He was the son of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl and Lady Eleanor Sinclair. He died in 1521. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Atholl on 15 Sep 1512. He fought in the Battle of Flodden on 9 Sep 1513 at Flodden Field, Northumberland, England, where he is usually said to have been slain. On 20 Jun 1489 in Fife, Scotland, Sir John / James IV "2nd Earl of Atholl" Stewart married Lady Janet, Countess Atholl, Campbell (c. 1492-1545; F.A.G. #169170965). Together they had three (3) children: 1: Lady Janet Stewart (1505-1566) 2: Lady Elizabeth Stewart (1513-1567; F.A.G. #169151947) 3: John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl (1507-c. 1542).
