Son of Theobald Walter and Maud le Vavasour, born by 1201 in Ireland where his mother lived after her marriage, returning to England after Theobald's death.
Husband of Joan du Marais, daughter of Geoffrey du Marais, Justiciar of Ireland. Father of Theobald Butler, 3rd Chief Butler of Ireland.
Secondly, husband of Rohese de Verdon at the specific request of Henry III of England. They were married shortly after the agreement made 04 September 1225. Their children were John de Verdun, Lord of Meath and Maud de Verdun who married John FitzAlan.
Theobald had livery of his lands 18 July 1222, and was summoned with horses and arms to accompany the King into Brittany October 1229.
His mother would remarry to Fulk FitzWarin and became outlaws, thought to have the basis for the story of Robin Hood and Marion.
