Mark Hardin Laffoon". This may have begun because of the fact that in later generations there was a Mark Hardin Laffoon who was a Confederate Pensioner from Hopkins County, Kentucky. Mark's grandparents were Matthew and Mary Laffoon Sr. of Lunenburg and Brunswick Counties, Virginia. Proof of William Laffoon's father was located in court records.

It is this researcher's belief that Mark Laffoon married Sarah Sisk or Bourland, most probably in Pendleton District, South Carolina where his father had moved from Surry Co., NC. There is good evidence that she was one or the other, but which has not been conclusively proven. It is believed that Mark and Sarah Laffoon and Mark's brother, Rutherford Laffoon, moved to Hopkins County, KY from South Carolina in approximately 1802 with the Sisk, Fox, and Bourland families. Mark's father, William Laffoon, did not move to Hopkins County until approximately 1815. Mark obtained 400 acres of land through a certificate from Henderson Co., KY (now Hopkins county) (Land Warrant Book 1 p 85, Feb Court 1806 in Henderson County). This land was on Craborchard Fork of Drakes Creek (see Deed board for this warrant and survey).

Mark Laffoon died young in 1807 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. It is possible that he was killed by Robert Orr or at least he may have had something to do with his death as Sarah Sisk had to testify at his trial as did Barnabas Sisk, who became the guardian of Mark's children. This record is as follows:

Hopkins Co., Order Book 1-A, 23 Nov 1807

The Court proceeded to lay the County levy as

followeth:

To George Goodwin for guarding Robert Orr per order

Hopkins Co. Court....5.25

To Barnabas Sisk, witness against same 1 day..0.34

To Sarah Laffoon, witness against same 1 day..0.34

Mark's will was dated 13 May 1806 and was recorded in July of 1807 in Hopkins County Circuit Court (Will Book 1 page 24 - Inventory and Appraisal of estate dated Nov Court 1809, p. 25). The will reads "First, I recommend my soul to God,....Secondly, I give and bequeath to my wife Sally Laffoon all of my household goods, my lands and perishable property during the term of her widowhood, unless the children should come of age or marry in the time of her widowhood, then the property to be equally divided, and she to have thirds, or if she should marry then the property to be divided and she the third, and I do hereby appoint, constitute and ordain my trusty friends John and Ebenezer Bourland my executors, and I do hereby disown all wills or bequeaths whatsoever....Signed Mark (X) Laffoon. Teste: Noah Fox, Rutherford Laffoon. Noah Fox was his brother-in-law. Mark's inventory consisted of one bay mare and colt, five head of cattle, nineteen head of hogs, some farming equipment, household furniture, and several pewter dishes.

Gordon's "History of Hopkins County, Kentucky" abstracts several court records regarding Mark Laffoon's property,

p. 106 "Ebenezer Bourland and James Allen came into court and made oath that Mark Laffoon in his lifetime held a title bond on Benjamin Wallace for 150 acres on Flat Creek on which he had resided. Said land had descended to his children, the youngest of whom would be five months old on the 25th day of June 1807".

The Hopkins County, Ky 1807 Tax List shows that Mark and Sarah Laffoon had 450 acres when he died:

"Sarah Laffoon, 200 acres, Green River, Surveyed

in her name, 1 black, 5 horses

"Sarah Laffoon, 250 acres, Pond River, entered in

name of William Wallace".
Also the following was recorded on the 1807 Tax List

"David Wright, 350 acres, Pond River, Entered in

the name of Mark Laffoon" (It is still unclear

how David Wright obtained this property)

In 1815, Mark Laffoon's land was surveyed for his heirs (Surveyors Book 1 p 90) This land consisted of 400 acres in Hopkins County on Craborchard Fork of Drake's Creek adjoining Caleb Hall. It was surveyed by John Gordon, S.H.C., and chaincarriers were Barnabas Sisk and Asa Sisk.

After Mark's death, Barnabas Sisk became the guardian of his children as will be shown later. Barnabas Sisk was born ca 1769 and appears to have been the son of Timothy Sisk Sr. of Culpepper County, Virginia. He was close to the family of Thomas Sisk who may have been his brother. Thomas Sisk lived in Shenandoah (Dunmore) County, Virginia for a time near the Fox and Loving families. These families moved to Wilkes Co., NC and lived near the Surry Co. line. Barnabas Sisk lived on a plantation there owned by John Bourland as proven by deed (Wilkes Co., NC Deed Book I p 293-4, 21 oct 1793). The Fox, Sisk, and Bourland families lived in close proximity as indicated by the following deed:

Wilkes Co., NC

James and Elizabeth Fox to Richard Dowell, 80 lbs,

440 acres, Three Forks of Swan Creek, beginning at

the foot of the mountain adjoining Henry Burrows,

Timothy Sisk Jr, Timothy Sisk Sr. Wit: Ebenezer

Bourland, Barnbas Sisk, Timothy Sisk.

The question remains as to whether Barnabas Sisk was related to John Bourland. The connection between Barnabas Sisk and Sarah Laffoon may have been through the Bourland family, or Sarah may have been Barnabas' sister. The answer has not yet been found.

Swan Creek lay on the border of Wilkes Co., NC and Surry Co., NC where the Laffoon family lived before moving to Pendleton District, South Carolina with the Fox, Sisk, and Bourland families.

Approximately two years after Mark Laffoon's death, Sarah married a second time to Stephen Timmons on 12 Sept 1809 on Hopkins County, Kentucky. The 1810 census for Stephen Timmons shows that there were in his household 2 males age 10-16, 2 males 26-45, 1 female under 10, 4 females 10-16, 2 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45 (Sarah) and one female plus 45. His will was dated 18 June 1813(Will Book 1 p 108-9 and was probated August 1813. His will mentions his wife Sarah, Samuel (Sic - should be Sinnett) Laffoon, Sintha Laffoon, and Mark Laffoon. It states "the balance to be divided between my first wife's children...also I give to my two children Telitha and Dosha Timmons equal to my first wife's children.." Telitha and Dosha were his children by Sarah. The person who abstracted this will wrote Sinnett's name as Samuel and also indicated that the Laffoons were "grandchildren" when in actuality they were "stepchildren".
Hopkins County, Kentucky Court Records for 4 Dec 1819
Stephen Timmons, Dec'd. Settlement of Accounts of Administrator: George Timmons and Administratrix Sarah Timmons. Paid: Thomas G. Davis, E. M. Brank, and Barnabas Sisk.

It is interesting that in the above will Sarah was still listed as "Sarah Timmons" because on 12 January 1818 she married for the third time to Benjamin Stokes of Hopkins County, KY. They were married by A. Ashby, J.P. Benjamin Stokes (and Sarah) are found on the 1820 Hopkins Co., ky census. However, by 1830 they had moved to Graves Co., KY and were listed on that census.

In Hopkins Co., KY, Benjamin Stokes owned land on Deer Creek, part of which was entered in the name of "Catherine Stokes" who appears to have been his mother (her will was probated in Feb of 1819).

Mark Laffoon died in 1807 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.

Elizabeth Martiau Reade

Birth: 12 Dec 1625 York County, Virginia, USA
Death: 10 Feb 1696 (aged 70) Yorktown, York County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Grace Episcopal Churchyard, Yorktown, York County, Virginia, USA
Memorial #: 11591903

Bio:
Daughter of Capt. Nicholas and Elizabeth Martiau (1st wife). Married Col George Reade (1st spouse) in 1641 at Yorktown, York Co.,VA. She is decended from the Royal House of England starting with Henry the III thru Edward I, King of England.
Adventurers of Purse and Person 1607 - 1624/5 and Their Families" published by the Order of First Families of Virginia, indicates in a footnote (pp. 419-420) the discrepancy between the dates inscribed on his Grace Church tablets and the filing of the wills for George Read and his wife Elizabeth as follows: "His and his wife's gravestones were discovered during street excavations in Yorktown in 1931. The inscriptions on both were recut with errors. George Reade's stone now states he died Oct. 1674, "he being in the 66th yr of his age." Since the date should be 1671 (per his will), either the age shown, or his year of birth, is in error as well....The gravestone of Elizabeth (Martiau) Read now states she was born in 1625 and died in 1696, "being in ye 71st yeare of her age." Since the year of death should be 1686 (per her will), again the age or year of birth is in error. Since Nicholas Martiau claimed...his daughter Elizabeth as headrights...it would appear Elizabeth was born prior to his arrival in Virginia in 1620...and that Elizabeth's birth occurred in 1615 rather than 1625."In 1645 Nicholas Martian married 3rd wife Isabella Beach, as shown by the records of York. His will was dated March 1, 1657 or '67, and was proved April 4, 1657. He named his oldest daughter Elizabeth, who had crossed the ocean with him and became the wife of George Reade, Mary, his second daughter, wife of John Scarbrook, of York Co.; Sarah, his third daughter, wife of Capt. William Fuller, the Puritan Governor of Maryland. Elizbeth (Martiau) Reade's will was written Feb. 10, 1685 and proven Jan. 24 1686/87 in York Co., VA.

Hamelin De Warenne Famous memorial

Birth: 1135 France
Death: 7 May 1202 (aged 66-67) Lewes, Lewes District, East Sussex, England
Burial: Lewes Priory, Lewes, Lewes District, East Sussex, England
Memorial #: 41277080

Bio:
English Aristocracy. Born an illegitimate son of Geoffrey Plantagenet of Anjou he was known as Hamelin the Bastard or Hamelin d'Anjou, and was a half-brother of King Henry II of England. He was granted the title of Vicomte de Touraine. In 1164, he was present on the Council of Northampton which tried Thomas Becket and found him guilty of perjury and heresy. That same year, the king arranged his half brother's marriage to one of the wealthiest heiresses in England, Isabella de Warenne, who was in her own right, Countess of Surrey. After the wedding, he adopted his wife's name, and became the 5th Earl of Surrey in right of his wife. The couple had at least five children, they and all their descendants were called de Warenne. In 1173, while Henry II dealt with rebellious sons, his half-brother remained his staunch ally. In 1176 he escorted Princess Joan, his niece, to Sicily for her marriage to King William II. After Henry's death, he participated in the coronation of his nephew Richard I and then in John's coronation. In 1200 he was granted lands at Conisborough, Yorkshire where his seat, Conisbrough Castle, stands. He died at about age 72 and was interred at the Chapter House at Lewes Priory, in Sussex.

Memorial #: 7656588
Bio:
Aged 63 Yeares 2 Mth 26Ds. Came to Virginia about 1628, and finally settled in Gloucester Co., on an estate called "Warner Hall." He was Burgess from York in 1652, and from Gloucester in 1658. He was a member of the King's Council, 1659-74. He is the 4th great-grandfather to Gen Robert E Lee.

From "Warner Hall Story of a Great Plantation" by David Brown & Thane Harpole, pub. DATA Investigations Inc., 2004

p. 64
Inscriptions on the Warner Hall Tombstones
These fourteen inscriptions are taken from Lyon G. Tylers 1894 article in the "William and Mary Quarterly". There is some confusion about the tombs, since Mildred Reade Warner has no legible inscription, and the stone of James J. McClanahan was moved to Abingdon Parish Church.
